Today we’re at the big event: Samsung’s own New York unveiling of what we must assume will be none other than the Samsung Galaxy S4! This device has been long awaited – right around one year, if you’ve been waiting since the third-generation device – and is sure to bring a wallop of a game-changer to the smartphone environment. This event starts at 7PM EST sharp – don’t be late – stay tuned to SlashGear for the whole show!
What you’ll see below is a collection of tips and suggestions for what could be the device we’re going to see in the next couple of hours. If predictions are right, this device will take on a look that’s not all that different from the Samsung Galaxy S III, complete with the nature-themed aesthetics and Android-packing software finesse. This smartphone is set to become the new leader for the manufacturer as well.
The Samsung Galaxy S III lead the pack for Samsung last year with the introduction of the hardware theme that’s run strong through the Samsung Galaxy Note device ecosystem ever since. This collection of moves includes a lovely set of smooth angles and colors from white to blue, black, and sometimes red or brown. While the future may hold non-Android software for Samsung – the distant future- we can be sure that we’ll be sticking with Google’s own mobile OS this week as well.
Have a peek at the timeline below to see recent chatter from the technology and gadget universe surrounding the Galaxy S4 and what it could contain. Meanwhile have a peek at the main news feed here on SlashGear for more information as it appears throughout the night – we’re ready to rock and roll!
Tomorrow we’ll be seeing the first appearance of the biggest smartphone release from Samsung of the year – the Galaxy S4, their newest hero phone and leader of the pack when it comes to style for the upcoming 12 months. Here before the official unveiling of the device [7PM EST tomorrow, March 14th – join us live!], Samsung has been fairly good with keeping the full final build under wraps. There are some bits and pieces, however, that will almost certainly be appearing in this next-generation smartphone – certain features will be showing up with the Samsung Galaxy S4 that we can list even before the company itself makes the final official blast.
1. Size
With the rise in size of the Samsung lineup of devices and the success of the Samsung Galaxy Note device collection across the board, the Samsung smartphone in general will continue to remain large. If what we’ve seen from Samsung thus far is true – especially in the teaser you’re seeing here, the Samsung Galaxy S4 will either be rising to 4.9 inches across its display, or it’ll remain the size it is right this minute in the Galaxy S III.
2. Operating System
The Samsung Galaxy S4 will run Android. That’s a given. If Samsung decides to push their own TouchWiz user interface as a full-fledged operating system some time in the future, we can still rest assured that it wont be happening this week. Android will be running on the Galaxy S4 in a Jelly Bean iteration 4.2 or higher and a newly feature-packed version of Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface will be running on top.
3. Connectivity
As it has been with each past release of the Galaxy S series and more recently with the Note series, each of the major carriers here in the United States will be rolling out with the Galaxy S4 right out of the gate. While we’re not sure that the release date will be the same for each of the top 4 carriers in the USA, we can be really confident that we’ll see 4G LTE as well as HSPA+ for everyone – both inside and out of North America.
4. Style
The Samsung “nature-themed” hardware trend will continue with the Galaxy S4. This was foretold by the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, a device the company wouldn’t style as such with a release of a family device so close and in-hand. If you’ll have a peek at the Galaxy Note 8.0 hands-on video, you’ll find that the Galaxy Note III, though it was released several months earlier, also has a similar style, and the Galaxy Note 10.1 – recently released in a 4G LTE iteration on Verizon.
5. Cost and Availability
With the releases of each of the Galaxy S and Note devices following a relatively predictable path along contract-included sales here in the USA, we can expect the Galaxy S4 to either cost $199.99 starting or $249.99 starting, depending on what size storage is smallest for the device. We’ll likely see the 16, 32, 64GB internal storage trend continue also, along with the Galaxy S III’s ability to hold up to 64GB microSD cards for more storage than you could possibly, reasonably, fill.
