Samsung’s Ativ Tab Windows RT tablet will not be available in the US

Samsung‘s Windows RT Ativ Tab tablet will not be available in the US, Samsung’s Mike Abary told the folks over at CNET. The reason? Samsung’s retail partners reportedly indicated that demand for Windows RT tablets is low, and that the burden of educating consumers on Windows RT is too high. As a result, the Korean company has decided that it “ought to wait.”

Mike Abary, Senior Vice President of Samsung’s U.S. PC and tablet business, offered his statement during CES. In addition to the above issues, he also is quoted as having said that Windows RT products necessitate hardware tradeoffs in order to keep the price point low enough to attract buyers, and that such moves are not something the company is fond of. No information was given on what Samsung has planned for the tablet.

“There wasn’t really a very clear positioning of what Windows RT meant in the marketplace, what it stood for relative to Windows 8, that was being done in an effective manner to the consumer … The investments necessary to educate the consumer on the difference between RT and Windows 8, plus the modest feedback that we got regarding how successful could this be at retail from our retail partners, we decided maybe we ought to wait.”

If the market shifts and demand for such products grow, Samsung will reevaluate its decision to withhold the product. This is another blow to Microsoft’s Windows RT operating system, which has failed to attract the attention of consumers. Among other things, many buyers are confused about the differences between Windows 8 and Windows RT.

Samsung ATIV S delayed once again

Back during IFA 2012, Samsung revealed its very first Windows Phone 8 device, the ATIV S. The handset will have the familiar Samsung design that you already know and love, but will come running with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 operating system. However, it looks like the the device has been delayed yet again, with a possible new release date of January 2013.

SamMobile is reporting that Samsung will start shipping the ATIV S during week 52 of 2012, which is the last week of the year. This means that a majority of shipments, as well as stock in carrier stores, probably won’t be available until January hits.

The reason for the delay? While Samsung hasn’t officially said why the new device is being delayed, it’s guessed that it’s because the company can’t get a hold of enough displays for the ATIV S. It uses the same display as the company’s Galaxy S III, which is selling incredibly well right now, and because of that, there’s a shortage of screens.

The ATIV S will have a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD display, the same one that Galaxy S III users have been enjoying throughout 2012 already. The Galaxy S III has sold over 30 million units, so we’re not too surprised that Samsung is struggling to keep up with demand, and it makes sense that they would delay the ATIV S until they know that they can produce more displays without a problem.

AT&T’s Samsung ATIV Smart PC drops November 9 for $800

AT&T has priced up Samsung’s ATIV Smart PC running Windows 8, and the docking tablet doesn’t come cheap: $799.99. The 11.6-inch tablet will come with 64GB of internal storage and a dual-core 1.5GHz Intel Atom processor when it drops on November 9, and run Windows 8 as standard with the option of a Windows 8 Pro upgrade. Buyers will be able to add the tablet to a Mobile Share plan, or take out a specific data plan for the slate.

There’s also a microSD card slot – good for up to another 32GB – and a special digital pen that, like the S Pen on the Galaxy Note 10.1, can be used for more accurate note-taking and sketching. Connectivity includes WiFi and Bluetooth, but from AT&T’s perspective it’s the 4G that’s most important.

Your $799.99 doesn’t also demand a two-year agreement, which is a boon, though you will of course need a smartphone first in order to sign up to an AT&T Mobile Share plan. However, nor does it include the docking keyboard Samsung showed off alongside the slate.

$800 strikes us as a lot for a tablet, and we’ve a suspicion that many would-be users will think the same. Microsoft is also yet to price up the Surface Pro, its full Windows 8 version of the Surface, and though the RT version is competitive with the iPad, the Pro iteration is likely to be considerably more. Even Samsung priced the WiFi-only model at $749 including keyboard dock when it announced it back in August.

AT&T will also offer the ATIV’s Stand Dock, which charges the tablet, and adds USB and ethernet connectivity, for $49, along with the VGA Adapter, for $40; each will go on sale in late November. There’s more on the ATIV Smart PC back in our hands-on from IFA.

Samsung ATIV S Windows Phone 8 hands-on

Today the folks from Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone 8 in all its glory here live in San Fransisco. Along with many announcements and improvements we were able to grab a quick hands-on with what appears to be one of the best Windows Phone 8 phones coming soon. That being the impressive 4.8-inch Samsung ATIV S. This isn’t quite a Galaxy S III caliber smartphone, but it’s as close as you’ll get with Windows Phone 8 so lets take a look.

For those that missed the original details on the ATIV S that leaked back in August, Samsung’s built an impressive smartphone running Windows Phone 8 — and has equipped it with some top tier specs. The screen is bigger than the new Lumia 920, as well as the Windows Phone 8X by HTC “signature handset” of WP8. Here’s the full rundown on this sleek all aluminum smartphone.

The Samsung ATIV S comes with a bright and crisp 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display, and is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor by Qualcomm. You’ll get 1GB of RAM (vs 2GB on the Galaxy S III) 16 or 32GB of storage based on carriers, an 8 megapixel rear camera, and 1.3 front shooter for Skype video chat. Under the hood Samsung’s equipped this 4.8-inch beast with a large 2,300 mAh hour battery (compared to the HTC 8X’s 1,800) and it will rock the usual 4G LTE radios where available, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, and more.

