Carriers rumored to be testing nano-SIMs for the next-gen iPhone

A couple of days ago we reported on a rumor that European carriers were stockpiling nano-SIMs in anticipation of the iPhone 5. Now it seems that the rumors have been taken up one level as there are now reports (via BGR) that Apple is supplying various carriers with nano-SIM adapters so that the carriers will be able to test how the nano-SIMs work on their networks. With Apple submitting its own nano-SIM design to be used as a standard, many have believed that the nano-SIM could be making its way into the next-gen iPhone. With a smaller SIM card, it is expected that it should give Apple a bit more space to work with in which they will be able to add other features into the phone that they previously might not have been able to, such as 4G LTE, a larger battery, etc. Of course all of this is simply rumor for now since nothing can be confirmed yet, so we suggest you take this with a grain of salt for now until the iPhone 5 (or whatever it’s going to be called) has been revealed.

Windows Phone 8 devices to hit the market in November?

Windows Phone 8Yesterday Microsoft announced that Windows 8 will be arriving on October 26th, but what about Windows Phone 8? Well, according to ZDNet’s sources, Windows Phone 8 handsets will be released in November later this year. The Windows 8 RTM is said to reach manufacturers in September, so by then we should start seeing more leaks of some upcoming Windows 8 devices (hooray!). We’re not sure why Microsoft isn’t releasing Windows Phone 8 at the same time as Windows 8 but chances are – there’s still a lot of work to be done. Also, Microsoft could be planning a separate release so that each operating system would get more focus instead of both of them sharing the limelight. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see whether these rumors pan out.

iPhone 5: a July round-up of pre-release leaks, tips, and rumors

It’s time to take another look at what Apple’s next-generation iPhone is squaring up to be, and which rumors, tips, and leaks are looking good enough to take heed in. Several notions about the iPhone 5, or whatever it’ll end up being called, have been solidified in the glimpse of iOS 6 we’ve seen already this summer, starting with Apple Maps. This iPhone will take one of the last bits of software dominance that the Android platform had thus far been holding over Apple’s head and will make it all the better for the time iOS lovers spent without it.

Next you’ll find that iOS 6 allows the iPhone to be a video chat machine not just when you’re in a Wi-fi area, but at least inside your 3G zones across the earth as well. By the time the iPhone 5 is released, this ability may well be spread to 4G LTE as well, we’ll just have to wait and see. The next-generation iPhone will have essentially the same look on the inside, with a few software tweaks, but its outside is still very much up to debate.

It’s been tipped several times that this iPhone will have a larger screen, something like 4+ inches this time around, but whether or not this will have an effect on the device’s width is seeming to fall in favor of being the same width of the iPhone 4S as it stands now. This device will simply be taller, not fatter. And it certainly won’t be thicker, with the most recent tip being that this device will be the thinnest iPhone yet, bordering on the thinness of the iPod touch.

Each of the images above and below come from the post iPhone 5 renders show most amazing vision yet. They’re not official renders, and they’re not photographs, they’re just fabulous.

The front of the device will more than likely be glass like previous iPhones have been, while the back will likely have a combination of glass and aluminum. The center of the device’s back has been leaked as being a lovely sheet of aluminum in a possible couple different shades of gray, while the top and bottom of the device on the back will be glass to allow signals to sneak in and out. The back of the device will also likely have a next-level camera of some sort with 1080p video recording abilities as well.

Have a peek at our timeline below to get up to date on all things iPhone 5, and stay tuned!

That Thinner iPhone Screen Could Mean Insanely Good Battery Life [Rumors]

There’s a rumor floating around today that the next iPhone will use a thinner display technology made by Sharp. But what does that actually mean for you? Maybe insanely good battery life. Or, perhaps a 4G LTE iPhone that can make it through the day. More »

Windows Phone 8 rumored to receive native screenshot capture ability

Windows Phone 8While the ability to take screenshots with your phone might not be an issue for some, it can be incredibly convenient for times when you’re trying to capture an error message, screenshot a funny conversation or a receipt for a purchase you made online. Unfortunately Windows Phone has not included that ability ever since it was introduced but assuming WPDang has their facts right, that could soon change with Windows Phone 8. The website is reporting that a native screenshot capture ability will be introduced in the upcoming Windows Phone 8 with a key combination of Start plus the Camera button. Of course we are unable to verify this at the moment, but Windows Phone users, what do you think? Is a native screenshot capture ability a feature you felt was sorely missing from the platform, or does it not make a difference to you at all?

