Apple iPhone Q1 sales tipped as largest ever – by far

Verizon Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo spoke up after the group’s financial report this week with sales numbers for the iPhone that, if the group’s percentages hold true, tip off Apple having their most successful sales for the iPhone ever. These numbers add up starting with Verizon’s note that they sold 6.2 million iPhones this past quarter. If you take what we know about Verizon’s quarter before the one we’re seeing now, you’ll see they sold 3.1 million iPhones, that including only the first 10 days of sales for the iPhone 5 along with the other models Verizon carried at the time – from there you’ll begin to see the massive jump.

The following comparison you’ll have to take with a bit of salt water because it’s certainly not perfect, but it can be used as a general guide for what we’re about to see from Apple. If you take Apple’s previous sales quarter announcement (which again, doesn’t line up perfectly with Verizon’s month-to-month quarter), you’ll find that Apple sold a total of 26.9 million iPhones. That includes 9 days of iPhone 5 sales while, again, Verizon’s includes 10 days of sales (so the quarters are pretty close, anyway.)

The amount of iPhones sold by Verizon compared to Apple’s total altogether shows that Verizon was responsible for 11.52% of all iPhone sales. If this number holds true through the quarter that’s being reported by Verizon today, Apple is about to report a quarter where they’ve sold one entirely massive amount of iPhones. Keeping in mind this number is entirely based on the percentage of iPhones Verizon sold compared to Apple’s total in the past, Apple may well be announcing a financial quarter in which they’ve sold 56 million iPhones total.

That’s a massive amount of iPhones, needless to say, and it’s well above projections no matter where you’re looking for early guesses. According to the SF Chronicle and analyst Brian White, this projection isn’t just a guess – they’ve got the Wall Street analysis showing 48 million units sold, too. Take that with some salt, of course, but stick around this week to see what Apple’s numbers are this week and come back to see how accurate these numbers were. It could be big, massive, gigantic!

LG Optimus G sales hit 1 million worldwide

LG Optimus G sales hit 1 million worldwide

LG proved with the Optimus G that it can produce a smartphone that stacks up with the best of ’em, and according to the company’s newly released sales figures, consumers are starting to take notice. As it stands, more than 1 million Optimus G’s have been sold since the handset’s September debut. While the figure pales in comparison to heavyweights like the Galaxy S III and iPhone 5, that’s not too shabby for a phone that’s only been available in North America since November. Given the similarities between the Optimus G and the Nexus 4, we’re quite curious to know how sales of the two smartphones compare, but Google’s currently keeping those numbers close to its chest. That said, there’s little doubt that LG currently has its hands full at the production line.

Kobo touts ‘millions’ of sales in 2012

Kobo’s starting its post-CES 2013 (the year doesn’t really start until after the Consumer Electronic Show, right?) with a little bit of sales-inspired back patting. Apparently the company managed to bring 4 million folks on-board to its e-reading ways over the past six months, bumping up its registered user number to 12 million. Kobo’s also calling last month its largest yet, thanks in no small part to the release of a number of new devices, including the Mini, Glo and Arc. All of offer up a reminder that, while the company doesn’t have much of a foothold here in the States, it’s pushing for a much larger presence in places like its home country of Canada and Japan, where its owner Rakuten is a retail powerhouse.

Gartner: PC sales continue to slide as tablets eat their lunch

Gartner PC sales continue slide, tablets to blame

PC shipments are still heading the wrong way down the gadget freeway, according to Gartner, who thinks that we’re now consuming media mostly on tablets and just flitting over to the PC for grunt work. The survey outfit theorized that a single shared computer can often suffice for a family, with individuals getting their own tablet instead of a laptop or desktop for personal stuff — especially with compelling, inexpensive new entries like the Nexus 7. Gift-givers were less inclined to wrap up PCs this Christmas, and Windows 8 didn’t give them much of a boost either, according to the figures. The only companies with anything to celebrate during the period were Lenovo and Asus, who experienced 8.2 and 6.4 percent boosts respectively, reflecting another trend that competitors like HP and Dell will want to nip in the bud — and fast.

Samsung Galaxy S series: over 100 million served

Samsung Galaxy S series over 100 million served

The Galaxy S III’s 30 million sales landmark? Impressive, but still just part of a larger equation — according to Samsung, its entire line of Galaxy S phones has now sold over 100 million units collectively. According to the firm’s Flickr page, the line of popular smartphones passed the nine-digit mark two years and 7 months after the original Galaxy S hit the market. Since then, the Galaxy S II has sold over 40 million units, doubling its sales since February. New iterations old hardware and up and comers like the Galaxy S III mini contribute to the big number too, but Sammy puts the focus on old number three, citing 190,000 as the Galaxy S III’s average daily sales. So, that’s what it takes to sell 500 phones a minute.

Video Game Retail Sales Down 22 Percent From 2011

Video Game Retail Sales Down 22 Percent From 2011

Even though specific video games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Halo 4 have enjoyed some record-breaking releases, it looks as though the video game retail industry as isn’t doing so great these days.

The latest data from the NPD Group shows both video game hardware, software and accessory sales in the U.S. totaled $3.2 billion at retail alone, which is a 22 percent decline from last year’s $4.1 billion in sales. The data tracks only brick-and-mortar shops and not digital sales, such as Steam or the various digital marketplaces each console has.

