Philips sells off its Hi-Fi and DVD business to Funai for $201 million

Philips sells off its HiFi and DVD business to Funai for $201 million

Philips has decided that there just isn’t any money in home entertainment, and as such is flogging off the remainder of its interests to Funai for $201 million. It had already sold its North American TV and DVD operations to the Japanese company back in 2008, but will now package off its whole Lifestyle Entertainment division, which includes global disc players and its Fidelio high-end audio outfit. Instead, Philips will concentrate on profitable sectors such as lighting and healthcare — so the sooner it can develop a bulb that can kill the sniffles, the better.

Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) today announced that it has signed an agreement regarding the transfer of its Lifestyle Entertainment business (Audio, Video, Multimedia and Accessories) to Funai Electric Co., Ltd (TSE/OSE 6839). Under the terms, Funai will pay a cash consideration of EUR 150 million and a brand license fee, relating to a license agreement for an initial period of five and a half years, with an optional renewal of five years. The deal for the Audio, Multimedia and Accessories businesses is expected to close in the second half of 2013. The Video business will transfer in 2017, related to existing intellectual property licensing arrangements. The gain on the transaction will be recorded at the closing date.

The transaction is subject to customary conditions, including regulatory filings and works council procedures. The Remote Control activities, which are predominantly business-to-business, are excluded.

“With this transaction we are taking another step in reshaping the Consumer Lifestyle portfolio and transforming Philips into the leading technology company in Health and Well-being,” said Philips Chief Executive Officer Frans van Houten. “I am confident that today’s agreement with Funai, our partner for over 25 years, will create a promising future for Philips Audio, Video and Entertainment, and continuity for our customers. It will leverage Philips’ strong brand, strength in innovation, and leadership position in these businesses, with Funai’s strong presence in North and Central America – and Japan, and its supply and manufacturing expertise.”

“This is truly an exciting time for us at Funai,” said Funai President and CEO, Tomonori Hayashi. “This transaction will allow us to continue moving forward and grow as a global company. We will benefit from Philips’ legendary know-how and innovation, as well as the excellent talent they have in place around the world, allowing us to work as a team to leverage and grow the Philips brand in Audio, Video and Entertainment. Additionally, this will give Funai the opportunity to meet our goal of expanding our business into markets including Brazil, Russia, India and China.”

“With this agreement and the joint venture for Philips Television, the Consumer Lifestyle sector will further focus on Health and Well-being. The portfolio, consisting of Personal Care, Health & Wellness, Domestic Appliances and Coffee, delivered high single-digit growth in 2012,” said Philips Consumer Lifestyle Chief Executive Officer Pieter Nota. “Philips has a proud heritage in Audio, Video, Multimedia and Accessories, and today’s agreement with Funai ensures that this business can continue to deliver great Philips-branded innovations to consumers around the world.”

Philips Audio, Video, Multimedia and Accessories make up the Lifestyle Entertainment business group within Philips Consumer Lifestyle. This business group is headquartered in Hong Kong and employs approximately 2,000 people worldwide.

Today’s agreement does not impact any of Funai’s existing brand licensing agreements with Philips.

Best Buy drops price on all MacBook Air models for weekend promotion

We’ve got some good news for those who have been wanting a MacBook Air but find the higher price tag a little difficult to swallow, as Best Buy has discounted all MacBook Air models in a weekend promotion. All four MacBook Air models have seen their prices cut by $200, which should make an Air purchase a little more manageable for some folks. The only thing is that this promotion requires you to make your purchasing decisions quickly, because the deals are only good through Saturday (which is tomorrow, in case you’ve lost track of time).

3T8A8129-SlashGear-580x386

Of course, with these lower price tags, there’s a chance that some models will sell out before the promotion comes to a close, in which case you’ll simply be out of luck. That $200 discount brings the 11.6-inch Airs with 64GB and 128GB of storage down to $799 and $899, respectively. Those prices aren’t too bad, but if you’re looking for a MacBook Air with a bit more to offer, the 13.3-inch model with 128GB of storage has come down to $999. Finally, the 13.3-inch model with 256GB of storage is at $1,299 during this promotion.

To make the deal sweeter, Best Buy is also offering free shipping on these MacBook Airs. Expect more than a few people to take advantage of these deals, and indeed, we’re already seeing some restrictions on the $799 11.6-inch MacBooks Airs. Though they don’t appear to be sold out yet, Best Buy is no longer offering to ship them, meaning that you’ll have to pick yours up in store if you order one.

Earlier this week, Apple delivered its financial report for its fiscal Q1 2013. Though things looked solid for the most part with Apple declaring record iPhone and iPad sales, the company’s stock has taken some hits since the report was released. Are you planning on picking up one of these MacBook Airs during Best Buy’s promotion?

