Unsubsidized iPhone Coming Your Way?

There are whispers going around that there could be an unsubsidized version of the iPhone lurking out there, especially when the same rumors also point towards Apple rolling out a more affordable iPhone model which will not be subsidized in any way – meaning, you can just purchase it unlocked, and pop in a microSIM card that is connected to a mobile carrier of your choice. At the moment, it is common practice in the US as well as throughout Europe for network providers to offer devices such as the iPhone and Galaxy S3 to customers at a subsidized price, and we normally look at figures such as $200.

The networks themselves will have to buy the smartphone from the manufacturer (Apple in the case of the iPhone), and keep their fingers crossed that the subscribers are able to spend more than the cost of the handset itself throughout a minimum-term contract. Hence, this particular rumor about Apple rolling out a cheaper and dumbed down iPhone a couple of years from now in order to take advantage of markets such as China and India. What do you think of this rumor?

Microsoft Works On New Set Top Box?

There are whispers going around at the moment that Microsoft is currently working on a device that will rival the Apple TV when it is released, but it does come with an advantage – to feature casual gaming. Different sources on the ground do report of claims that Microsoft’s strategy of spinning off a new set-top box range is to help supplement its future Xbox strategy. Apparently, it is part of an alleged dual SKU strategy for the next generation of Xbox hardware which is tipped for a 2013 announcement. Not only that, the rumors have it that this new hardware strategy will result in a release before the frenzied holiday shopping season begins, placing Microsoft in a rather strategic position of capturing the attention of living rooms.

The Verge did mention that this upcoming device, if true, will run the core components of Windows 8, with the possibility of RT thrown into the mix, where it is capable of supporting casual gaming titles instead of the full blown Xbox gaming experience. We await leaks on the hardware specifications – what do you think of Microsoft’s alleged effort? Will it be able to carve out a niche of its own?

iTunes 11 to be released in the next few days?

The next iteration of iTunes, iTunes 11, is expected to be a major revamp but unfortunately the launch of iTunes 11 has been delayed. No specific date was given for its release apart from a November time frame, although if the reports are to be believed, it looks like we can expect to see iTunes 11 go up for download in the next few days. According to reports, it seems that Apple has sent out requests to artists and music labels for high resolution images and galleries for its iTunes 11 release, which according to the message, will be “within the next few days”. We have no way to confirm whether these reports are accurate so we suggest you take it with a grain of salt for now, but since we are still in November and Apple did promise a release in November, it wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination if this was real. In anyway case we’ll keep an eye out for the next few days and see if the rumors pan out, so stay tuned for more updates!

Sony rumored to have three full frame camera prototypes in the works

We reported not too long ago that Sony was rumored to be working on a mysterious new camera and that the company was expected to debut new Alpha cameras at CES 2013. The folks at Sony Alpha Rumors are back with another tip and this time they claim that according to their sources, Sony has three new full frame camera prototypes in the works. Instead of each prototype being deviations of each other, their sources have informed them that each prototype is completely different and are not three versions of the same concept. We’re not sure if all three prototypes will make it to a possible announcement at CES 2013, but it seems that some lucky photographers have already begun testing it in the field already, with one of the cameras tentatively being named the A1x. In any case this is merely a rumor at this point with not much to go on, so do take it with a grain of salt but with CES 2013 only a couple of months away, we guess we won’t have long to wait to see if it pans out.

iTunes 11 to launch “within the next days”

It seems we may see the launch of iTunes 11 sometime within the next few days or so. According to an email being sent out to various musicians, German music distribution service Feiyr is asking artists to update their album artwork in order for it to be compatible with iTunes 11. The new version of iTunes was delayed last month, but it’s said that it will arrive at the end of November.

However, the email makes no mention of Apple and whether or not Feiyr was told directly by Apple that iTunes 11 would be out soon. The email asks musicians and labels to submit pictures and galleries of themselves or their artists to iTunes so that they can appear in the new Music Store layout.

While the email doesn’t come directly from Apple, we assume that labels and distribution services were notified about the upcoming launch, and they required labels to submit gallery content for the new iTunes 11 layout. However, Thanksgiving weekend is upon us, so we doubt that Apple would launch iTunes 11 over the long weekend. If the email is legit, we’re guessing iTunes 11 will arrive early next week.

iTunes 11 is said to bring better iCloud integration, as well as more-seamless support with iOS 6 and all the newer iOS devices. And obviously, a user interface refresh seems to be in the works as well, with better images and hopefully easier navigation. Both the iTunes Store and the App Store are said to get makeovers.

Samsung Galaxy S4 To Get MWC Announcement?

Samsung logoThere are whispers going on at Mobilegeeks that South Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung will lift the veil on their new flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S4 sometime at the end of February 2013, which means we could very well be looking at a Mobile World Congress debut next year which tends to happen in February at Barcelona, Spain. Mobilegeeks does have a pretty good track record when it comes to rumors, as they also correctly reported about the Galaxy Premier in October.

Needless to say, you can be very sure that the Samsung Galaxy S4, where released, will be a tour de force when it comes to hardware and system specifications. So far, we believe that the new Galaxy S4 will come with a new Super AMOLED display that blows the rest of the competition out of the water, and if rumors of a new iPhone 5S that will launch in early 2013 starting to gather momentum, it would be wise for Samsung to launch a pre-emptive strike with the Galaxy S4.

Samsung Galaxy S IV tipped for Feb. 2013, 13MP camera and A15 quad-core chip

We’ve been hearing whispers about Samsung‘s next flagship handset, the Galaxy S IV, for quite some time now, but as time moves forward, the more that rumors start to heat up. This time, we’re hearing that the Galaxy S IV will launch in late February, and will pack in Samsung’s Exynos 5450 chipset with a quad-core Cortex-A15 processor, and a 13MP camera.

A 13MP camera wouldn’t be crazy, but we also shouldn’t get our hopes up too soon. Samsung’s Galaxy Note II was supposed to have a 13MP sensor, but the company went with the old 8MP sensor instead because Sony couldn’t make enough due to other phones that they had deals with. However, it might be different this time around, and Samsung could be going all-in for 2013.

On top of the camera and chipset rumors, we heard a few days ago that Samsung would be unveiling their own 5-inch 1080p smartphone display at CES 2013, in order to take on HTC who launched the first device in the US to have a 5-inch 1080p screen. Some are saying that Samsung’s rumored 5-incher will be used in their Galaxy S IV.

While we should expect a powerhouse of a device with the Galaxy S IV, we’ll be taking these rumors with a grain of salt until we hear more info about it, hopefully at CES come January. It’s rumored that the Galaxy S IV will be officially revealed at Mobile World Congress, though, which happens in late February. However, Samsung has said that the February launch date for the GSIV are “not true,” so we’re not really sure when to expect the new phone.

Rumor: OS X 10.9 Will Get Siri and Apple Maps Integration

Apple is reportedly testing Siri and Apple Maps integration for the next-gen version of its operating system, OS X 10.9. It makes perfect sense that they’d test two marquee (if controversial) features on the desktop. But that doesn’t mean they’ll be in the final product. More »
