Google Play’s End of Summer Sale outed by discounted apps, lets the Lorax speak for the savings

Google Play's End of Summer Sale outed by discounted app descriptions, lets the Lorax speak for the savings

It looks like a handful of select apps have outed Mountain View’s Labor day plans: Google Play’s End of Summer Sale. SwiftKey 3, The Lorax — Dr. Seuss, Square Enix’s Crystal Defenders, and other apps are now brandishing deep discounts, almost uniformly attributing the savings to the End of Summer Sale. Not every title on discount claims to be part of the unannounced event, however — Max Payne Mobile slashed its price by 67 percent without so much as a hint at the alleged festivities. Google hasn’t made the event official just yet, but we’d be willing to wager the deals will run through the holiday weekend. Check out the source link below to start making the most of your Google gift cards.

Update: Google’s made the sale official, featuring 18 discounted apps for your shopping pleasure. Check out the official list of sale items at the updated source link below, but don’t limit yourself: Max Payne Mobile and a handful of other deeply discounted games aren’t on it.

HBO and Fox cut a deal to keep the movies flowing through 2022, HBO Nordic launches soon

Just in case you only thought Amazon, Netflix and Redbox were working the studio deals, HBO announced today it’s worked out an extension of its agreement with 20th Century Fox. Already the “premium network home” of Fox flicks for more than 30 years, this deal is long enough to keep it going into the next decade. The LA Times reports from its sources the the original deal would have expired in 2015, while the extension pushes it out to 2022 at a price of over $200 million per year. One key adjustment that’s been made for the digital age gives Fox the ability to continue to sell its movies over digital stores even while they’re airing on HBO unlike the previous deal, although we’re told this provision does not extend to rentals during that time. That’s on top of a previous tweak negotiated months ago that let Fox and other HBO partners provide digital copies of their movies on services like iTunes from the Cloud and Ultraviolet during the HBO pay window. One other note is that on the same day Netflix revealed its service is coming to several Scandinavian locales, HBO announced it’s doing the same, launching HBO Nordic in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark.

Apple reportedly price matching iPhone discounts from carriers and other retailers

Apple reportedly price matching iPhone discounts from carriers and other retailers

According to a leaked screengrab hosted up at MacRumors, Apple retail shops now have the authority to price match carrier and rival retail discounts on iPhone. Specifically, the note informs employees that prices from Best Buy, “carriers,” Radio Shack and Target can be matched, with $49.01 seeming to be the savings across the board. Curiously, places like Wirefly, Amazon, Negri Electronics and even Walmart aren’t mentioned, so we wouldn’t recommend trying to work the price down based on ads seen from any of those. The note also mentions the iPhone 4 and 4S exclusively, and we’re fairly sure this sort of goodwill won’t ever been applied to iPad, Mac hardware or pretty much any other Apple kit. Of course, crazier things have happened. We’ve reached out to Apple for comment, and will update this article should it choose to reply.

Vringo buys small Nokia patent portfolio as asset sell-off continues

Vringo buys Nokia wireless patent portfolio as asset selloff continues

Nokia’s sale of the century hour continues, selling off a small intellectual property portfolio to Vringo. The little-known app maker has snapped up a bundle of 500 patents and applications from the Finnish phone maker, including 109 issued US Patents. The collection mostly concerns backbone tech, including communication management, signal transmission and cellular infrastructure. Neither company mentioned a figure, but Vringo revealed that Nokia’s getting a chunk of any future profits made. There’s PR after the break if you’re curious enough to wonder if Stephen Elop’s planning the mobile phone equivalent of a yard sale.

Judge rules against Apple in Kodak patent dispute, cites disruption to next week’s auction

Judge rules against Apple in Kodak patent dispute, dismisses ownership claims for late filing

Is this Kodak’s moment? It’s sure shaping up to be, as Bloomberg reports the once prominent imaging company has just earned a slight, though significant courtroom victory against Apple. At stake is the ownership of ten patents related to digital imaging, two of which have been deemed incontestable by a Manhattan bankruptcy judge due to Cupertino’s late stage ownership filing. Citing potential disruptions to next Wednesday’s auction, Judge Gropper ruled against Apple’s claims, while also striking down Kodak’s request for a summary judgment on the eight remaining IPs and leaving the door open for further dispute. So, though it may seem like the Rochester-based company is finally out of the woods, this certainly isn’t the end of its woes — Apple has now filed counterclaims and is seeking a transfer of the case to district court. And if the House that Steve built’s legal track record is any indication, it’s not going down without an interminable fight.

