Samsung allegedly in talks with Sharp to invest $110 million

Word has it Samsung and Sharp are in talks over a possible investment on Samsung’s part into Sharp Corp. to the tune of $110 million. By doing this, both companies will benefits, with Sharp gaining a significant financial boost and Samsung gaining a 3-percent stake in the company. This information was provided by three sources said to be familiar with the situation.

According to the sources, the talks are in late stages, with Samsung likely to make the investment. Aside from the obvious gains, this partnership would be noteworthy on several levels, bringing together two companies from rivaling countries, both with their own consumer electronics powerhouses. Samsung is a Korean company, while Sharp is a Japanese company.

This would come at a time when Sharp has both suffered financially and has seen a drop in production of displays for the iPad as demand is refocused to the iPad mini, a device Sharp does not supply components for. Sharp’s spokesperson offered a decidedly ambiguous response to the rumors, reports Reuters: “This news is not something that has been announced by the company.”

Word has it the deal will officially be announced sometime today. This follows an investment into Sharp by Qualcomm late last year to the tune of $120 million. For its part, the two companies would join forces to develop energy-efficient IGZO-technology displays. Stay tuned, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated when we know more.

Samsung Galaxy S IV shows up on Expansys

Just last night, EVLeaks dropped some renders of the Galaxy S IV on Twitter, giving us a glimpse at what the new smartphone may look like when its eventually unveiled on March 14. However, it looks like those renders actually came from the device’s landing page on Expansys, an online electronics retailer. Furthermore, the tweet from EVLeaks has since been deleted. UPDATE: Expansys has since made clear that these renders come from their web designer and were not meant to be seen as actual images of the device – so cool your jets!

Screen Shot 2013-03-05 at 9.07.13 AM

The landing page goes over some of the more important features of the Galaxy S IV, including that eye-tracking technology that we also heard about yesterday, called “Eye Scroll” and “Eye Pause.” While we know what Eye Scroll will do, Eye Pause was more of a mystery. However, according to the listing, Eye Pause “ensures you never have to pause your videos again if you have to glance away from your phone.” The Galaxy S IV will automatically pause videos if you look away from the screen.

Other than that, specifications look to be right on the money from what we’ve been hearing in the past. The new smartphone will come with a 5-inch 1080p AMOLED display protected with Gorilla Glass 3, as well as a quad-core Exynos 5 processor clocked at 1.7GHz, although the landing page mentions an 8-core chip with two quad-core CPUs. However, it’s rumored that the US version of the device will get a Snapdragon 600 clocked at 1.5GHz, but we’ll ultimately have to wait and see what Samsung decides to do.

The smartphone is also listed to have 2GB of RAM, and will come in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB flavors, with the option of inserting a microSD card that stores up to 64GB, making the total amount of storage a possible 128GB. There will also be a 13MP rear camera capable of shooting 1080p video at 60fps, along with a 2MP front-facer capable of recording 720p video at 30fps. The device will also come packing with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with a 2,500mAh battery to power the show. However, it’s important to take these specs with a grain of salt, as Expansys notes that these details could change.

iWatch could be worth $6 billion for Apple claims analyst

Every week it seems like we have another new rumor from “sources familiar with Apple’s plans” claiming that the company is getting ready to launch a watch of one sort or another. At the same time, we continue to hear rumors that Apple is looking to get into the TV market with its own Apple HDTV. One analyst believes that Apple will probably get into the watch market before the TV market.

iwatch_concept-580x405

The analyst is Oliver Chen from Citigroup and after looking at the numbers, he believes the iWatch could be a $6 billion business for Apple. The analyst also noted that there is “plenty of opportunity for upside” assuming Apple is able to create something totally new as it did with the iPod. Chen bases his numbers off the fact that the global watch market is worth $60 billion a year.

Apple will have to capture 10% of that global watch market to hit that $6 billion number Chen thinks is doable. I would think Apple certainly has the ability to do that with an iWatch. The product would likely capture a number of people that wouldn’t have been in the watch market otherwise helping to grow the market overall.

Chen also notes that watch margins are humongous along the lines of 60% making the potential margins on the iWatch very appealing. Using these figures Chen came up with the potential gross profit of $3.6 billion for Apple if it enters the watch market with an appealing product. At the same time, if Apple entered the TV market and captured 10% it would expect a gross profit of about $1.79 billion making the watch market much more appealing.

