GameStop: Nintendo Wii U Sales ‘Disappointing’

GameStop: Nintendo Wii U Sales DisappointingThe sales of the Nintendo Wii U have been a topic of interest for many gamers as it’s obvious the company is having some trouble getting people to pick up its “next-gen” console. With only 64,000 units sold last month, it’ll only be just a few short weeks until we hear how terribly it did in March, but GameStop’s President Tony Bartel gave us a glimpse into how exactly the console is doing in its stores.

During GameStop’s earnings call yesterday, Bartel said the Wii U had a stronger-than-expected launch as the console initially sold out across its stores. Its after-holiday sales seem to be the problem as Bartel says they’ve been “disappointing” over the last few months, but GameStop still won’t give up on the console as Bartel believes he has the reason why the Wii U has been having issues with its sales: (more…)

Nintendo Wii U Sales Only Reach 64,000 In February

Nintendo Wii U Sales Only Reach 64,000 In February

It was just a few days ago when video game industry analyst Michael Pachter said he believed Nintendo only sold 80,000 Wii U consoles in February. Considering Pachter made some outrageous claims recently in regards to the next Xbox outselling the PlayStation 4 and Wii U this holiday season before we’ve even seen the console, it was expected by many Pachter may not know exactly what he’s talking about. Fortunately for Nintendo, he was wrong with his prediction. Unfortunately for Nintendo, it was far less than 80,000.

According to the latest NPD numbers, Nintendo only sold 64,000 units in February, which to their defense is a shorter month than others. But still, 64,000 units sold in a month is still pretty bad as neither the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 sold such a few amount of consoles in their history. (more…)

Wii U January Sales Predicted At Nearly 55,000 Units

Wii U January Sales Predicted At Nearly 55,000 Units

During the Nintendo Wii U’s launch week in the U.S., Nintendo announced it sold 400,000 units of its next-generation console, but it looks like in post-holiday sales it hasn’t been keeping up with its launch-week momentum as a new report is showing the Wii U isn’t selling so great these days.

This past January, the Wii U only sold only 57,000 units in the U.S. Those sales numbers aren’t coming from Nintendo, as we’re sure they’d be embarrassed to report that number, instead, they’re coming from an unnamed source who is said to have access to numbers from the NPD Group. Just to compare, the Wii sold 435,000 units in its first post-holiday month. (more…)

Google Play hits 25 billion app downloads, holds celebratory yard sale with $0.25 games

Google Play hits 25 billion app downloads, offers select 25-cent titles this week

Google Play crossed a rather significant milestone this morning: something to the tune of 25 billion app downloads. While the accomplishment is weighty enough on its own — especially given that the store also offers books, music and movies, which aren’t included in this tally — Google is celebrating in symbolic style with a number of apps and games for sale at just $0.25 over the next five days. Among the mix of discounted titles, you’ll find publishers such as Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio, Runtastic and Full Fat. Not to stop there, shoppers will also discover a curated collection of 25 must-own movies, 25 banned books, 25 albums that changed the world and 25 top-selling magazines.

With today’s announcement, it was revealed that 675,000 apps and games now live in Google Play — a healthy increase when compared to 600,000 titles and 20 billion installs just three months ago. As you might expect, Apple still claims the largest selection with 700,000 titles in its App Store, although with such a thin separation between the two, we may see Google Play eclipse its rival in short order.

Nokia: 7 million Lumia phones sold to date in 54 countries, 4 million in the last quarter

Nokia: 7 million Lumias sold to date in 54 countries, 4 million in the last quarter

Fresh on the heels of the much-anticipated Lumia 920 announcement, some new figures have come to light regarding its predecessors’ success. According to the Finnish phone-maker, a total of 7-million Windows Phone / Lumia devices have shipped to date. The firm was also keen to point out that this number comes from 54 markets in total — some 130 different operators. While this might seem modest, especially with only 600,000 of those sales being in the US, 4-million of those Lumia devices were sold in Q2, roughly double that of the preceding two quarters, so things are on the up. Now it just remains to see what impact any new Windows Phone 8 phones will have.
