New iPad Mini Shortages Could Be Attributed To Sharp’s Low Yield Of Displays [Rumor]
Posted in: Today's ChiliApple’s iPad mini with Retina display was announced recently but interestingly enough unlike the iPad Air which was put up for pre-order with a release pegged for the 1st if November, the new iPad mini was not given the same treatment, although it was scheduled for a release later in November. A recent statement made by Tim Cook has also suggested that there might not be enough units to meet the demand, indicating that would-be iPad mini customers would be in for a wait. Now thanks to a report from DigiTimes, it has been suggested that one of the reasons behind the possible delay is due to Sharp’s low yield of the displays for the iPad mini.
Their report claims that currently only two companies are responsible for the iPad mini’s Retina display and they are LG and Sharp, with LG responsible for the bulk of the displays at 60%, while Sharp will account for the remaining 40%. It seems that other manufacturers, such as AU Optronics and Innolux, both of whom have been linked to Apple in the past, have tried to get orders for the new iPad mini but were unsuccessful. These manufacturing problems does not come as a complete surprise as it has been suggested back in April this year that manufacturing problems for the Retina display would cause delays/shortages. We’re not sure just how big of an impact this will have so we guess we will just have to wait and see for ourselves, but hopefully it won’t be too long.

Folks from Facebook apparently met with BlackBerry last week to discuss the idea of a potential bid

There have been rumors that Amazon is planning to launch a smartphone of their own come 2014 and according to a recent report by Apple Insider, they claim that their sources have informed them of some of the upcoming features of the phone. This includes advanced 3D gestures and eye-tracking input. This seems to be in line with earlier rumors suggesting that Amazon’s smartphone would utilize 3D in some way. Amazon has been rumored to have partnered with three key compact camera module makers that will help enable these features in their phone.
The phone is said to pack 6 camera modules: 4 VGA cameras placed at the corners of the phone, while the remaining two will be a 13MP rear-facing camera, while the front-facing camera is said to be a 12MP one. Additional information about the device includes a 4.7” touchscreen display and a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor on board. Assuming that the information is accurate, Amazon’s take on the smartphone would definitely be a unique one and will help differentiate itself from the pack. However given that chances are Amazon will most likely use the same operating system found on their Kindle Fire tablets, that alone would be differentiation enough. Will this 3D gestures and eye tracking prove to be a key selling point, or will be end up being a novelty? What do you guys think?

We know that BlackBerry is looking to sell itself to the highest bidder, and while they might have signed a letter of intent with Fairfax Financial, it has not stopped them from shopping for alternatives. There have been many players named so far, such a BlackBerry’s own founder himself, Apple’s ex-CEO John Sculley, and BlackBerry has even approached the likes of Google, Intel, and Samsung to talk about possibly bidding for their company. Well the latest report comes from The Wall Street Journal who claims that BlackBerry executives had reportedly flown to California last week to meet up with Facebook to talk potential bids, although it is unclear if Facebook is receptive to the idea or not.
There have been many rumors suggesting that Facebook is looking to build their own smartphone in the past, and acquiring BlackBerry would definitely give them the resources to do so. Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has denied in the past that Facebook would be doing such a thing, stating that it would be the wrong strategy for the social network. Given that previous Facebook phone attempts, like the HTC First, weren’t exactly hits, we’re not sure if Facebook would like to go down that path again. Either way take it with a grain of salt for now but BlackBerry sure is shopping pretty hard and at this rate, we’re not sure if they will be able to close a deal by November like they had originally intended.

