The Intel-powered mobile machine has been slowly picking up pace this year. Now, the chip-maker has signed up a new partner in the form of Russian operator MegaFon. So, it looks like we might see another (and we must say familiar looking) network-branded Android Medfield phone in the form of the MegaFon Mint. The spec-sheet, again, poses no surprises, with the same 1.6GHz Z2460 chip 1GB of RAM, 4-inch screen and 8-megapixel camera only further enhancing the sense of deja vu. What will be unique, however, is the price, which looks set at 17,990 Rubles (about $565), available from today.

Despite Russia’s size, Apple has always had to sell in the country through carriers and resellers — a pain for customers who might have to wait weeks beyond the initial launch of a device to see it in stores. If we’re to believe tips from distributor insiders speaking with Kommersant, Apple wants at least some kind of first-party presence in the country. The company has supposedly set up a majority-owned local branch, Apple Rus, to run an operation that would start direct sales as soon as 2013. As for official retail stores, we simply don’t know. Apple executives were reported as disappointed in available locations following a trip to Moscow in 2011, but there’s been no chatter since. Apple certainly hasn’t commented on the subject. We do know that iOS- and Mac-loving Russians in at least major cities will be happy if Apple establishes a more official presence, even if it still leaves us mourning the lost opportunity for an obvious Snow Leopard tie-in.

There’s been plenty of talk about Russian feminist punk collective Pussy Riot in the global media over the past few weeks, but the neon-ski-mask-donning assemblage’s music isn’t particularly easy to come by here in the States. Streaming music service Slacker is throwing some weight behind the group by adding such government-riling gems as “Putin Wet Himself” and “Kill the Sexist” to its “Protest Radio” station. The station is free and will kick off with one of four PR tracks “for some time,” according to the service. You can access the offering below, just make sure you’ve got some ear holes cut in your own ski mask before you do.

Alt-week peels back the covers on some of the more curious sci-tech stories from the last seven days.
It’s not like we’re trying to out-weird ourselves, it just, somehow, keeps happening. At least one of this week’s offerings (we’ll leave it to you to figure out which) will possibly be the creepiest thing we post all year. As for the rest, well it’s slightly more palatable. We’ll get uncharacteristically pumped about cycling, meet some extra-terrestrial quasicrystals and enjoy some art with X-men credentials. This is alt-week.

Facebook’s App Center is having its passport stamped quite a lot lately. Just days after the HTML5 app portal set foot in the UK, it’s making the leap to seven more countries. Brazil, France, Germany, Russia, Spain, Taiwan and Turkey will all get a crack at using web apps both on the desktop as well as in the Android and iOS native clients. The new group is coming onboard in the next few weeks. In the meantime, countries where English makes a frequent appearance — Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK and the US — now supply the App Center for every single user. To help speed along the virtual customs claims, Facebook is trotting out a translation tool to get developers on the right track. It shouldn’t be long before App Center is a mainstay of the entire Facebook world, even though we may end up cursing the company after hour three of a Jetpack Joyride marathon.

Being related to that considerably powerful Ascend D Quad could spark some sort of a double-edged sword effect on Huawei’s lesser-specced D1, but if all those cores the former has to offer mean nothing to those in China, the latter wouldn’t be such a bad choice. In case you’ve forgotten — unlike its beefier, quad-core-loaded brother — this 4.5-inch (1280 x 720) Ascend D1’s only sporting a dual-core, 1.5GHz TI OMAP CPU, which is paired next to 1GB of RAM and a tasty bite of Google’s 4.0 treat. According to Huawei, the device is set to hit online shelves throughout the Great Wall starting today, with Russia being its next stop come August and “other markets to follow” sometime after.