“In December 2012, positive trending for many annualized franchises like Call of Duty, Skylanders, Assassin’s Creed, and FIFA, point to consumers’ increased spending on hits but that middle-tier games as well as catalog titles are suffering,” said NPD Analyst Liam Callahan. “This is evident in examining the share of December dollar sales that the top 10 titles generated, which was 46 percent in December 2012, up 12 percentage points from last December.”

I’ve never been a fan of purchasing games from retail stores as I tend to spend my gaming dollars at online retailers like Amazon and Newegg. What fuels my game buying are deals as I continually have a backlog of games that never seems to end, so I can certainly wait for new games to go down in price before I purchase them. I’m not sure if I’m unique in my handling of game purchases, but I’m sure there are those of you out there who do the same thing, which could be why retailers are seeing less sales.

HP, Lenovo in tight battle over PC sales in Q4 2012

HP may still have the lead when it comes to global PC sales, but Lenovo is right behind in a very tight second. Research firm IDC reported that HP maintained its worldwide PC lead in the fourth quarter of 2012 despite a slight decline in sales. Shipments for the company went down by 0.6% from the same time last year, while Lenovo’s grew by 8.2%.

20130101_133546-580x437

However, while the growth of Lenovo seems significant, outpacing everyone else in the PC industry, it still wasn’t a good as the growth the company had earlier in 2012. Q3 saw Lenovo’s shipment growth up a whopping 30%. According to IDC, that didn’t give Lenovo quite enough momentum to pass HP, which held a slim third quarter lead, holding 15.9% of the PC market, while Lenovo held 15.7%.

However, if Lenovo keeps up the effort, they could easily see themselves blasting past HP before long. It seems many are questioning HP’s commitment to the PC business in the first place. After deciding to stay in the PC business after announcing that they would possibly sell it off, many potential customers remained skeptical.

Finishing out the top five PC makers on the list, according to IDC, include third-place Dell, whose shipments declined by 20.8% in the fourth quarter compared to a year earlier, Acer, whose PC shipments declined by 28.2% in the fourth quarter, and ASUS, whose shipments grew by 5.6%, making them the only company besides Lenovo to see a gain in sales.

Nintendo Wii U sales trump Wii sales, 460,000 units sold in December

In 41 days since its launch, the Nintendo Wii U managed to beat the Wii in sales by about $30 million. December saw Wii U sales numbers over 460,000, with a total of almost 890,000 units selling since its launch. This information comes from the NPD Group, with its report covering the time period from November 25 to December 29.

Thus far, Nintendo has raked in about $300 million from U.S. sales of the Wii U, compared to the $270 million or so it made with the Wii when it was at this stage in its life cycle. Overall, December proved to be a good month for the company, with it selling over 2.65 million hardware units total, as well as achieving some other notable milestones, including selling more than 580,000 copies total of New Super Mario Bros. U.

Likewise, the Wii console sold just under 475,000 units, bringing the all-time sales number up to 40.8 million. Following on its heels, Just Dance 3 earned the honor of being the tenth Wii game to sell over 5 million copies. The DS sold almost half a million units for an all-time total of 53 million sold, while the 3DS sold 1.25 million units for a lifetime total of 7.7 million.

Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing Scott Moffitt offered this statement. “While the Wii launch established new benchmarks in the United States, Wii U has surpassed its predecessor in perhaps the most important category: revenue generation. The demand for the Deluxe SKU, which was essentially sold out at retail this holiday, and the strong attach rate of New Super Mario Bros. U, shows that we have the value and the games to drive momentum in 2013.”

IDC report claims consoles will remain top in gaming through 2014 and beyond

A report from the International Data Corporation claims that consoles will remain at the top of the totem pole in the world of gaming for the foreseeable future. Of those gaming consoles, the Xbox 360 is the best selling device, according to the NPD Group. For now, tablets, smart TVs, and set-top boxes are not a threat to consoles in the grand scheme of things.

Likewise, the IDC report says that discs will be the main source of gaming revenue for quite some time despite the rough last two years developers and publishers have had. Game disc sales are expected to stabilize next year and then rise in 2014. This isn’t to say that discs’ digital counterparts aren’t having an effect, with the report stating that disc sales are expected to decline by 3-percent annually through 2016.

IDC’s Research Manager Lewis Ward offered this statement. “It doesn’t appear that alternative platforms – set-top boxes from cable companies, Web-connected smart TVs, and so on – are positioned to materially disrupt the trajectory of the ‘big 3′ console OEMs in 2013 or 2014. Discs will remain the console game revenue mainstay for years to come.”

As far as the Xbox 360 goes, Microsoft states that its console held 7 out of 10 top bestselling games, including Black Ops 2, Assassin’s Creed III, Halo 4, and Far Cry 3. Microsoft sold 1.4 million consoles last month, making its 24th straight top-spot month in a row. The company has stated it expects the Xbox 360 to hold strong through this year.

Nokia says Lumia smartphones did 'better than expected' last quarter 44 million units sold

In the process of drawing up its quarterly results, Nokia has uncovered some good news to report. The manufacturer says its Lumia portfolio “delivered better than expected results” in Q4, selling 4.4 million units compared to just 2.9 million in Q3. The Asha series also did well, with 9.3 million units shifted. In the same breath, however, the company’s accountants warn that Q1 of this year may not be so glowing, due to “seasonality and the competitive environment.” All financial results are preliminary at this point — we’ll learn more more when the final report arrives in a couple of weeks.