Nikon has been rumored to be getting themselves ready for a launch of one of their new cameras, a certain Nikon DF which is allegedly a hybrid full-frame mirrorless camera system, akin to Sony’s recently announced A7 AND A7R products. We had heard that an early November announcement of the camera was a possibility and now according to Nikon Rumors, an announcement for the 5th of November will most likely be taking place. We’re not sure where they are getting their information from, but presumably it is coming from one of their sources, so we guess you should take this news with a grain of salt for now.
As to what we might be able to expect, well the Nikon DF is said to feature a body whose design is similar to that of the Nikon FM2, giving it a more retro look. It is said to sport a full-frame sensor (the megapixels are unknown at this point in time), and will have the same AF system found on the Nikon D610, meaning that photographers can look forward to a 39-point AF system. It will also have settings for 1:1, 3:2, and 16:9 aspect ratios, and there is a chance that the camera might come without video recording capabilities.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google’s smart watch is "in late-stage development," and the company is in talks with suppliers to begin mass production of the device soon.
We have heard the rumors that Google could be planning a smartwatch of their own and with the company’s foray into wearable electronics with Google Glass, a smartwatch is definitely not a stretch of the imagination. Well thanks to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Google’s recent acquisition of WiMM Labs is expected to bear fruit in the coming months and we could very well see Google’s smartwatch launch in the near future. While the specs and features of Google’s smartwatch remains a mystery, it has been suggested that it will center around the Google Now service which we guess makes sense to a certain degree.
The watch will naturally pair with a smartphone, presumably via Bluetooth, hopefully Bluetooth 4.0 LE since this would allow the watch to be used for longer periods of time, versus the Samsung Galaxy Gear which currently sports a battery life of about a day. Apart from that not much else is known, including pricing or availability, but hopefully given that Google has been pretty generous with its price when it comes to their Nexus products, the company’s smartwatch will be just as competitively priced as well. In any case hopefully we will be able to find out just what Google has been up to, so check back with us at a later date for the details.

Google’s Nexus 5 handset is expected to be announced on the 5th of November at an event held in Tel-Aviv, and while we’re sure this is the Nexus 5 handset that many are looking forward to, what about the Nexus 4? Will it be discontinued? Or will it be kept around and offered at a lower price for those who might find the Nexus 5 a little out of their budget? While a lower-priced Nexus 4 remains to be seen, the ever-reliable @evleaks has revealed that at the very least, the handset will be kept around. This is according to a photo taken of a retailer’s inventory where it lists both the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 in black and white options.
Of course it is possible that the retailer might simply be listing the Nexus 4 stock they have left and that it might not mean Google will keep the handset around, but considering that the handset was recently sighted at the Bluetooth SIG with LTE connectivity on board, perhaps we should not be so quick to write the Nexus 4 off just yet. In any case a lower-priced phone would not be a stretch of the imagination. After all Apple does the same thing with older iPhone models, offering them at cheaper prices as a lower-cost alternative to the current flagship iPhone model, so perhaps Google is looking to do the same, but with the Nexus handsets being pretty affordable as it is, we have to wonder just how much cheaper can it get?

LG Close To Inking Deal With Apple For iWatch Displays, Samsung To Sit This One Out [Rumor]
Posted in: Today's ChiliWe have heard how Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, has announced that the company has plans for new product categories for 2014, and what better category than wearable electronics such as the rumor iWatch, right? Well according to a new rumor reported by The Korea Herald, they cite an “expert” who claims that LG is close to inking a deal with Apple that will allow the South Korean company to supply Apple with OLEDs that will be used in Apple’s upcoming device. According to the anonymous source, “LG Display has been in talks over flexible organic light-emitting diode panels for quite a while and it looks like it will be sealing the deal with Apple.”
At the moment both LG and Samsung are some of the suppliers that Apple uses to provide them with displays for their Mac and iOS products, but interestingly enough the rumors claim that Samsung will not be taking part in Apple’s iWatch, but rather LG and Taiwan’s RiTDisplay are said to be possible candidates. The reason is not what you might think, which is that given Apple and Samsung’s legal history, you would think that Apple is not looking to give Samsung any business. Instead it seems that Samsung is not too keen on the prospect, especially since they are trying to market their own smartwatch in the form of the Galaxy Gear. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but if the rumors are to be believed, it certainly sounds like come 2014, we will be seeing the fabled iWatch make its debut.
