Apple rumored to begin trial production of iPhone 5S by the end of the year

While Android manufacturers come up with major hardware refreshes every year for their flagship devices, Apple on the other hand tends to release major updates every two years, with minor refreshes released in between. This has resulted in the iPhone 3G which was followed by the 3GS, followed by the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S. Based on this pattern, we can expect Apple to release an iPhone 5S next year, or whatever it will be called. According to Digitimes who relayed a report from Commercial Times, this certainly seems to be the case and word has it that Apple could be set to begin trial production of the iPhone 5S as early as December.

Assuming the trial production is successful, volume production could begin as early as Q1 2013, suggesting that the iPhone 5’s successor could be released earlier than usual. Apple’s iPhone refreshes have typically been revealed at the Cupertino company’s WWDC event in the middle of the year, although this cycle was broken by the iPhone 4S which was revealed in the Fall, and the iPhone 5 which was similarly revealed in the Fall of this year. Of course rumors being rumors, they shouldn’t be taken too seriously although with Apple refreshing the iPad less than a year since its third-gen model, an early iPhone 5S wouldn’t be surprising. Either way take this with a grain of salt for now, but let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Grand Theft Auto V details leak in magazine article

While Game Informer might have released some more details of Grand Theft Auto V in their latest issue, another magazine has a few more details to throw at us. ShortList Magazine leaked a screenshot from the game, as well as some background info on one of the protagonists in the magazine’s latest issue.

The screenshot is of what appears to be one of the game’s protagonists riding a personal watercraft and firing a submachine gun back at what we think are police officers trying to catch him. The personal watercraft has “Los Santos Beach” and “Lifeguard” inscribed on it, which makes us believe that the watercraft was stolen (obviously).

The magazine also provides us with a few details and some background information about the protagonist. The magazine explains that “the protagonist is an East Coast gangster” who moved to Los Santos (Rockstar‘s take on Los Angeles) for a fresh, new start. “But, as in The Godfather III – just as he thought he was out, they pulled him back in.”

The screenshot has since been removed, proving that we now bear an important leaked piece of Grand Theft Auto V information. While gamers were able to operate watercrafts in past Grand Theft Auto installments, maybe we’ll see more interactive features dealing with that front in the upcoming sequel.

Nokia Lumia 920T leaks, comes with faster Snapdragon S4 and Adreno 320 GPU

China Mobile is set to release Nokia‘s flagship smartphone, the Lumia 920, on December 5. It’ll be called the Lumia 920T, and the carrier just leaked some more details about the device. One particular piece of information is that the processor in the leaked Lumia 920T will be slightly faster than the US version of the 920.

China Mobile has shown off their version of the Lumia 920 that will come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro MSM8960T chipset, which comes with an Adreno 320 GPU. The US version runs off of the Qualcomm S4 Plus MSM8960 chipset that only has an Adreno 225 GPU. Obviously, we’re not sure how much faster the chip will be in the new phone, but it’s said that the 320 offers nearly triple the performance of the 225.

While it might seem like Nokia is shafting their customers in other countries who only have the Lumia 920, the reason why Nokia had to use the MSM8960T chipset is said to be because it is the only chipset that supports China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA and TD-LTE standards. This seems like valid excuse, but also makes us bummed.

While the 920T will certainly offer quicker performance than the regular 920, we’re curious as to how much faster the device will be and if users will notice a significant difference between the two. The Adreno 320 GPU is being used with the Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 chip on some US phones like LG Optimus G and Google’s Nexus 4.

Sony working on a “mysterious” camera set to debut in 2013 [Rumor]

The camera market is pretty competitive these days and if manufacturers hope to stay ahead of each other, they will have to come up with something innovative. That being said, the folks at Sony Alpha Rumors have received a tip from one of their highly trusted sources who has informed them that Sony has a “mysterious” new camera coming in 2013. Unfortunately apart from that tip, the source did not reveal any of the details of the alleged camera, except that this will be a camera that we have yet to see being done by other camera manufacturers. Sounds pretty promising assuming it is true. This mysterious camera is scheduled for a 2013 release so could we be seeing it announced at CES 2013? Either way since there’s really not much to go on, it’s hard to speculate at what it might be, but what do you guys think Sony could have up their sleeves that will set them apart from everyone else?