Join us tomorrow and SOON for the full run-down
We’ll be rolling out LIVE tomorrow for the big event in New York City and will have a full review of the Galaxy S4 as soon as sensibly possible. We’ll quite likely have up close and personal looks of the device for you tomorrow as well – so stick around the Samsung Galaxy S4 tag portal for more all across the next 24 hours and beyond!
As Samsung gains a whirlwind of attention this week before its big Samsung Galaxy S4 event on the 14th, (one week from today), both the S4 and the Note III have been given some rather impressive unofficial specification sets. The details we’re about to compare are not official and have not been confirmed by Samsung in any way. On the other hand, you can count on most or all of them due to the relatively predictable incremental steps every technology company takes when releasing products in a highly popular brand line.
So you’re planning on deciding between the Samsung Galaxy S IV (or S4, whichever you prefer) and the Samsung Galaxy Note III, yes? They’re going to be exceedingly similar when it comes down to it, their display size and abilities with or without the Samsung S-Pen notwithstanding. So here’s what we’ve got – and remember, all of this is based on tips, leaks, and rumors galore. The details for each of the specifications listed are either listed in the timeline at the end of this post or are brought up with educated guesses on the part of your friends at SlashGear.
Display
Galaxy S4 5-inch display (aka 4.99-inch) AMOLED 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution 440 PPI
Galaxy Note III 6-inch display (aka 5.9-inch) AMOLED 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution 376 PPI
Processor Manufacturer
Both the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note III will quite likely be using the new Samsung Exynos 5 Octa quad-core processor. Note that there will actually be 8 CPU cores here, but that each of the four main cores will be “backed up”, so to speak, by another core for low power tasks. So just as the NVIDIA Tegra 3 and Tegra 4 have five CPU cores, one of them being a sort of “ninja” core for low power tasks, so too is this new Exynos beast for both the Galaxy S4 and Note III.
It’s also important to note that with the Galaxy Note II the same processor was used for all models while the Galaxy S III had Exynos internationally and Qualcomm Snapdragon inside the USA. Because Samsung has come a bit of a way since all the way back when the Galaxy S III was revealed, there’s a chance they’ll be releasing the Galaxy S4 with the same processor worldwide – we shall see!
Camera Power
A back-facing 13 megapixel camera with advanced photography software can be expected on both the Galaxy S IV and the Galaxy Note III. At the moment there’s no reason to believe that the Galaxy Note III will have anything less than the Galaxy S4, and as in the past, we’re not expecting the Note to out-do the S hero in this respect. The front-facing camera will also likely be the same on both devices at 2 megapixels – with 1080p video capabilities on both sides.
S-Pen Functionality
One of the two big differentiators between the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note III will be the built-in S-Pen that the Note is known for. We’re expecting abilities advanced beyond what we’ve seen on the Note II, but won’t expect the actual hardware to be much different from what we’ve seen on the Galaxy Note 8.0 just this past month at MWC 2013. Have a peek at our hands-on with the Note 8.0 to grab a bit more insight – one of the biggest changes will be the ability to tap the back and menu buttons off-display with the pen – neat!
Conclusion: we’re all winners!
The big decision you’re going to be making – when it comes down to it again – is how long you’re willing to wait for Samsung’s 2013 vision for the perfect smartphone. You’ve got the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II out on the market already – both of them perfectly capable machines in their own right, but you want to go forth and grab the next big thing. Based on what you see above, expect similar (or identical) features on these devices in the near future when they’re shown off for real – check back a week from now and see how we did!
It’s not just the Galaxy S4 that’s getting attention this week from the tip and leak gods, it’s the Samsung Galaxy Note III as well. This week we’re to understand that the next-generation Galaxy Note handset will be sporting a 5.9-inch OLED display complete with another next-generation S-Pen ready for futuristic on-screen writing action. This device will also be pushing the Exynos OCTA processor revealed earlier this year during CES 2013.