EVLeaks drops alleged Samsung Galaxy S IV specs ahead of launch

The clock is ticking down to when Samsung‘s Galaxy S IV will make its official public debut, but until then we’ve seen a variety of leaks and rumors about the device, with a new one surfacing today. The ever-faithful @evleaks on Twitter has posted two render images purported to be the Galaxy S IV, with one of them listing its specs, which you can check out after the jump.

The two images show off a rather spartan mock-up of the Galaxy S IV’s design, with the first image also including an array of specs that aren’t anything we haven’t seen before. According to the leak, the display will be a full HD Super AMOLED touchscreen, which will have a 4.99-inch display, while storage will be available in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB varieties.

The camera is said to be a 13-megapixel unit offering a max resolution of 4,128 x 3,096 pixels, as well as an LED flash and auto focus. There’s 2GB of RAM listed, and it is said to run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. According to a benchmark that surfaced last month, the Galaxy S IV could have a Qualcomm Adreno 320 GPU, while word has it the handset will run a Exynos 5250 processor.

Earlier today, Samsung sent out “Be Ready 4 The Next Galaxy” invitations to its upcoming event in New York City on March 14. Stay tuned to Slashgear – we’ll keep you updated on the handset’s latest info up until the big event, after which point we’ll get our hands on the device to give you a complete rundown of what it has to offer.

Samsung Galaxy S IV design, specs potentially leaked on Twitter (update: they’re from Expansys)

Samsung Galaxy S IV design, specs potentially leaked on Twitter

Even as the secret of Samsung’s Galaxy S IV has been handed off to some teenager, the @evleaks Twitter account (which has been reliable in the past) just posted a supposed pic of and specs for the phone. Along with what’s clearly a rendering and potentially just a placeholder image of the phone, the specs list a Super AMOLED Full HD screen of unknown size, 16GB/32GB/64GB storage options with 2GB of RAM, a 13MP camera and Android 4.2 OS. A second image shows the same mockup lined up with previous Galaxy phones apparently confirming its status as the largest one yet, although that’s not surprising given recent trends. Of course, given what we know about the lengths Samsung went to protect the design of the Galaxy S III (multiple designs, hand-delivered prototypes), you’ll forgive us for reserving judgement until the real thing is shown off on March 14th.

Update: We’ve been informed that both renders are from e-tailer Expansys, which adds yet another dusting of salt to the reliability of these specs. The listing also throws in that rumored eye-based scrolling feature. Jeremy is in big trouble.

Update 2: Now evleaks has deleted the original tweets — anyone else ready for 9 more days like this?

Samsung Galaxy S IV to come with eye-tracking functionality

The Galaxy S IV announcement — or so we think that’s what we’ll see — is just 10 days away, and the rumors are simply not stopping, nor should we expect them to. The latest one to feast your eyes on is the supposed implementation of eye-tracking technology in the Galaxy S IV, which will allow users to scroll web pages or apps with their own eyeballs.

samsung_galaxy_s_III_review_sg_7-580x43111111

According to the New York Times, the new phone will watch where your eyes are looking and will scroll down the page for you when your eyes reach the bottom. It’s said that Samsung has trademarked the term for this technology and are calling it either “Eye Scroll” or “Eye Pause.” Eye Scroll sounds a lot better, but we’ll see what Samsung does come March 14.

The anonymous source, who is a Samsung employee and was not authorized to speak to media (tisk tisk), didn’t say what technology was being used to track eye movement, and we probably won’t know exactly until the Samsung press conference. However, the source said that software features of the Galaxy S IV will outweigh the importance of the hardware overall.

However, Samsung’s chief product officer, Kevin Packingham, noted that he disagreed that the software would take attention away from the hardware, saying that the rumored device is “an amazing phone.” Of course, we’ll ultimately find out come March 14, but unless the Galaxy S IV comes with better hardware specs than the HTC One or other recent devices, hardware may not really be a huge deal.

Nokia EOS to sport aluminum body, waterproof nano coating

We’ve heard ramblings of Nokia’s upcoming rumored flagship before, known as the “EOS” or “Catwalk.” This time around, we’re hearing some really interesting tidbits of about the phone, most particularly that it’ll come with an aluminum outer shell, and will be waterproof thanks to a special nano coating from P2i, which is a partnership that the company’s allegedly worked out at Mobile World Congress last week.

nokia_pureview_0

According to Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin, only a few attendees at Mobile World Congress last week were actually able to see the new smartphone, and he was one of them. Of course, the EOS will also sport Nokia’s popular PureView camera technology, specifically the Nokia 808 PureView 41-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, and it’s said that the new phone will be the successor of the Lumia 920, which is Nokia’s current flagship model.