Samsung rumored to put chip facility expansion on hold due to loss of orders from Apple

Samsung and Apple certainly aren’t friends, and it’s safe to say after the legal back and forth between both companies, we wouldn’t be surprised if neither company wanted anything to do with the other, apart from perhaps a professional relationship. Now there have been rumors that suggested that Apple could be reducing their reliance on Samsung not only to produce their displays, but also manufacturing their chips used in their iOS devices. Microsoft rumored to be scaling up Windows Phone 8 displays, while scaling down Windows RT

Yesterday we reported on a ZTE Windows Phone 8 device that came with an alleged 5.9” display and a Full HD resolution. We expressed our doubt, especially since Microsoft has not officially announced their support for resolutions beyond 720p HD, so either ZTE had their facts wrong or they knew something we didn’t. While we still remain skeptical, a new rumor has emerged via @MS_Nerd who has suggested that Microsoft is currently working on scaling up Windows Phone 8 to displays up to 7”, while also working on scaling down Windows RT to a smaller display of 8.4”.

“ZTE Blade 8: WP8 counts 3 pixels as 2. MSFT adding stylus support in OneNote, IE & Reader. Figuring out how to reach 7″ size with WP or RT.

Another project with select members of Surface & Nook teams, using RT on a 8.4″ screen exploring it from the other side, no stylus yet.”

What do you guys make of this? Could we be seeing additional display resolution support in future Windows Phone 8 updates? We’ll take this with a grain of salt for now and suggest that you do the same.

Some notebook vendors expected to continue pushing Windows 7 devices for the remainder of the year [Rumor]

Windows 7It wasn’t too long ago that Windows 8 was released to the masses which resulted in 4 million upgrades in less than a week, which means logically we can expect to see manufacturers start updating their products with the latest Windows operating system, right? While that might hold true for some companies, a report from Digitimes has suggested that some notebook manufacturers (no names were mentioned) will continue hawking their Windows 7 products in hopes to finish off their current inventory for the remainder of the year.

In fact their source has revealed to them that some manufacturers are offering extremely low-priced notebooks around $359-399 in hopes that it will attract more customers. The report from Digitimes has also suggested that demand for Windows 8 notebooks will only take place in the first half of 2013. Digitimes might not be the most accurate when it comes to these sorts of insider information, but they have been right in the past so perhaps taking this with a grain of salt might be a good idea for now, but what do you guys think? Would you rather get a notebook with Windows 7 that’s priced really low, or would you rather spend a bit more and get one optimized for Windows 8?

Did ZTE just out a Windows Phone 8 handset with a 5.9″ Full HD display?

With the release of Windows Phone 8, we are starting to see devices from Nokia and HTC that sport some pretty big screens, displays large enough to compete with some of the higher-end Android phones out there. However it looks like ZTE might have both companies beat – in fact it seems that ZTE might even have Android manufacturers beat with the release of their upcoming Windows Phone 8 device. Lu Qian Hao, the head of market strategy for ZTE has recently posted a photo (pictured above) on Weibo of the company’s upcoming handset.

Along with the photo, Lu also wrote that ZTE’s new Windows Phone 8 handset will feature a display of 5.9”, which is larger than the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, and a resolution of 1920×1080! The handset is also expected to feature DTS audio technology which should help with the audio experience, although in all honesty it’s hard to beat a set of actual speakers. At this point in time we have to stop and take a step back because this is a bit odd considering that Microsoft never announced support for Full HD displays; that and the fact that the phone in the photo above is sporting the old Windows Phone 7.x logo makes it all the more suspicious. We suggest you take this with huge shovels of salt for now and hopefully ZTE will be able to clarify those details in the near future.

Apple OS X 10.9 appears across the web

Apple may have just released OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion a few months ago, but that doesn’t mean the next version isn’t being worked and tested on. According to several websites, they have been noticing visits from users with machines listed as running OS X 10.9, which would be Apple’s next major OS X update.

Obviously, not a large number of hits are coming from these supposed OS X 10.9 machines. AppleInsider said they have received over 30 total visitors that were marked using “Intel 10.9″, and other websites have reported a few visitors with OS X 10.9 machines as well. However, we at SlashGear haven’t spotted any OS X 10.9 activity yet.

The small number of computers that are supposedly running OS X 10.9 could mean that Apple is already testing very early betas of the next major OS X update, and only a select handful are trying it out at the moment. Of course, these statistics can be faked, so it’s definitely something to take with a grain of salt.

However, it’s obvious that Apple will release a major update to OS X at some point in the future, and they’ve been on a yearly release schedule recently, so it could be as far ahead as summer 2013 before we see 10.9 pop up. The only other question remains, however: What cat will Apple give its next major OS X update this time around?
