Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Back to School with Student Edition Bundle

So you are out looking for a new tablet device, but cannot really quite make up your mind? Well, you have basically two choices – one that hails from the fruity company known as Apple and runs on the iOS platform, making it the best selling tablet to date, while the other would be one that runs off the Android operating system from Google, and it comes in a myriad of form factors as well as manufacturers. Well, Samsung is back with yet another Android powered tablet, where it is known as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 that targets students, logically calling it the Student Edition Bundle.

This special bundle would include a Keyboard Dock and an USB Adapter, without costing you any more money since it retails for $249.99 instead of the actual retail value of $349.99. This offer is good from tomorrow onwards, and will last for just a couple of weeks. The Special Edition that comes with a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 in a unique white color should be able to rack up those fingerprints quick and fast.

Students will definitely find their fair share of benefits from the bundle, where it will include a physical keyboard that can be hooked up to the tablet itself, while the USB adapter is able to support plugging in USB thumb drives in addition to peripherals such USB mice. On the software front, you get Polaris Office pre-loaded, making the Galaxy Tab 2 the perfect device for typing research reports – or perhaps, even creating presentations, right there and then on the spot. I do wonder whether this will affect Microsoft’s plan for their Surface tablets that run on Windows 8 as well as Windows RT, depending on the type of processor for that particular Surface tablet.

Travis Merrill, Director of Marketing, Galaxy Tab, Samsung Electronics America, said, “The education market is a significant priority for Samsung, and we are very pleased to deliver a bundle that is sure to be appealing to just about any student at a very competitive price point. A busy student can achieve a PC-like setup in the dorm room, yet still pop the Galaxy Tab 2 out of the dock and slip it into a pocket for usage while on the go. It truly is the smarter way to learn.”

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 17, 2012

Friday has come and gone, which means that the weekend is here once again. The latest iPhone 5 rumors have propelled Apple’s stock to its highest point ever, and it turns out the company’s funds will go toward helping tap a recently-discovered underground river in Crook County, Oregon. Earlier today we saw a picture of what was reported to be the Samsung Galaxy Note II, but later on in the day Daniel YU informed everyone that it was just his mock-up used without his permission. That’s disappointing, but his mock-up looks great, so be sure to check that out.

According to Lenovo, Windows RT tablets could cost $300 less than Windows 8 tablets, and it appears that Yahoo is on the lookout for a new COO. After discovering a glitch with digital signatures earlier in the week, Microsoft is once again publishing Windows Phone apps, and Twitter’s new API update restricts some third-party apps, so watch out for that. UK retailer Clove is reporting that the black Samsung Galaxy S III will be out in October, and a new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 bundle comes packed with bonuses that students are going to find hard to resist.

There’s a particularly nasty Trojan dubbed “Shamoon” that’s making the rounds, and in some rather surprising news from the day, it seems that OnLive is shutting down today. OnLive executives said throughout the day that everything with the company is fine, but later, more evidence that supports such a shutdown surfaced. Not good. Both models of the Nexus 7 are now in stock again on the Google Play store, and third parties were right there to begin pushing all sorts of accessories for it, while we’re hearing rumors that claim Apple’s set-top box will come with cloud DVR and a simple UI.

The beta for Steam’s upcoming Big Picture Mode will be kicking off at the beginning of next month, and HP is getting serious about tackling the consumer tablet division (or at least trying to again). The iPad Mini – and future iPad iterations for that matter – will apparently be getting a special ITO film, and Warren Spector is really pushing for Epic Mickey on the Xbox 360 and PS3, but he needs your help in convincing Disney.

Finally tonight, we have a number of original articles for you to peruse. Don Reisinger asks if there will one day be a universal gaming console, Ben Kersey has SlashGear’s review of The Expendables 2, and Chris Burns has a hands-on with the Motorola PHOTON Q. Enjoy your weekend, folks!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Student Edition bundle brings on bonuses

Education-minded minds at Samsung have come forth with a deal made perfect for the upcoming school season: the Galaxy Tab 2 Student Edition bundle. This bundle includes the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (7-inch tablet) in a limited edition white color included in a package with a keyboard dock and a USB adapter as well. This package will be sold by Samsung for a competitive $249.99 to keep up with recent releases of rather inexpensively priced competitors such as the Nexus 7 by Google.

This package takes on the already neat Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (see our full review) and adds on a keyboard dock and a USB adapter so you can use a variety of accessories right along with it. This USB adapter will allow students to use USB thumb drives, USB mice, and more. Also right out of the box the tablet will be including the app Polaris Office so students working in a variety of document formats can make their learning experience swift and easy.

This tablet has a 7-inch TFT (PLS) display at 1024 x 600 pixel resolution, works with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and has a 8GB of built-in memory. You’ll be working with Bluetooth 3.0 as well as wi-fi for connectivity, theres a microSD card slot so you can add up to 32GB of additional storage, and you’ve got an integrated IR-blaster so you can control your television like you would a standard remote control.

