13″ MacBook Pro with Retina display “confirmed” for Apple’s 23rd of October event

If you think a 13” MacBook Pro is more portable versus a 15” one, you may have heard rumors that Apple could be announcing a 13” MacBook Pro with Retina display alongside the iPad mini, which according to the rumors, has been pegged for a 23rd of October announcement. That being said, it seems that the 13” MacBook Pro with Retina display has been “confirmed” for Apple’s event. This is according to the folks at 9to5 Mac who have been tipped off by a reliable source from a high-profile US retailer.

The specs of the device were not mentioned, although according to their source, the 13” MacBook Pro will not only be smaller, but is also expected to be thinner and lighter compared to its 15” Retina counterpart which was launched earlier this year. It will also come in two different configurations and will be up for purchase “soon” after its introduction. In any case we’re a little over a week before the rumored 23rd of October event, so we guess we won’t have long to wait to see if the rumors pan out, so check back with us then for the details.

Amazon rumored to be interested in acquiring Texas Instruments’ mobile chip division

Amazon logoEarlier this month, we reported that Texas Instruments was looking to expand beyond the mobile chip market (i.e. smartphones and tablets) and venture into other industries, such as industrial, automotive and etc. Now it seems that according to a report by Israeli financial newspaper, Calcalist, it has been suggested that Amazon is looking to buy the mobile chip division of Texas Instruments in a bid to start making their own chips. If that is indeed the case, Amazon could be a potential rival for companies such as Apple, Samsung, Qualcomm, NVIDIA as those are companies that design their own chips as well.

When asked by Calcalist about the rumors, Texas Instruments’ spokeswoman replied by saying that the company refrains from commenting on rumors. At the moment Texas Instruments’ OMAP processors can be found in Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets, and given that Amazon has long been producing their own hardware, would it be that much of a stretch to imagine that they might be interested in a greater control over the production? What do you guys make of this? Could you start seeing Amazon producing their own chipsets in the future if these rumors are true?

Alleged iPad mini battery photo surfaces, reveals 4,490mAh battery

The iPad mini launch event is scheduled for the 23rd of October – at least that’s what the reports are claiming (formal invitations have yet to be sent). Specs of the device are still unknown, but speculated, and thanks to the folks at Mac Rumors, they have received a set of photos that claim to be the iPad mini’s battery. It’s hard to tell if it’s the real deal, but we guess we can speculate for now. So what sort of battery life are we looking at for the iPad mini? The third-gen iPad features a pretty impressive battery life but will the iPad mini be able to pack that much battery into its smaller frame?

Well according to the labels, the alleged iPad mini battery runs at 3.72 volts and offers 16.7 Whr or energy on a 4,490mAh battery. This places the iPad mini’s battery life between the iPhone 5’s 5.45 Whr and the third-gen iPad’s at a whopping 42.5 Whr. This isn’t too surprising as many had speculated that the iPad mini would resemble the iPad 2 more than the new iPad. Either way with rumors suggesting that it will be WiFi only and without a Retina display, we expect that the 16.7 Whr battery will last you a good while, but we will need to test it out for ourselves before coming to a proper conclusion. Either way hopefully all will be revealed at Apple’s rumored 23rd of October event, so stay tuned!

13″ MacBook Pro with Retina display rumored to be facing production quality issues as well

It seems that not only is Apple facing low yield rates for the iPhone 5 (largely in thanks to their choice of going with the aluminum unibody chassis), a recent report from Digitimes has suggested that Apple is facing the same issue with its MacBook Pro as well. To be more specific, it seems that the rumored 13” MacBook Pros with Retina displays are facing low yield rates due to an issue with the Retina displays. Shipments of the alleged laptop was originally pegged for a September release, although word has it that shipments are now expected to take place in October instead.

At the same time, it seems that the rumored iPad mini is also facing production issues. The report has stated that the iPad mini is supposedly “suffering low yields for components such as the display and chassis,” and while it is said to use the same material as the current-gen iPad, it is expected to sport a different design and “tactile feel”, whatever that’s supposed to mean. However it should be noted that Digitimes does not have the best track record when it comes to reporting Apple rumors, and since neither the 13” MacBook Pro with Retina display nor the iPad mini has been made official, we suggest you take this with a grain of salt for now.

iPad mini announcement rumored for 23rd October

It wasn’t too long when rumors suggested that Apple could be sending out invites on the 10th of October for an event that would supposedly launch the new iPad mini. Given that it’s already the 12th, it’s safe to say that those rumors did not pan out. Now it seems that a recent set of rumors has suggested that Apple’s event will be held on the 23rd of October instead, which coincidentally (or perhaps not) is only a few days before Microsoft’s Surface Windows 8 tablet goes on sale, so maybe Apple wants to steal a little thunder from Microsoft’s new hardware. Assuming these rumors are to be believed, we could see Apple launch the iPad mini sometime in November. We will be taking this information with a grain of salt for now, although considering that it was AllThingsD who shared the 23rd of October date, and with their pretty accurate track record, perhaps this date might be more credible. Either way do check back with us in the following weeks to see if it pans out. In the meantime check out our iPad mini rumor round-up for a better idea of what you might be able to expect.

Apple reportedly looking to expand iPhone production to Foxconn International Holdings

As some of you guys are probably aware by now, Apple’s manufacturer, Foxconn, is reportedly facing an issue with production quality which is hampering the amount of iPhone 5 units that can be produced and shipped, resulting in long wait times for customers to get their phones. While it is unclear as to whether this is a result of this problem, reports have indicated that Apple is looking to expand their iPhone production beyond Foxconn Technology to one of their subsidiaries instead – Foxconn International Holdings (FIH).

FIH is a pretty big name in the smartphone manufacturing industry and they have built products for Nokia, Huawei and ZTE in the past, so assuming this report is accurate, this would be the first time they will be producing devices for Apple. FIH is expected to receive orders for the iPhone 5 soon and could begin production in the next few months. Like we said earlier, it is unclear as to why Apple decided to expand to FIH, but hopefully this means that wait time on iPhone 5 orders will be significantly reduced.
