Apple Interested In A Smart Watch Of Their Own? [Rumor]

timthumb Apple Interested In A Smart Watch Of Their Own? [Rumor]With the previous design of the iPod nano, many accessory manufacturers took the opportunity to create watch straps that would accommodate the device, essentially turning the iPod nano into a watch-like device. Now we’ve seen several smart watches created in the past, such as the Pebble smart watch, but if the rumors are to be believed, it seems that Apple could be interested in such a device themselves. According to Tech.163, they claim that they have heard whispers in the supply chain that Intel has developed a smart watch that Apple could be interested in.

The rumored device is said to feature a 1.5” OLED display with indium tin oxide, or ITO coated glass. Supposedly Apple could be gearing up to release such a device as soon as next year. While it is not entirely possible that Apple is looking to introduce new devices in their portfolio, Apple rumors have typically been rather fanciful rather than believable, so we will be taking this with generous doses of salt and suggest you do the same, but for the sake of discussion, what do you guys think? Could you see Apple launch a smart watch of their own in the future?

Taiwan’s Unimicron could produce future Apple chipsets [Rumor]

Taiwans Unimicron could produce future Apple chipsets [Rumor]With the deteriorating relationship between Apple and Samsung, it is becoming increasingly common to hear about Apple looking to source the manufacturing of their AX chipsets from manufacturers that aren’t Samsung. So far we’ve heard rumors that Intel could be picking up the slack, and we’ve also heard that TSMC is a strong candidate, and here to add to the list is another Taiwanese chip maker, Unimicron. Word has it that the Taipei-based manufacturer has passed a smaller-scale test in the current quarter in which they were put to the test to see if they were capable of delivering the basic ARM foundation for Apple’s AX chipset. There are supposedly plans to build a new plant in which production will be ramped up upon completion.

It was only recently that there was speculation that future Apple chipsets could be built in the US, as word has it that a company is looking to build a 3.2 million square foot facility where about 1,000 people would be hired. Rumor has it that Apple was the company, but recently it has been suggested that it could be TSMC who in turn would be helping Apple make their chips.

Apple and Sharp in talks over IGZO displays

sharp igzo w Apple and Sharp in talks over IGZO displaysThere were rumors that Apple could be ditching Sharp due to the Japanese company’s inability to meet the demand in the production of display panels used for Apple’s iOS devices, but according to Digitimes that might not be the case as it seems that Apple is reportedly still in talks with Sharp over the possible incorporation of its IGZO display panels in future products. Assuming these talks are successful, Apple is rumored to be interested in making the switch to IGZO in iOS products for 2013, which we assume will include the iPad, iPad mini, and iPhone.

Prior to the launch of the third-gen iPad, it was rumored that Apple could be using IGZO displays for the tablet, but as we can see based on teardowns, Apple decided not to go with IGZO at the very last minute. Considering that these IGZO displays are said to be able to be built under thinner bezels and consume less power, we can certainly see the appeal. Plus with Sharp’s financial struggles, a large order from Apple could certainly help them get back on track, that and Qualcomm’s $120 million investment, of course.

Samsung Galaxy S III with LTE rumored for T-Mobile

Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S III smartphone has been available for some time now, but it’s still one of the best Android devices out there, and carriers are still promoting it as one of their elite devices to choose from. Case in point, it’s rumored that T-Mobile will be outing an LTE version of the Galaxy S III sometime next year.

samsung_galaxy_s_III_review_sg_7-580x43112

A Samsung GSM phone that goes by the model name SGH-T999L has just been certified by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, and it’s presumably a version of the Samsung Galaxy S III that’s tailored for sale with T-Mobile in the US, since the current T-Mobile version of the Galaxy S III goes by the model name SGH-T999.

The “L” that’s tacked onto the end of the rumored device is allegedly short for “LTE”, meaning there could be an LTE variant of the Galaxy S III making its way to T-Mobile sometime soon. While this doesn’t do the carrier any good now, T-Mobile is expected to launch its own LTE network at some point in 2013, so it makes sense that they’re readying LTE phones for when they launch their LTE network.

Then again, the T-Mobile Galaxy Note II has LTE on board, which will eventually be enabled when the carrier launches LTE, so this new Galaxy S III with LTE might release a little earlier than T-Mobile’s own LTE. However, take it with a grain of salt because it could end up that the SGH-T999L might be something completely different, but we’ll keep our ears to the ground.

RIM rumored to lower Blackberry 7 device prices with the launch of Blackberry 10

devices 602x274 RIM rumored to lower Blackberry 7 device prices with the launch of Blackberry 10With the launch of Blackberry 10 on the 30th of January in 2013 and the subsequent Blackberry 10 devices that will launch after it, will customers still turn towards RIM’s Blackberry 7 handsets? The good news is that if you are worried that Blackberry 10 phones are going to be expensive, but you love the Blackberry platform anyway, word on the street (via Digitimes) has it RIM will be lowering the prices of Blackberry 7 handsets to help expand their market share. Given that Blackberry has a pretty strong base in emerging markets like Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America, we guess RIM is hoping that by lowering the prices, they will be able to capture even more market share from said regions. Perhaps they might even start to capture some market share in the US and Europe where they aren’t doing as well compared to the competition like iOS and Android.

Possible full frame Sony mirrorless camera to be released 2013/2014 [Rumor]

sony nex 7 Possible full frame Sony mirrorless camera to be released 2013/2014 [Rumor]While mirrorless camera systems are great for the enthusiast photographer looking for a camera that is not only compact but is able to take high quality images, it does lack one feature that DSLR cameras have which is that they do not come in full frame. Granted not everyone has the need for full frame, but given the way cameras have been developed and the traction mirrorless systems have been gaining, a full frame system wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination, would it? According to Sony Alpha Rumors, they are claiming that based on the intel gathered by their sources, it seems that Sony could be unveiling a full frame NEX system come 2013.

If true, this rumored camera will not be making an appearance early 2013, but rather a release towards the end of 2013 or early 2014 would be more likely. Their source has also informed them that the camera’s body is expected to be bigger than the NEX-7, but not that different in terms of design. It will also be expected to support E-mount and A-mount lenses, and that at the moment Sony is testing the camera with either a 24MP or 30-32MP sensor. We’ll be taking this with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Would a full frame mirrorless camera be of interest to you?
