HTC Might Be Thinking About A Windows Phone/Android Dual-Booting Phone

HTC Might Be Thinking About A Windows Phone/Android Dual Booting PhoneAccording to our report earlier, word has it that Microsoft is so eager to more manufacturers on board the Windows Phone bandwagon that at least as far as HTC is concerned, they are willing to either cut or eliminate the costs of the Windows Phone licensing fee to make it an attractive offer. HTC as it stands has not released a new Windows Phone handset for a while now and does not appear to have any plans to do so, but according to the folks at Android Central, their source has told them that HTC has been looking at the idea of creating a device that will dual boot both Android and Windows Phone at the same time.

HTC is said to be exploring how much a device like that could cost, but it is unclear as to whether this is merely an idea or if it has progressed to creating actual working prototypes. Of course while this idea will benefit the end user by giving them two options to choose from in a single device, we doubt either Google or Microsoft will be too thrilled about sharing a single device, Google, for example, might refuse to certify it thus blocking access to Google’s portfolio of services, and Microsoft might not enjoy piggybacking on Android either, which would be a huge marketing nightmare for them. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think of a dual-booting handset? Yay or nay?

Microsoft Eager To Cut/Eliminate Windows Phone Licensing Fees For HTC

Microsoft Eager To Cut/Eliminate Windows Phone Licensing Fees For HTCWhen it comes to Nokia phones, Nokia’s name does pop up quite a bit, although to be fair there are manufacturers such as Samsung and HTC who should be taken into account as well. So far both companies have been relatively quiet on the Windows Phone front, and now according to a report from Bloomberg, Microsoft is in discussions with HTC about putting more Windows Phone handsets out there. Unlike Android, building a Windows Phone will require the company to pay Microsoft a licensing fee to use the software, but the report claims that Microsoft is willing to cut or eliminate the licensing fee altogether to make the deal more attractive.

While HTC has yet to confirm this, one of their sources claims that the Taiwanese company has no plans to make a new Windows Phone handset at the moment, and has no plans to release anymore in the future, which might explain why Microsoft is making this deal as attractive as possible. Given HTC’s recent financial woes where they recorded an operating loss of $101 million, not to mention the Microsoft-Nokia deal that will take place, making a new Windows Phone hardly seems like a priority for HTC at the moment.

Apple Reportedly Purchased Personal Assistant App Cue

Apple Reportedly Purchased Personal Assistant App CueWith the introduction of iOS 7, Apple has revamped the notification center to make it a bit more relevant and informative, giving you not only your notifications, but telling you what you have planned for today, what the weather is, and etc., although it looks like it could get a more beefy update in the future as Apple has reportedly acquired Cue, the personal assistant app. Apple has yet to confirm this acquisition and has released a statement saying, “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”

According to the reports, Apple could have paid anywhere between $35 million to $60 million for the company and once the company had be acquired, they announced their plans to shut down their app and services. For those who have not had the pleasure of using Cue, what it does is that it scans your emails which will help you create your agenda for the day. For example if you have an email that talks about a meeting, Cue will schedule it in for you, making the process more automated. It is unclear what Apple plans to do with Cue, although like we said earlier, they could be thinking of beefing up the notification center to bring it more in line with Google Now.

Google Might Not Go With ASUS For 2014′s Nexus 7 [Rumor]

Google Might Not Go With ASUS For 2014s Nexus 7 [Rumor]As it stands, ASUS is the manufacturer responsible for creating the Google Nexus 7 tablet and if the rumors are to be believed, they could be responsible for 2013’s Nexus 10 tablet as well. Interestingly enough despite the rumors suggesting that Google dropped Samsung in favor of ASUS for the Nexus 10 this year, come 2014 and the next-gen Nexus 7, word on the street has it that Google will no longer be going with ASUS. According to a post by DigiTimes, the reason Google might drop ASUS next year is because the company has been making too many different tablets of their own, which we guess could be either seen as creating too much competition for Google’s offerings, or it could be that Google feels that ASUS might not be concentrating on their products as much.

At the same time the argument has been made that the reason ASUS is cranking out as many tablets as they have is because they could be dropped by Google next year. Then again Google has typically opened up its Nexus products to a variety of manufacturers, allowing them to bid on projects, so perhaps ASUS has had enough or Google might have found someone else who could do a better job. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully if this rumor turns out to be true, whoever takes over next year will be able to do as good a job as ASUS, if not better.

Sony Full-Frame NEX Cameras To Be Known As The A7 And A7r [Rumor]

Sony Full Frame NEX Cameras To Be Known As The A7 And A7r [Rumor]So word on the street has it that come 16th of October, there is a good chance of Sony launching their full-frame NEX cameras. We’re sure some of you guys are also curious as to what the devices could be known as. Well according to Sony Alpha Rumors, Sony has decided to stick with the Alpha moniker for all of its high-end devices, regardless whether they are E-mount or A-mount, and as it turns out, the first two full-frame NEX cameras will be known as the A7 and the A7r, with the A7 being the cheaper model, while the A7r is the high-end model.

