BlackBerry Z10 prices slashed across the board: $99 at Verizon and AT&T, $49 on Amazon

Looking for an excuse to try out BlackBerry’s latest flagship? Here’s one: now it’s cheap. Folks willing to sign up for a usual two year agreement can score the BlackBerry Z10 for $99 at both AT&T and Verizon or a mere $49 at Amazon. The price drop is most likely designed to spur sales in the wake of the Canadian company’s $84 million loss last quarter. “Now is the right time to adjust the price,” a BlackBerry spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal. “It’s part of life cycle management to tier the pricing for current devices to make room for the next ones.” In other words, BlackBerry needs to move its existing stock before it can sell the public on a second-generation device. Either way, the Z10 is a steal at $49 — unless you’re in one of the regions that’s simply giving them away.

Pebble says a million apps have been downloaded, updates status of outstanding Kickstarter orders

Pebble one million apps downloaded so far, all Kickstarter orders to be shipped by weeks end

To say that Pebble’s Kickstarter-launched smartwatch has been more popular than it expected would be a slight understatement. In fact, the company touched base with us today to let us know exactly how much demand there’s been for the wearable, how it’s going to fulfill that demand and what it’s doing to help developers. For a small startup, Pebble’s taken a huge amount of orders for its $150 device. Along with the initial 85,000 Kickstarter pledges, the company told us today that it’s had over 190,000 pre-orders to date. On top of that, over a million Pebble “watchapps” have been downloaded from Pebble and its developers. Naturally, all that success has created some issues — to see what the company’s planning on doing about it, head after the break.

Dell mulls entry into wearable tech, says tablet sales aren’t so hot

Dell XPS 10

Wearable technology is all the rage these days, and Dell isn’t immune to the peer pressure: its global VP of personal computing, Sam Burd, tells the Guardian that his company is “exploring ideas” in the field. While it’s not clear just how serious plans would be at this stage, Burd notes that the idea of a Dell smartwatch is alluring. He can’t champion his firm’s tablet sales, however. Dell has reportedly sold just “hundreds of thousands” of Windows 8 and RT slates like the Latitude 10 and XPS 10. The executive predicts a sales boost as corporate customers adapt to Windows’ new interface, but he’s cautious — he believes that the young platform has to grow before clients (and rivals) take notice.

Samsung sells 20 million Galaxy S 4 handsets, according to Korean media

Samsung sells 20 million Galaxy S 4 handsets, according to Korean media

So, JK Shin hasn’t emerged from Samsung’s HQ declaring that his company has sold 20 million Galaxy S 4s, but the day (and week) is still young. Korea’s news media is quoting the CEO as saying that Samsung’s flagship Jay-Z player / handset has seen its sales double from the 10 million that was announced at the tail-end of May. Given that we’re but a few days away from the company’s next earnings estimates, we’ll probably find out for certain soon enough.

Former Nokia head of sales takes his expertise to Huawei (updated)

Former Nokia head of sales takes his expertise to Huawei updated

The last time we caught up with news of Colin Giles was a year ago, right after some particularly downbeat Nokia financials, when he left the Finnish manufacturer to spend more time with his family. Now, having clocked up sufficient mileage in his station wagon, he’s accepted a major role at Huawei as an executive VP responsible for consumer sales and marketing. He brings with him 20 years’ experience of growing Nokia’s market share in Asia and beyond, including a 12-month stint within its Leadership Team, all of which will now be put to work undoing itself and potentially adding to a sense of encroachment.

Update: We’ve added the press release after the break.

BlackBerry shipped just 2.7 million BB 10 handsets last quarter (updated)

Blackberry shipped just 27 million BB 10 handsets last quarter updated

BlackBerry got off to a roaring start with with the Z10, which shipped a million devices in its first three weeks on the market and led many to predict there’d be at least 3 million shipped this quarter (the first full quarter of Z10 availability). That turned out not to be the case, as the company said during an earnings call for Q1 2014 that it managed to get just 2.7 million BlackBerry 10 OS handsets out the door, despite the Q10 having joined the Z10 on shelves for a good part of that period. Those figures make up just 40 percent of its handset numbers, meaning most of the 6.8 million phones it shipped consisted of cheaper last-gen products. They refused to break those numbers down between the Q10 and Z10, so that’s all we have to go on at this point — but taken with its announcement of an $84 million loss, it’s far from encouraging.

Update: Apologies, folks. Our original headline said 2.7 million were sold, whereas in fact the figure indicates shipping numbers. The post itself is unchanged and accurate. For reference, BlackBerry’s actual sales to end users lagged behind shipments by around 30 percent when they revealed the previous set of figures back in March.

AT&T cuts smartphone prices in half, jumps on the discount bandwagon

AT&T cuts smartphone prices in half, jumps on the discount bandwagon

If you’re looking for a new smartphone, this is apparently the weekend to go shopping. Following Radio Shack’s promise to chip in a $100 Google Play credit with purchase an HTC One and Walmart’s deep iPhone discounts, AT&T has quietly tacked on a 50% discount for phones under $199. This puts devices like the HTC One, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 (and the S4 Active), the Note II, both of BlackBerry’s latest handsets and iPhone 5 at an enticing $100. Naturally, Ma Bell has attached the usual hooks: the deal necessitates a new 2-year agreement or contract renewal, and in-store purchases require a trade-in device to activate the discount. Not a bad deal if you’re hankering for new hardware — just make sure you don’t walk away with buyer’s remorse.
