First pictures of iPhone 5 display (Rumor)

The next generation iPhone, where many have dubbed it the iPhone 5 in the process, seemed to have its display leaked in a bunch of fresh photos, offering a glimpse at the alleged 4” display which has been touted by many to arrive on the new smartphone. The images that you see above do not seem to reveal too much since the unit remains unpowered, at least it is the first to show off the alleged larger display. It does seem as though the display’s connectors, which was shown in an additional close-up shot, do seem to point towards a layout that is not too different from its predecessor’s flex cables.

4” will certainly be larger than the current 3.5” display as found on the current generation iPhone, but then again, when you consider what we have on the Android front, 4” is relatively smaller by some. No idea on the final resolution count as well as pixel density of the next generation iPhone or iPhone 5, but I guess we will have to wait until later this year – most probably in September, to hear more about the new iPhone.

OnLive reportedly shutting down, new company forming in its wake (update: OnLive says ‘of course not’)

Well, here’s a bit of a shocker. After a strong showing at E3 and partnerships with companies like OUYA, gaming service OnLive is reportedly closing down, with an entire staff layoff resulting. At a glance, this sure feels a lot like the similar rise and fall of InstantAction, which was attempting to pull off something similar with cloud-based gaming. Polygon is reporting the story as relayed to the site by game developer Brian Fargo. We’ve reached out to the company and received a non-comment comment, “We don’t respond to rumors and have no comment.” Our OnLive contact also used the opportunity to plug its Google TV tie-ins and few giveaways — so, for the moment at least, things seem to be moving along as usual.

Update: Joystiq has reached out for comment as well, getting a similar, yet decidedly more blunt response: “We don’t respond to rumors, but of course not.” Blunt response or no, we’re sure this isn’t the last we’ll be hearing about this one.

Update 2: We reached out to OnLive again for clarification on whether the denial pertained to both the shutdown and layoff rumors. The response reads thusly: “I have no comment on the news other than to say the OnLive service is not shutting down. I’m sorry I cannot be more specific.

Update 3: Martyn Williams from IDG has reported there are employees leaving the OnLive offices with moving boxes.

iPad mini tipped for ITO coating tech

The potential design of the iPad mini was fervently detailed in several reports this week, but not much is known surrounding the specs or technology behind the device. DigiTimes reports that Efun Technology, a company that produces film coatings for touchscreens on smartphones and tablets, has been tipped for a profit increase over a possible deal with Apple. The company would supply ITO film coatings for the iPad mini as well as future iPads.

The indium tin oxide coating is a transparent substance that can conduct electricity, designed to act as an EMI shield in order to reduce interference from radio waves. That should help reduce interference to 3G or WiFi radios located on mobile devices, with the technology already reportedly in use on various Samsung handsets. Efun has seen its profits double as a result of the production of the technology, with recent favourable financial information tipping a deal with Apple.

This week design details were alluded to in several separate reports. The iPad mini will reportedly use a much thinner bezel, with users being able to grasp the tablet from the back rather than with a thumb grip from the sides. The volume buttons may also feature separate physical buttons rather than the volume rocker found on the current iPad.

Schematics that were first discovered back in April back up the design reports, suggesting that the tablet will also be much thinner than the current iPad. Apple had to make a thickness concession with the current iPad due to the Retina display and huge increase in battery capacity, features which won’t make the jump to the iPad mini, allowing for a thinner device as a result. Reports all seem to point towards a 7.85-inch screen, with Apple tipped to unveil the iPad mini on September 12th alongside the next iPhone.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean “confirmed” for the Samsung Galaxy S2

A week ago we reported that according to SamMobile, rumor had it that the Samsung Galaxy S2 among other Samsung devices would be receiving the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. Well the folks at SamMobile are back again and this time according to one of their sources, they have “confirmed” that the Galaxy S2 will indeed receive the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update and that Samsung is currently in the process of testing it. They also expect that the update should roll out in the September-October timeframe. However given that there has been no official confirmation from Samsung themselves, we suggest that you not get your hopes up just yet in order to avoid disappointment. In the meantime for Galaxy S3 owners, the update is indeed real and a leaked version of the test firmware can be downloaded, albeit at your own risk although the full and final version is rumored for an August 29th release. In any case we suggest you take this with a grain of salt and remember, seeing is believing! Be sure to check back with us at a later date for more info.

New iPad mini 3D rendering looks pretty convincing

A couple of days ago, we reported that the folks at 9to5 Mac have drawn up a rendering of Apple’s rumored iPad mini based on the leaked specs and schematics of the device so far. Well if you’re looking for a slightly cleaner and more “official” looking rendering, designer Maurizio Vitale has come with several 3D renderings of what the iPad mini could look like. Much like the earlier renderings, this design is based on the information that is available out there. Granted that the information could merely be rumors and have no substance to them, we guess it doesn’t hurt to see what the iPad mini could look like assuming the rumors turn out to be true! As expected, this particular rendering features a smaller looking iPad that is reminiscent of the iPod touch with thinner bezels, although we have to admit that it looks pretty good. No word if and when Apple will be announcing such a device, but rumors have pegged it for a possible September announcement alongside Apple’s next-gen iPhone.

Motorola Droid RAZR HD rumored to feature 8MP camera and will not come in a MAXX edition

Last week we reported that according to rumors, the upcoming Motorola Droid RAZR HD was expected to get a MAXX version, much like its predecessor, the Droid RAZR. Thanks to a tipster who tipped off the folks at Phone Arena, apparently this will not be the case and that the Motorola Droid RAZR HD will be the only device. While this might make it easier for users since they don’t have to choose between phones, the tipster also went on to reveal that the Motorola Droid RAZR HD will only have a battery with a capacity of 2,530mAh. This is probably kind of a bummer to those who were looking forward to seeing a battery of 3,300mAh which can be found in the RAZR MAXX. Other specs “confirmed” by the tipster includes a 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8960 processor, a microSD card slot and an 8MP rear-facing camera, which seems to contradict earlier rumors of a 13MP camera instead.

Sony NEX-5R rumored to feature phase detection AF pixels on its sensor

According to the rumors, Sony is expected to unveil new mirrorless cameras which is part of their NEX lineup. This includes the NEX-5R and the NEX-6, both of which are expected to be announced in September. While the specs of either camera has yet to be officially confirmed, the folks at Sony Alhpa Rumors have been tipped off regarding one of the features of the NEX-5R, and that is it will sport a new 16MP image sensor with phase detection AF pixels. This is reportedly the same technology that is currently being used on Canon’s first mirrorless camera, the EOS M, and it basically allows for much faster autofocusing and a more reliable means of tracking moving objects. They have also speculated that this new 16MP sensor could make its way onto the NEX-6 as well, which might not be so surprising considering that the NEX-6 was rumored to have a new 16MP sensor as well. Assuming the tipster is to be believed, this could be one of the selling points for the NEX-5R/6, but as with all rumors, we suggest taking this with a grain of salt for now.