We can be confident in expecting that this version of the Galaxy Note will be rolling out with many of the features revealed on the Galaxy Note 8.0 just this pas week at Mobile World Congress 2013 as well. With this release we saw the ability to tap the back and menu keys with the pen – an ability never before seen on a Note device. We also saw out-of-the-box integration of features like multiscreen and transparent box multi-tasking, too.
This next-generation Samsung Galaxy Note III was spoken about by The Korea Times courtesy of “an official” that spoke on condition of anonymity. While it’s not the first time this publication has published anonymous tips, it would be the first time we trusted their word without a grain of salt. That said, a Galaxy Note III with a 5.9-inch display would not be out of the question given the size increase between the first and second iteration of the device.
Have a peek at our review of the Samsung Galaxy Note II as well as our hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 to gain a better understanding of what we’ll be seeing in a third handset later this year. The release of this device is likely for the first half of 2013, but we’ve had no official work from Samsung to that tune. We’ll just have to wait and see!
We knew it would be arriving eventually on Big Red’s network, and now it’s officially only a couple days away. Verizon has announced that the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet will be available to customers starting March 7 for $599. The tablet will be able to run off of the carrier’s blazing-fast 4G LTE network and will also come equipped with an S Pen.
We first spotted the Verizon tablet at CES back in January and even got our hands on the thing. While it’s mostly no different than other carrier versions that have been out and about, Verizon’s 4G LTE will certainly be a huge selling point for this slate, and the gorgeous 10-inch display will allow to stream content at glorious speeds.
If you haven’t been keeping up with the new tablet, the Galaxy Note 10.1 comes with a quad-core Exynos processor clocked at 1.4GHz with 2GB RAM, and a 7,000mAh battery to power the tablet. The slate runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with Samsung’s Multi-view multi window mode, which allows for complete resizing and dragging of windows, similar to a desktop.
Of course, we reviewed the tablet back in August, so if you’re thinking about taking the plunge and getting the Galaxy Note 10.1 on Verizon’s network, have a look at our full review to help you decided if it’s your kind of tablet. The only difference is that you’ll be granted Big Red’s LTE, as well as the big Verizon logo on the back.
It would appear that Samsung will indeed be showing off their fabled Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet this coming week at Mobile World Congress 2013. We’ve been sent a sort of spy-shot of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 being blasted on a large screen inside the new MWC convention location – the show still being set up in a very large way. True to what we’ve seen in several leaked bits and pieces over the past couple of weeks, this device is everything you might expect it to be – with an 8-inch screen!
What we’re seeing here is tablet device that’s ever-so-slightly larger than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, this time sporting much of the same look and the S-Pen that the most recent Galaxy Tab lineup works with. This device appears to be very much working along the lines of the Samsung Galaxy Note II and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, complete with a similar-sized bezel, silvery rim, and 2nd-gen S-Pen. We also know now that it comes in white – surprise!
Other than that it’s a relative mystery as to what we’re going to work with. One of the stranger bits we’re seeing here is the inclusion of the earpiece speaker that we’d otherwise only see on a Galaxy Note II or smaller handset. Generally this kind of speaker is made for holding up to your ear – could this be the largest smartphone yet?
You’ll want to have a peek at our full collection of Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 tips and leaks in the timeline below. Until such a time as we’ve got confirmation of specifications, you know as much as we do – stay tuned to our Samsung tag portal as well as our Mobile World Congress 2013 tag portal all week long for what’s certainly going to be an exciting week!
There is another report that the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 will be heading to Europe by the end of March. The device will be heading to Bulgaria with a price tag that will compete directly with the likes of the iPad Mini. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 will come in 3 variants: Wi-Fi only, 3G + Wi-FI, and 3G + LTE + Wi-Fi. You will also have the option to choose from a 16 GB or 32 GB version of each.