Best Buy lowers iPhone 4 price to $50 on contract

If you’ve been eying the iPhone 4 for that low price point of $99 lately for the 8GB model, we have some great news. In what we are hearing is a new, permanent price drop, Best Buy is now selling Apple’s 8GB iPhone 4 for only $49 with a new 2-year contract agreement. This goes for Verizon, AT&T, and the Now Network.

Checking over at Best Buy’s website this doesn’t appear to be a sale of any sort, and is the actual price moving forward. For those that don’t need the iPhone 4S, this is a solid price and comes just in time for those back to school shoppers. This new price comes just a few days after Apple’s Q3 earnings report earlier this week. Where they stated to have sold around 27 million iPhones this quarter, which was viewed as low numbers.

We can expect sales of the older iPhone 4 to soar a little bit with the new competitive pricing, although with all the recent rumors of the iPhone 5 (or the new iPhone) some might be waiting to see what Apple has up their sleeves. If you’re eligible for an upgrade and are ready to sign a new contract, head to Best Buy and snag the iPhone 4 8GB for just $49.99 available today.

AT&T HTC One X drops to $99 this Sunday

Reports have surfaced from multiple sources apparently confirming that HTC’s new flagship phone, the HTC One X, will be dropped to the awesome low price of just $99 from the folks at AT&T. The price drop has been officially confirmed, along with RadioShack also stating Sunday, July 29th, the price will take effect in their shops.

Some are stating the new price point from AT&T is available right this minute, with RadioShack matching it come this weekend. There is no special requirements either, as HTC and AT&T has made this the new price for the One X for those looking to update and sign a new 2-year contract as usual.

Dropping the HTC One X down to $99 makes this phone a steal, as it was already awesome at $199. This will also cause some problems for Motorola and their new Atrix HD (see our review) as it offers similar specs and a smaller screen. This could also undercut Galaxy S III sales. The HTC One X features a 4.7-inch SLCD2 display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core S4 processor, and that impressive 8 megapixel camera on the rear. Hit the timeline below for One X news and our full review. If you’re interested in a new AT&T phone the HTC One X should be near the top of your list.

Yet another Ofcom report promises UK LTE spectrum sale within five months, rollout in mid-2013

Another Ofcom report on UK LTE: spectrum sale within five months, rollout in mid2013

The long wait for LTE in the UK has already brought new levels of cynicism to a once earnest and optimistic nation, but now, finally, Ofcom has set itself a deadline for auctioning off the prized 4G spectrum to telecoms companies. In a major report published today, it declared that the sale is “set to get underway by the end of 2012” and will be “80 percent bigger” than the last spectrum-grab of this type — the £22 billion flogging of 3G back in 2000. Bidding should be completed by early 2013, so long as at least four wholesalers show interest, and then the rollout itself should begin in the middle of that blessed year. The regulator also promised that 4G mobile broadband will reach 98 percent of people in “villages, towns and cities” across the UK. Unless, of course, it gets sued by operators before the process even starts.

Steam Summer Sale begins with a bang

This year’s Steam Summer Sale starts with no less than titanic games such as Portal 2, Call of Duty MW3, and pack collections from Bethesda and the masses of creators behind the Star Wars gaming franchise. This Valve-run sale requires that you have a Steam gaming account and that you not hold your wallet closed too tightly – deals are to be had at every turn! Grab the legendary Indie Bundle (version I) for $9.99 instead of $40, get Total War: Shogun 2 for $7.49 instead of $30, and get a collection of games from RockStar for $49.99 instead of a massive $120! Click your mouse as fast as you can and stock up for the year!

This sale is a now-yearly beast of a set of deals in which a massive amount of games are put on sale for digital download for astounding amounts off their original price. There’s a collection of games in the “Pack Deals” section from the development group known as THQ, for example, that is an unbelievable 84% off its original price. Where if you’d have purchased all of the games in this set before today individually you’d have payed $399.85, you’re now paying $49.99. That’s a deal and a half by anyone’s standards.

At the very least, your one must-buy if you do not already own is Portal 2, a game that’s so much fun your head will explode. It normally costs a completely fair $19.99 and will today cost you $4.99, less than a mixed drink at your favorite club you never go to. And you’ll never leave the house again if Steam has anything to say about it!

There’s also a portal through which you’ll be voting on games that will or will not go on sale. Do you want Batman: Arkham City to be on sale for 60% off, or do you want some other game that’s a little bit less well known to go on sale? I think you know the answer to that one!

This is the first day of the giant multi-day sale in which prices change constantly, so get out there to Steam’s online shop and make it happen immediately!