As for the waterproof technology, P2i is said to be providing the services, and will allow the new phone to be completely waterproof even without having to put covers over the ports. We’re guessing the nano coating that’s used is the same process that Liquipel uses to waterproof various devices. The company made an appearance at CES back in January.

It’s said that the EOS will debut sometime this year, but specifics are hard to come by at this point still. However, we could expect an announcement sometime during the fall, when Nokia hold their annual event where they’ve unveiled new products in the past, including new Windows Phone 8 devices just last year.

Apple iWatch tipped for 2013 launch

We’ve been hearing about a lot of buzz about a possible new smartwatch coming straight out of Cupertino. While we’ve certainly heard a lot about what the alleged watch will feature, we’ve never heard many rumors about when we’d actually be able to buy the thing. It turns out, however, that sources are saying the iWatch will be available to consumers this year.

iwatch_concept-580x405

According to Bloomberg, one of the team members currently working on the iWatch at Apple says that the watch will be introduced later this year, most likely in the early fall when Apple usually announces new products. This goes along with a very early rumor that we heard back in December. Bloomberg says that a smartwatch has been a long-time project that Apple’s Jony Ive has been wanting to work on, and it’s said that Ive handed out Nike sports watches a few years ago for his team to study.

It’s said that around 100 engineers are working on the iWatch project, so there’s certainly no shortage of manpower behind the task, so it would make sense if we would see the iWatch come to fruition as early as later this year. The iWatch could come with the same features as the recently-launched Pebble watch, but may come with even more capabilities.

As for battery life, The Verge reports that Apple is aiming for four to five days on a single charge, according to their sources. However, current prototypes that are being tested are only lasting around a couple of days, so that’s definitely an issue that the Cupertino-based company is having problems with, so we’re not sure if the watch will actually last a full work week, but let’s hope so.

News Corp. and Disney allegedly in talks over the future of Hulu

According to sources, News Corp. and Disney are in talks about one of the companies possibly buying out the other to take control of Hulu, with NBC remaining the minority in the matter. Both Disney and News Corp. own about a third of Hulu each, and both are said to differ on how they feel the company should be monetized. Says the sources, these talks are in the beginning stages.

hulu-logo

Per the two individuals who provided the information and are said to have knowledge about what is going on, News Corp. is of the opinion that Hulu should be primarily monetized via subscriptions, which is a current option with Hulu Plus ($8 per month). Disney, on the other hand, thinks Hulu should instead be dependent on an ad-based business model.

As part of the talks, both Disney and News Corp. will look into making changes to Hulu’s business model, or into possibly selling the service. Although they are in talks, says the sources, no deal is guaranteed and nothing may come of the alleged talks. Neither corporation has had anything official to say on the matter.

Hulu has grown since its humble beginnings, having been formed by Fox and NBC, which is now the minority holder. The service has grown, with the company reporting late last year that revenue had climed to $695 million, and that the number of subscribers was up substantially to 3 million. These rumors follow the upcoming leave of Hulu’s CEO Jason Kilar, who is set to step down at the end of the month.

Samsung Galaxy S IV to come in black and white, up to 64GB of storage

Samsung’s newest smartphone is about to be announced later this month, most likely the Galaxy S IV, and rumors have obviously been flying off the walls as of late. We already saw some of what Samsung was cooking up at Mobile World Congress earlier this week, but it looks like the company will be pulling the “one last thing” trick come March 14.

gs4-tweet-500x500

The latest in a line of Galaxy S IV rumors is the list of possible models that Samsung will have available of the new device. Rumors suggest that there will be six variants of the Galaxy S IV, and it will come in both black and white color options. As for size capacities, you’ll be able to choose either 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB.

Of course, it’s expected that Samsung will include a microSD card slot with the Galaxy S IV, so opting for the 64GB variant may not be necessary, but if you’re looking for the most storage possible, a 64GB phone combined with a 32GB microSD card means a lot of movies, music, and photos that you can store on that bad boy.

As for specs of the Galaxy S IV, we’re looking at a 5-inch full 1080p display and possibly a 13MP rear camera. On the inside, we might see Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon 600 processor clocked at 1.7GHz paired up with 2GB of RAM (with an Exynos 5 chip in the international version). Overall, it should be a powerhouse of a phone that will take on HTC’s latest HTC One and DROID DNA.
