AllThingsD is reporting that the next Kindle Fire will be thinner and lighter than the current Kindle Fire with a better display, boosting the pixels to a 1280 x 800 resolution. Supposedly, Amazon is targeting the second half of the year for the release—late in the third quarter, to be a little more specific. More »
The often rumored Nokia Lumia 910 has proven to be an ephemeral spirit so far. If the company’s Remote Developer Access tool is an indicator, though, it may become corporeal before too long. A Nokiapoweruser reader has spotted the phone’s name hanging out as one of the selectable devices. Unfortunately, we’re not getting much more than that: there’s no hardware specifications lurking about that we know of. Earlier rumors had it being a slight spin on the Lumia 900 with a 12-megapixel camera and even a Verizon edition, but the lack of hard evidence outside of the name may leave us all wondering for some time yet as to what Espoo’s flagship might get in a refresh. We won’t be shocked if any future overhaul waits for Microsoft’s latest and greatest platform to arrive.

I’ve been talking to some people on Twitter about the technical feasibility of Apple one day introducing a smaller and lighter iPad. The general opinion I’m seeing is that it would require a change to the dimension of the screen in points, or the touch targets would be so small that it’d be impossible to tap them accurately. I’m going to lay out my argument for why I think it would be possible to shrink the screen size, maintain the same number of points, and maintain a perfectly usable UI. More »
Amazon’s new Kindle Fire set to debut in early August? (update: maybe July)
Posted in: Today's ChiliWe knew that there would be another Kindle Fire at some point, but we didn’t know when it would arrive, or exactly what it’d look like. If the latest report from the China Times is true, however, we can expect Amazon’s new slate to ship around August 7th. Like the first Fire, this new version will be built by Quanta, with a metal chassis and displays provided by LG and Panasonic. Other details, like its size or the contents within said metallic frame, are still nowhere to be found. What we can tell you is that the new tablet can’t get here fast enough for Amazon given the Fire’s declining sales numbers and its fresh competition from Mountain View.
Update: Looks like something was lost in translation — it turns out the China Times report actually states that the new Kindle Fire is set to make its appearance in July or August, not specifically on August 7th.

iPad mini rumors resurface like so many leftovers, have production start in September
Posted in: Today's ChiliThere have been rumors of a shrunken iPad since time immemorial, so you’ll have to forgive us if we look at most fresh claims with a jaded eye. Still, when both Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal hear that Apple is close to producing a tablet with an 8-inch or smaller screen, there might be some fire to go with the smoke. What details that exist are unsurprisingly thin outside of the dimensions, although Bloomberg understands that there won’t be a Retina display like in the current 9.7-inch slab. That’s not a shock given the size and likely cost concerns — we’re more interested in the talk of nearing production plans with an uncanny level of synchronicity. The Wall Street Journal has caught murmurs that volume production ramps up in September, while its business paper rival Bloomberg thinks that an announcement could come “by October.” We still won’t be shocked if these are just wild misinterpretations of an upsized iPod touch or become nothing but vapor. Should they pan out, however, our good friend the Nexus 7 could feel some heat this fall.