Sony selling NY headquarters for $1.1 billion, will rent space from new owners

Sony selling NY HQ

Despite losing a little less each quarter since Kazuo Hirai took over as CEO, Sony still appears to be looking for ways to cut the fat. Its latest move? Sell the house. Taking a page from Nokia’s book, Sony has announced that it has agreed to sell its New York headquarters building to a consortium led by The Chetrit Group. After settling its debts on the building, the $1.1 billion sale will net Sony about $685 million in operating income, potentially giving it the extra cashflow it needs to avoid a negative Q3 earnings report. According to Reuters, the firm may be planning a similar move in Tokyo, which could score Sony another $1.14 billion to balance its budget. Check out the company’s official announcement after the break.

Steam extending holiday sale with “encore weekend”

We’re closing in on the end of the Steam holiday sale, sadly. The deals can’t last forever, but in a moment of sheer awesomeness, Valve has decided that it wants them to last just a little bit longer than originally announced. While the sale was supposed to wind down officially on January 5 (which is tomorrow, in case you haven’t noticed), Valve announced today that it will be extending the sale until Monday, January 7 at 10PM PST.

steamsaleforge

This additional weekend has been dubbed the “encore weekend.” As the name implies, there won’t be any new deals during this weekend, but rather Valve says some of the sale’s biggest deals will be available once again. “A select number of the most sought-after titles from the Steam Holiday Sale will reprise their biggest discounts for two additional days,” Valve’s announcement reads.

So, if there was a deal you were waiting for but somehow missed, you may just have your chance to snag it this weekend. Valve doesn’t talk about what kind of deals will be getting an encore this weekend, but it probably wouldn’t be too absurd to expect to see big games with deep discounts. If you’ve been trying to get titles like Skyrim, Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, or Dishonored for less than full-retail price, it seems like there’s a decent chance you’ll see deals like those this weekend.

Of course, we won’t know for sure until the encore weekend gets underway. What’s ultimately important here is that the holiday sale isn’t ending as soon as we thought, which in turn means that we’ll get to spend even more money by the time everything is said and done. On second thought, maybe this isn’t the best thing that could have happened…

Amazon slashes $50 off Kindle Fire HD 8.9 models during January, but only for students

Image

While many of us are still recovering from New Year’s celebrations, Amazon is considerably clearer-headed: it wants us ready for the winter school term that’s about to start. Appropriately, it’s offering a surprisingly steep discount on the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 for students. Americans headed back to class can get $50 off the price of the larger tablet for the whole of January, regardless of the capacity or the presence of LTE. The catch, apart from needing a .edu email address for the Amazon Student program, is the requirement for an active Prime subscription — although that’s no great shakes when Amazon accepts both the free six-month offer and the $39 yearly student plan. At $249, the discounted Kindle Fire HD is tempting for anyone who can do their course shopping at the Kindle Store… or just wants a convenient distraction during mid-terms.

Amazon offering students $50 off a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 all month long

Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD was the company’s leading product throughout the holiday shopping season, and for good reason. The 8.9-inch version went on sale earlier last month, but if you happened to blink, the deal was gone. However, Amazon is offering the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 to students at $50 off all month long.

Screen Shot 2013-01-01 at 12.22.07 PM

Amazon Student Members with an active Prime account (free six-month or $39/year plan) are only eligible for the deal. However, the company is letting students who aren’t Prime members sign up today to take advantage of the deal. In order to become an Amazon Student member, simply sign up using your .edu email address.

The offer is good towards either the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 WiFi-only model or the 4G LTE variant. The $50 discount means you’ll spend as little as $249 on a new 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD, which is the same price as the 7-inch 32GB model of the Fire HD. We have to say that’s a pretty good-looking deal for a great budget tablet.

The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 comes in four different flavors in all. The WiFi-only model comes in 16GB and 32GB sizes, while the 4G LTE version comes in either 32GB or 64GB flavors, all priced at $249, $319, $449, and $549, respectively, after applying the $50 discount. Xbox Live Countdown to 2013 sale wraps with deals on Skyrim, Oblivion [Update]

Today marks the final day of the Xbox Live Countdown to 2013 sale, and the promotion seems to be going out with a bang. Microsoft and Bethesda have dropped prices on both Skyrim and Oblivion, along with some DLC for each. Skyrim has shaved 50% off its normal Games on Demand price, coming down to $29.99, while Oblivion has dropped down 33% to just $9.99.

Skyrim_dragon

If you already have those games and are just looking for some DLC action, there are plenty of deals to take advantage of. Dawnguard is currently 800MSP (50% off), and while Hearthfire was supposed to receive the same 50% off treatment and go down to 200MSP, that hasn’t happened yet. Major Nelson tells users to check back later if they aren’t seeing discounted prices, so it sounds like Hearthfire is still in for a discount at some point today.