Nintendo rumored to have made the Wii U Pro controller at Activision’s behest

One of the distinct differences between the Nintendo Wii/Wii U and Sony and Microsoft’s PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 would be its controller. After all in such a competitive industry, Nintendo had to set itself apart from the competition, right? If you think so too, you might be wondering why did Nintendo introduce the Wii U Pro controller then? While this is by no means official, industry analyst Michael Pachter spoke out during the Develop conference that the reason behind the Wii U Pro controller was because of companies like Activision, who reportedly told Nintendo that they will not be bringing games like Call of Duty onto their console if they did not offer a more “conventional” controller.

Given the popularity and influence of such huge games that makes gamers choose between consoles (i.e. Halo for Xbox, God of War for Sony, etc), perhaps Nintendo decided that games like Call of Duty were too big to pass up on, but what do you guys think? Do you think that Nintendo really gave in for Call of Duty, or do you think that the Wii U Pro controller will also help make games easier to port onto the Wii U, therefore giving developers more reason to develop/port games onto the console?

In-cell displays for the next-gen iPhone rumored to be in mass production

It has been rumored  in the past that the next-gen iPhone could very well feature an in-cell display technology, making the iPhone thinner and possibly lighter at the same time, and improving image quality as well. While that remains to be seen, a report at the Wall Street Journal has revealed that it may very well be the case, and that mass production of said displays have already begun. They have named manufacturers such as Sharp, Japan Display Inc. (a joint effort of Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba) and LG Display as being the ones responsible for the in-cell display technology used for the next-gen iPhone. This seems to corroborate earlier rumors of Sony’s involvement, but will this report pan out? After all it’s not surprising to see iPhone rumors running rampant around this time of the year, but until Apple launches the phone in an official capacity, we suggest taking this with a grain of salt for now.

Next iPhone tipped for thinner screen as carriers stock up on nano-SIMs

Current reports indicate that Apple will move to a larger screen on the next iPhone, bringing with it an increase in resolution. Now the Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is planning to use a new type of touchscreen that’s thinner than current technologies. Sharp, Japan Display, and LG are all said to be producing in-cell touch panels for the next iPhone, according to sources familiar with the matter.

In-cell technology integrates the touch sensors directly into the LCD, negating the need for an additional touch layer which adds thickness to the screen. The difference is only around 0.5mm, but the removal of that layer will also result in improved screen quality. In addition, the Wall Street Journal says that Apple’s supply chain would be simplified, and that the company would ultimately cut costs as a result of the move.

That space could allow for the device to be slightly thinner, or give Apple extra space for additional components. The use of an even smaller SIM card would also give Apple more room to play with, and European carriers are reportedly stocking up on the nano-SIM that was recently approved. The going theory is that Apple will use the new standard in the next iPhone, with the nano-SIM being 40% smaller than current micro-SIMs. The crucial piece of information to take away is that Apple reportedly designed the next iPhone around the new nano-SIM, which puts the standard war with RIM, Motorola, and Nokia into a whole new perspective.

The next iPhone is said to have 3.95-inch screen with a 1136×640 resolution, a move to an aspect ratio close to 16:9. Leaked backplates show that the handset will feature a two tone aluminium back, as well as a new 19-pin dock connector and what look to be machine drilled speaker and microphone holes. The core apps of iOS6 will take advantage of the new resolution, and Apple will reportedly encourage developers to redesign their own apps to do the same.

Possible photo of next-generation white iPhone front leaked?

Rumors of new Apple devices surface almost daily. Whether it be the iPad Mini or iPhone 5, people are getting really excited by the next Apple product. Apple.Pro, a recurring part leaker, has just discovered a photo of a claimed next-generation iPhone front, which has a couple of interesting features.

To start, this is the firs time a white iPhone 5 model or front has surfaced, which will please many ‘white iPhone” fans.  Another interesting feature is the fact that the FaceTime camera has been shifted left and is now above the speaker. It’s not much of a change, but who knows what other features could be included internally.

Of course we don’t know for sure if this is actually the front of the iPhone 5 and we won’t know until it actually comes out officially, but this very well could be an Apple design change as it is minimal and looks more natural.

What do you think of this design change? Let us know in the comments section and we’ll keep you updated as more info becomes available.