The Samsung ATIV S will be available in one color, that being the gorgeous and durable brushed aluminum silver shown here, and is protected with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2 on the front face. The brand new Samsing ATIV S takes some subtle hints from the Galaxy S III, right down to the menu and back buttons neatly placed around the physical home (or start in this case) button in the middle. The entire device is actually just barely bigger than the HTC 8X in size, a little thinner, and comes with a much larger 4.8-inch display. Feel free to check out our in-depth Windows Phone 8 Review. Until we hear more on the Samsung ATIV S enjoy a few quick photo’s and Windows Phone 8X by HTC comparison pictures below.

AT&T has Windows-powered tablets in its pipeline

AT&T has announced that they will be making available a couple of Windows-powered tablets in due time – most probably before the year is over, of course, to jive with the timing of the Windows 8 operating system’s release. Well, just what are the two models that has captured the attention of AT&T that they would want to have these tablets being made available on its network? They are the Asus VivoTab RT and the Samsung ATIV Smart PC which were specially designed for the Windows 8 platform, and to make matters even more exclusive, AT&T is the only U.S. carrier to offer these new tablets from Asus and Samsung to their customers.

The Asus VivoTab RT is touted to be the first quad-core Windows RT 4G LTE tablet in the market when it is released, and while it packs quite the serious processing punch, that has not affected its functionality in any way despite being crammed into an ultra-thin and light tablet form factor that boasts of a 10.1” multi-touch Super IPS display with ASUS TruVivid technology, 32GB of internal memory, NVIDIA’s next-generation quad-core Tegra 3 TE processor alongside productivity tools such as Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 RT Preview Edition.

As for the Samsung ATIV Smart PC, this tablet model targets those who want choices, especially if you are a customer who wants a careful mix of PC capability in the convenience of a tablet form factor. There is a detachable keyboard-docking system available for users to switch between a clamshell notebook PC and a tablet PC in a snap. Other hardware configurations include an 11.6” HD PLS display, the Intel Clover Trail 1.5GHz dual core processor and 64GB of internal memory.

If you are looking for a new tablet for yourself this holiday season, then you might want to consider one or the other. After all, what better way to keep yourself occupied this holiday than with a spanking new tablet and a mobile operating system platform to be reckoned with? The thing is, we are still kept in the dark regarding pricing and availability details, so stay tuned as the situation develops in due time.

Samsung ATIV SmartPC for AT&T handson

We knew we were going to get to spy some sleek new devices from AT&T today, but the company sprung a bit of a surprise on us at the last moment by announcing that it would also have a few Windows 8 tabs on hand running on its “blazingly fast” LTE network. The Samsung ATIV SmartPC, which has also gone under the name Series 5 Slate in a few other circles. The 1.5GHz Clover Trail chip inside hummed along in our brief hands on, chewing through the gorgeous don’t-call-it-metro UI with relative ease and loading a few apps and webpages with nary a pause. With 64GB of storage on board there should be plenty of room for basic productivity apps and a view movies. Though, if you’re a serious MP3 hoarder, we wouldn’t expect to carry your whole music collection with you.

Samsung IFA 2012 Wrap-Up

We had a busy day at IFA 2012, thanks in no small part to Samsung, which had a ton of announcements for its Unpacked presentation. In the weeks leading up to IFA 2012, we had a feeling that Samsung would reveal the Galaxy Note II, the follow-up to the successful Galaxy Note. Sure enough Samsung made the Galaxy Note II official during Unpacked, just as we were suspecting.

We, of course, have a hands-on with Samsung’s latest phablet for you to check out, but the Galaxy Note II wasn’t the only device that got a reveal at IFA 2012 today. The Samsung Galaxy Camera was revealed as well, and we spent some quality time with it shortly afterward. Samsung also further detailed a pair of new Windows 8 slates – the Series 7 and Series 5 – alongside the Series 5 ULTRA refreshed, a new touch laptop running Windows 8.

As the day went on, the Galaxy Note II got even more attention, as Samsung saying that the new device will be hitting the United States later on in the year. We also compared the Galaxy Note II to the original Galaxy Note, and then we compared it to a more traditional 10.1-inch tablet (in this case, it’s the Note 10.1). How does the Galaxy Note II stack up? You’ll just have to check out those stories to find out.

The ATIV S Windows Phone 8 got a reveal today, as did a pair of Samsung Windows tablets – the ATIV Smart PC Pro and the ATIV Tab, which runs Windows RT. Intrigued by a Samsung Windows 8 tablet? You’re in luck, because it just so happens that we have a hands-on with the ATIV Smart PC Pro and a hands-on with the ATIV Tab. Qualcomm announced that its S4 processors will be powering both the ATIV S and the ATIV Tab, while Samsung promised that Jelly Bean will soon be coming to the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note 10.1.

Finally, Samsung did indeed talk about its loss to Apple in the high-profile patent case that wrapped up last week. We’ll have plenty more news from IFA 2012 in the coming days, so keep it right here at SlashGear for all you need to know!