Both cameras are expected to be identical, save for the 24MP in the cheap model, and the 36MP in the expensive one. The rest of the camera’s features include a NEX-7 grip, an EVF in the middle (similar to the Olympus OMD design), and will be around the same size as the Sony RX1. Once again Sony has yet to make anything official so do take it with a grain of salt for now, but the A7 and A7r are both models we’ll be keeping our eyes out for, so be sure to check back with us later in the month to see if there are additional updates to be had.

ASUS Nexus 10 Tablet Could Be Nearing An Announcement [Rumor]

ASUS Nexus 10 Tablet Could Be Nearing An Announcement [Rumor]It had been suggested in the past the ASUS could be responsible for the new Nexus 10 despite Google allegedly confirming that the next-gen Nexus 10 would be made by Samsung again. In any case thanks to a recent photo released by @evleaks, it has been suggested that ASUS/Google could be getting closer to launching the device. This is based on a screenshot which is allegedly from a retailer based in the UK, indicating that retailers are probably getting ready to stock the device and have it ready for sale in the near future. Unfortunately apart from that, not much else is known about the upcoming device and a specific launch date has not yet been given.

It is interesting that Google has decided to move away from Samsung as the manufacturer of the Nexus 10, especially given that Samsung has probably been one of the most active as far as churning out Android tablets are concerned, with the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition being the company’s latest offering, but perhaps Google is hoping to recreate the same success they have experienced with ASUS and the Nexus 7, which could explain why they dropped Samsung in favor of the Taiwanese company. Either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more info, so check back with us at a later date for updates!

Amazon Has Two Phones In The Works, One Has A 3D UI [Rumor]

Amazon Has Two Phones In The Works, One Has A 3D UI [Rumor]When it comes to smartphones, rumor has it that Amazon has been working on one for a while now. The company has released three generations of Kindle Fire tablets, with the latest being the new Kindle Fire HD and the Kindle Fire HDX, so to hear them working on a smartphone is not a complete surprise. In any case according to the latest rumors, Amazon has two smartphones in the works, with one of them codenamed “Smith” which comes with an interesting feature: the use of a 3D user interface. This will make use of four front-facing cameras that will be able to track a user’s head and use it to position the 3D effects within the phone which should prove to be rather interesting, but hopefully it will be more functional than novel, like the 3D phones we’ve seen in the past.

Some features of Amazon’s phones include the ability to identify objects in real-life, meaning that you will be able to point the device at an object, identify it, and be able to purchase it from Amazon’s website, presumably if they have it in stock. As for the second Amazon phone, it will be similar to the “Smith” device just minus the 3D effects. The hardware specifications of either phone remain unknown, but assuming the rumors are to be believe, it will only be in 2014 when we will find out more. So until then take it with a grain of salt.

Cheaper Sony Full-Frame NEX Camera Could Feature 24MP Sensor [Rumor]

Cheaper Sony Full Frame NEX Camera Could Feature 24MP Sensor [Rumor]We have been hearing some rumors that Sony could be planning to launch a full-frame NEX camera in the future, and not just one model, but several models. One of them is expected to be the more affordable option, while one will be a mid-ranged model, while the other will be a high-end model. According to the folks at Sony Alpha Rumors, they claim to have been tipped off to some of the specifications of the upcoming devices. Based on their information, it is expected that the cheaper full-frame NEX camera will sport a 24MP sensor, while the high-end model will go with the 36MP sensor. Like we’ve mentioned many times in the past, megapixels don’t determine a camera’s quality, but unfortunately it has been used as a marketing tool where bigger means better.

In any case this kind of corroborates an earlier rumor where it was suggested that Sony could be thinking of choosing between a 24MP, 32MP, or a 36MP sensor for their full-frame camera, but it looks like with the different models rumored, Sony could just end up using all three instead! Take it with a grain of salt for now, but with the rumors pointing at a 16th of October announcement, we guess we won’t have to wait too long to see if the rumors pan out.

iPad Mini 2 Supply Constraints Reaffirmed By New Report

iPad Mini 2 Supply Constraints Reaffirmed By New ReportApple’s iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 could be announced later this month, but if the rumors are to be believed, the iPad mini 2 could face some supply constraints meaning that even if it were to be announced this month, customers would have a hard time getting their hands on it. This is a similar issue that customers are finding with the iPhone 5s at the moment, which apparently is due to the Touch ID sensor that is giving manufacturers problems. In the case of the iPad mini 2, it is believed that the Retina display could be the problem and this was “confirmed” last week by IHS iSupply, and is corroborated with a recent report by Reuters.

According to their report, it is believed that Apple’s supply chain is only now gearing up to make the Retina displays for the upcoming tablet, meaning that if the tablet is launched, quantities will be extremely limited at the start and customers could be forced to wait weeks in order to get their hands on the device. It has been suggested in the past that Apple could be passing on putting Retina displays in the iPad mini 2 due to worries that it could eat into iPad sales, but as Frank Gillett, an analyst at Forrester, puts it, “If they don’t put in retina … there will be howls.”
