iPad 5 to be smaller than usual, thinner bezel on the way

Earlier today, we pointed out some photos of what look to be the shell of the iPad 5 right up next to the iPad mini that we all know about. Nothing seemed too off at that point, until people started to notice that the size difference between the two tablets shown in the photos wasn’t that great. It appears that the iPad 5 will come with the same 9.7-inch display, but Apple may slap it into a smaller package.

In the size comparison photo below, the iPad 5 will be slightly shorter and significantly narrower than the 4th-gen iPad, but as far as we know, it’ll have the same 9.7-inch display, hinting at the fact that the iPad 5 may come with a thinner bezel all the way around, similar to the bezel design of the iPad mini.

It’s not all that surprising, though, and it makes sense that Apple is looking to unify the look and design between the iPad and the iPad mini, by making the larger iPad a bit smaller and sleeker and giving it a black matte finish on the back. We have to say that we’re big fans of uniformity, so this comes as a happy surprise.

The iPad 5 is said to be thinner than past iterations, although we’re not sure if it’ll surpass the thinness of the iPad 2, which is Apple’s thinness iPad so far. Other than the design change, everything else should be relatively the same. Volume buttons, the screen lock/mute switch, and the power button all look to be in the same locations, and it’ll obviously come with Apple’s new Lightning connector, as well as a rear-facing camera along with a front shooter.

YouTube rumored to launch paid content this spring

It looks like YouTube is wanting to attract more content producers to its platform, as well as make a couple extra bucks on the side, because according to AdAge, the video-streaming site is planning to offer paid subscriptions for individual channels to its users starting sometime in the spring.

youtube

YouTube is said to have contacted a “small group” of content producers on YouTube, asking them to create paid channels that will cost anywhere between $1 and $5 a month, which isn’t too expensive at all, when you consider that this is just for one YouTube channel, the cost can add up, resulting in spending up to $20 per month for just four channels.

In addition to charging for content via channels, YouTube is also considering charging for content libraries and access to live events — their own version of pay-per-view in a way. Other than that, though, nobody’s sure what channels YouTube is making deals with, but AdAge says that they’ve been contacting highly-popular channels about the new system.

YouTube knows that its users probably won’t enjoy the fact that they’ll have to start paying for the content that they’ve been watching for free, but it’s said that YouTube is recommending the channels to take in consideration of how their audience reacts to the new system. Then again, since more and more people are cutting cable, paying for a few subscriptions on YouTube will still end up being cheaper in the long run.

8 Samsung Devices Rumored For MWC 2013 Unveiling

8 Samsung Devices Rumored For MWC 2013 UnveilingMWC 2013 will be taking place next month and as we have been for the past few years, you can count on us to bring you coverage of the event as it unfolds, but in the meantime if you’re looking forward to seeing what Samsung might be bringing to the table, word has it that there will be at least 8 Android smartphones that Samsung might be announcing at the event. The specifics of the devices remain unknown, although according to the folks at SamMobile, they have the names of the devices so at least we will know which smartphones to keep an eye out for.

These devices include the Samsung Galaxy Frame, Galaxy Pocket 2, Galaxy Young, Galaxy Star, Galaxy Core, Galaxy Fonblet 5.8, Galaxy Fonblet 6.3 and one more device with the codename HomeSync, although admittedly all these names do sound like codenames to begin with. If you were hoping for high-end devices, supposedly these 8 devices will be of the low to mid-range variety but then again not everyone can afford high-end smartphones so it will be interesting to see what Samsung has to offer. Either way be sure to check back with us during MWC for all the details!

LG Display Rumored To Reduce Dependence On Apple For Business

LG Display Blue LCD TV LG Display Rumored To Reduce Dependence On Apple For BusinessJust like how there are rumors of Apple looking to move away from Samsung to reduce their dependence of the South Korean company for some of their parts, there are now reports by a South Korean publication who claims that LG Display is looking to move away from Apple in what seems like an ironic twist. As we’re sure some of you guys have heard, Apple’s shares have dropped recently and apparently LG Display is a bit worried about that, and the report claims that the company is looking to reduce their dependence on Apple for business due to a “bleak future forecast”. This is rather interesting as apparently 70% of LG Display’s profits for 2012 came from Apple, so we figure it might take LG Display a while before they will be able to fill that void – assuming that this report is to be believed, of course. The South Korean publication goes on to claim that LG Display will instead be working with new clients who will require components such as FPR-type 3D TV panels and WRGB OLED panels for 2013. Since neither LG nor Apple has come forward to make an official statement regarding this matter, we will be taking this with a grain of salt for now and suggest you do the same.