The price will be around 699 leva in Bulgaria, which comes to around 358 euros, or $478.93. That’s the price for the 16GB Wi-Fi version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, the cheapest model. The 3G + Wi-Fi version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 will be around 869 leva, so about 445 euros, or $595.32. It can also be assumed that the pricing for the tablet should be the same throughout the other European countries as well.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is rumored to have an 8-inch 1280 x 800 TFT (Super Clear LCD) display, 1.6GHz Exynos 4412 quad-core processor, 16 or 32GB built-in storage with a microSD card slot, 2GB of RAM, 5MP rear-facing camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera, 4,600 mAh battery, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
Samsung will officially announce the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 next week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. So with the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 heading to Europe around the end of March, we should be looking at U.S. release date sometime in April. It’ll be nice to see how well the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 will compare against the iPad Mini.
We know Samsung is working on an 8-inch tablet in the Galaxy Note family which we have a feeling will be making its debut at MWC later this month. Three variants are expected when Samsung finally unveils the device and we’ve seen photos of the device leaked on the Internet, but the company may have just ruined its own reveal by possibly leaking the Galaxy Note 8.0 in a promotional image.
The origins of the possible leak came from yesterday’s announcement of making a red Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE available just in time for Valentine’s Day. According to the eagle-eyed readers of SammyHub, the small tablet that is hanging above the chef’s head may just be the Galaxy Note 8.
The tablet in question certainly isn’t large enough to be considered a Galaxy Note 10.1. The tablet also matches with the leaked images that were previously leaked. If that isn’t a shot of the Galaxy Note 8, then Samsung may have trolled the Internet by throwing up a completely fictional tablet in their promotional images. Chances are the tablet in question is indeed the Galaxy Note 8, which we still don’t know why exactly Samsung decided to place it in their ad for the red Galaxy Note 10.1 to begin with.
Hmmm, it seems that the batteries in phones melting are starting to make a comeback in news feeds yet again, with the latest being a Samsung Galaxy Note reported to have “exploded” (and by saying so, we mean that the battery has some issues) in the pants pocket of a 55-year old man in South Korea, resulting in some second degree burns on his right thigh. The victim did file a report over at the Bupyeong Fire Station in Incheon, South Korea, and we do wonder whether Samsung will do anything about the situation, considering a recent story about an Apple iPhone’s battery melting.
When approached to comment on the situation, a Samsung spokesman had this to say, “Lithium ion batteries can catch fire due to external pressure or sudden changes in temperature, so we’re trying to understand what really happened.” Perhaps it is time to take a step back and remember that we should always purchase original parts and not save a few dollars here and there just because there is a far cheaper battery in the market.
Today appeared to be quite the day for leaks, with the Samsung GT-B9150 coming in most recently with a powerful Exynos 5 processor under the hood and a 1080p display to its name. This device brings on the 1.7GHz A15-based Exynos 5 5250 Dual processor to the game, this being the same massive beast we’ve seen in the Google Nexus 10 and the Samsung Series 3 Chromebook. This device could be the Samsung Galaxy S IV or it could be a brand new Galaxy Note – at the moment the details are quite scarce and fried with salt, as it were.
The leak today comes in the form of a benchmark result which gives away the product code for the smartphone or tablet-like device, that again being GT-B9150. This device’s code name appeared once before in similar results quite a few months ago, that time with a 720 display and certainly after the release of the Samsung Galaxy S III. This puts it in line with a release of the fourth iteration of Samsung’s flagship smartphone, but the “B” in the name we’re seeing here throws one for a loop.
This release will likely take place at the same time as the rest of the Samsung lineup tipped earlier today, that list containing several Samsung Galaxy Tab devices with different sized displays. Each of those models will be released with the name Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 while this model, again, appears to be a smaller device than the tablet pack and will either work with Galaxy S or Galaxy Note before its number – III for a note, IV for an S.
One point of clarity here is the fact that we’re so close to Mobile World Congress 2013 that we’re more than likely not going to see any of the devices listed here at that time. We’ll quite likely see Samsung present a series of devices after the event at least a week or two out, keeping the attention for themselves rather than sharing with the Mobile World Congress hoards of device-bringers. Have a peek at the timeline below for more insight!