Sadly, there aren’t any Dragonborn discounts to partake in today, probably given the fact that it’s brand spanking new. If you’re shopping for Oblivion DLC instead of Skyrim DLC, Microsoft and Bethesda have you covered. The game’s stellar Shivering Isles expansion is being offered for 600MSP (50% off), while Knights of the Nine is also half-off to come in 200MSP.

There you have it folks – the final day of the Countdown to 2013 sale on Xbox Live. These are some pretty excellent deals to wrap-up with, but the entire promotion has been great for players looking to save. Did you pick up anything during the Countdown to 2013 promotion?

UPDATE: Hearthfire’s 50% discount has gone into effect, meaning that you can nab it from Xbox Live for 200MSP right now. Go crazy and build your dream home, folks!

Borderlands 2 prices take a dive on Xbox Live

If you’ve been holding on out Borderlands 2 and have an Xbox 360, now might be a good time to buy. As a part of Xbox Live‘s Countdown to 2013 sale, the Games on Demand price for Borderlands 2 has taken a tip, shaving 33% off to come in at $39.99. That isn’t bad for a game as recent as Borderlands 2, and you can also feel good knowing that you’re getting a Game of the Year contender on the cheap.

Borderlands2_maya

So, what if you already have Borderlands 2 but still have some cash burning a hole in your pocket? Is there anything for you? It turns out there is, as Gearbox has also knocked 25% off the price of the Borderlands 2 season pass to bring it down to 1,800 MSP. The season pass, as many of you already know, gives you access to the four planned DLC packs at a discounted rate, so you’re saving even more if you opt to buy today.

Two of these DLC packs, Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty and Mr. Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage, have already released, while a third titled Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt is coming up next month. We don’t have any details on the fourth DLC pack yet, but considering the rate at which Gearbox has been launching DLC for Borderlands 2, that’s bound to change soon. In short, you get a lot of content if you go with the Borderlands 2 season pass, so if you were planning to buy up the DLC anyway, it may not be bad idea to plop down some cash today.

Finally, for those of you who have never experienced what the Borderlands franchise has to offer, the original game is on sale through Games on Demand for $9.99 today as well. It should be noted that these deals are only good for today, as tomorrow a new set of deals will be ushered in for the next day in Microsoft‘s Countdown to 2013 promotion. Did you pick up any Borderlands-related goodies in today’s sale?

Gameloft cuts many game prices to 99 cents, wants screen time on your gift phone

Gameloft cuts many game prices to 99 cents, wants screen time on your gift phone

More than a few of us are getting phones and tablets as gifts this year, and Gameloft wants to be there the moment we’re hunting for new apps to feed our devices. Accordingly, the developer has slashed the price on many of its recent games to 99 cents during the holidays, even including better-known titles like Asphalt 7 and Dark Knight Rises. Not surprisingly, the discounting doesn’t include Modern Combat 4 and a few other releases — there have to be profit-makers left somewhere, after all — but it’s a huge break for those who want a few starter titles and aren’t concerned about always having the latest and greatest. Both Android and iOS gamers can splurge at the source links.

GOG holiday sale kicks off with deals on The Witcher 2, Torchlight

We’re often tricked into thinking that no one does gaming sales better than Valve, but GOG is showing us today that such a claim simply isn’t true. GOG has kicked off its holiday sale, with most of its catalog discounted in one way or another. It seems that not every game in GOG’s catalog is being discounted, but you’d be hard pressed to find games that aren’t included in this sale.

GOGholidaysale

Much like the Steam sales we all know and love, GOG will be featuring new deals each and every day. Some of today’s featured deals include Torchlight, Legend of Grimrock, and Inquisitor for $3.74 each. Other notable deals have The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition at $11.99, Dungeon Keeper 2 for $2.99, and Freespace 2 for $4.99. Not bad for someone looking to pick up some excellent games on the cheap.

There are deals on games for both Windows and Mac, so you should be able to find something good regardless of your platform (unless you’re playing on Linux, sadly), and the holiday sale is going to run until January 3, 2013. That’s quite a long time, and there will be plenty of rounds of daily deals between now and then. The games offered on GOG are generally inexpensive enough, but this massive deal makes being a member of GOG an even better idea.

This is just one of the massive sales we’re expecting on digital PC games, with Steam’s holiday sale rumored to be kicking off on December 20. GOG has a pretty good jump on Steam if that’s the case, but then again, GOG’s offerings are pretty unique in the realm of digital distribution. Are you going to pick anything up in the GOG holiday sale?