Is This What the Next iPad Will Look Like?

9to5Mac has an image that shows a prototype design for the next iPad and guess what, it looks a lot like the iPad Mini. These pictures are only unconfirmed images, but if proven to be real, it looks like the big iPad might follow in the iPad Mini’s footstep of lovely chamfered edges. More »

Budget iPhone Could Be A Frankenstein Phone Borrowing From iPhone 5, iPod Touch [Rumor]

The rumors for Apple’s cheaper iPhone have been all over the place as some reports say it exists, while others say Apple wouldn’t offer a cheaper iPhone at all. Today’s news, once again, claims a cheaper iPhone does exist, and in fact goes into detail on what exactly the cheaper iPhone will look like.

The report published today comes from iLounge who claims they have information in regards to how the cheaper iPhone may look like whenever Apple decides to announce it to the world. The cheaper iPhone is said to be a combination of a number of mobile iOS devices as it’ll have the iPhone 5′s front, the bottom of the fifth-generation of iPod touch, and the overall form of the iPod classic.

This Frankenstein iPhone will adopt a number of features from the iOS devices its taking influence from as its back will have more of a curve than recent iPhones, similar to the iPod classic’s curve, and even though its front will resemble an iPhone 5, its screen will slightly jut out, similar to how it does with the iPod touch.

iphone components iPhone 5S And iPhone 6 Components Leaked [Rumor]Apple will need at least three iPhones to top the smartphone industry and to beat its fierce South Korea rival, according to a new report. French tech blog NoWhereElse claims to posses loud speaker modules of Apple’s hotly debated iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 smartphones. As you can see above, the images reportedly came from an Apple supplier that makes components for Apple. It did not name the said supplier but pointed out instead that Apple will release three phones – an iPhone 5S, an iPhone 6, and an iPhone with the codename “Math.” (more…)

128GB iPad rumored to start at $799, $929 for LTE model

Yesterday, we heard word that Apple may soon release a 128GB version of the fourth-generation iPad, thanks to a clever find by a developer who found the hint deeply embedded into the iOS 6 firmware. Rumored pricing for the more-capacious Apple tablet has now made its way into the streams: $799 for the WiFi-only model, and $929 for the WiFi+LTE variant.

ipad-ipadmini-3-31-SlashGear-ipad-mini--580x326

The rumored pricing details come from 9to5Mac, who say that they received the prices from “a high-profile US retailer.” Other than the increase in storage capacity, this rumored 128GB iPad model is said to be relatively the same as far as other internals go, as well as the overall design, so no performances improvements coming with this one.

ipad-128gb-pricing

From the SKU listing above, the P101 and P103 names are Apple’s internal codenames for the WiFi-only and LTE models of the fourth-generation iPads, respectively. In the past, you might remember how Apple named its different capacity sizes “GOOD,” “BETTER,” and “BEST,” based on either 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB, respectively. However, the chart above shows an additional “ULTIMATE” model, which could mean a 128GB version.

Of course, we’re keeping the salt nearby as always, but if the rumors turn out to be true, we wouldn’t be too surprised anyway. More and more users are using their iPads for their everyday computer needs, and 64GB just doesn’t cut it sometimes, which is why Apple might be thinking about a top-tier 128GB model for those with a lot of music, videos, photos, etc.

Lenovo discredits RIM acquisition rumors

Lenovo was a hot topic last week after it was reported that CFO Wong Wai Ming said that the company was looking into an acquisition of RIM, as well as possibly a couple of other companies. However, the company has released an official statement downplaying the significance of the quotes from Ming, saying that Ming “was speaking broadly about M&A strategy” and the interviewer specifically asked about RIM.

lenovo_ideaphone_k900_hands-on_sg_0-580x4072

So, it turns out that Lenovo may not actually be seeking a RIM acquisition, but Lenovo didn’t provide a straight “no” either, simply just saying that the company does “not comment on M&A rumors or speculation,” and that they’re “very focused on growing its business, both organically and through M&A.”

Furthermore, RIM has also issued a statement about the miscommunication, and they too, didn’t give a strict “no” concerning the acquisition rumors, saying that they “continue to examine all available options,” but the company currently doesn’t “have anything new to report on our Strategic Review at this time.”

Essentially, this doesn’t add any more to the rumors, but it also doesn’t take anything away. Sure, both companies were quick to downplay the quotes made by CFO Ming, but neither company flat out said “no” to the rumors. Both Lenovo and RIM say that they’re always evaluating different opportunities for growth and making decisions that best benefit the two companies.