The tablet measures in at .41 x 4.8 x 7.6 inches and weighs in at 0.76 pounds in all. This device also has GPS, stereo speakers, and two cameras – a VGA camera on the front for video chat and a 3 megapixel camera on the back for photos and video.

The deal only lasts from 8/19 until 9/1 and will be popping up at Best Buy, Amazon, Tiger Direct, Costco and Fry’s. Each of the devices on their own would be a total of $350 USD, and again, the limited time only price for the package in the end is $249.99. Samsung also has the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 on the market now for just about twice that amount, but there’s certainly some perks to consider – check out our full review of the Galaxy Note 10.1 right this minute as well!

LTE equipped Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 lands on Verizon August 17th

The WiFi version of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 has been available for some time, but now Verizon will be offering an LTE-enabled version of the tablet starting from August 17th. Previously if you wanted a tablet in the 7-inch range and wanted LTE, you’d have had to cough up a hefty amount of money for the Galaxy Tab 7.7, but Verizon will be offering the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 for a reasonable $350 off-contract.

The LTE version of the tablet features similar same specs to the WiFi-only version, with a dual-core 1.2Ghz processor, 7-inch PLS 1024×600 display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage with a microSD card slot, and three megapixel camera. The Tab 2 7.0 also comes with a front-facing VGA camera and runs Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box.

As Samsung has fitted the tablet with an LTE radio, customers will be able to surf the information superhighway with fast speeds on Verizon’s network rather than relying on WiFi. On top of that, the Tab 2 7.0 is Samsung Approved for Enterprise, featuring 256-bit AES encryption and support for Microsoft’s Exchange ActiveSync as well as support for VPNs and MDM solutions.

At $350 off-contract, it’s not a bad deal at all, even if you won’t be getting the latest and greatest specs. Still, if this sounds like your next tablet, then make sure to pick one up on Verizon’s website or in a retail store starting from August 17th.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 packing 4G LTE comes to Verizon on August 17th

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 70 packing 4G LTE comes to Verizon on August 17th

Verizon subscribers jonesing for a 7-inch LTE tablet won’t have to consider springing for the pricey Galaxy Tab 7.7 any longer. The carrier just revealed plans to offer up a 4G-equipped (and previously hinted) version of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 starting on August 17th. There’s no revolution under the hood outside of the cellular link: it’s still toting Android 4.0, the rear 3.2-megapixel and front VGA cameras, a (slightly faster) 1.2GHz dual-core chip and a somewhat thin 8GB of built-in memory. At the $350 contract-free asking price, however, the tinier Galaxy Tab is low-hanging fruit for data lovers.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 hits the UK on August 22nd, starts at £300 for WiFi-only model

SlashGear Morning Wrap-up: August 9th, 2012

This morning it’s time for the leaks to come rolling in, starting with the Sony Xperia Tablet – all thin and new looking. Two “pre-human” species have been found in another awesome day in science that’ll be bringing new understanding to us on the whole “where did we come from” question. There’s still a bunch of Agent Orange over in Vietnam from the conflict they (and we) had about 40 years ago – now we’re going to help get rid of it with super-heat.

You’ll want to read up on OUYA’s millions if you want to get in on the Kickstarter game – watch out for rumors! There’s an HTC Windows Phone 8 announcement coming on quick – September is calling! If you’re a lover of the Megaupload scandal and breakdown, you’ll want to check out the Dotcom mansion raid video for yourself.

Samsung is not interested in RIM – and that’s final! There’s a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition coming to the market rather soon. If you’re in love with Scosche, you’ll have a ball with the brand new boomStream Bluetooth speaker – out asap! Pinterest has opened registration for all users – previously you needed an invite!

Apple’s next iPhone appears to have been torn up and laid out for all to see. There’s a Nikon Coolpix L610 out there in the wild right now with 16 megapixels of awesome for $250 USD. Right along those same lines is the Nikon 1 J2, a handheld interchangeable lens camera with fabulous potential. Finally you’ll want to see the Lenovo ThinkPad 2 tablet with Windows 8 as well – it may be a winner!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition coming soon

Everyone is scrambling to get their hands on the cheap and cheerful Nexus 7, starting at $199 for the 8GB model, but Samsung might be looking to entice customers with its own affordable wares in the near future. A tipster has sent in a picture to Engadget showing off a student edition of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. It’s the same tablet that the company already sells, but Samsung will be throwing in a keyboard and USB adapter as part of the $249 package.

The new student edition bundle will reportedly go on sale on August 19th at Best Buy. Details of the tablet are otherwise the same, with specs including a dual-core 1Ghz processor, 1GB of RAM, a 1024×600 PLS screen, 8GB of storage, and a 3-megapixel camera. A front-facing VGA camera is also included, and those looking for more storage space can opt for microSD cards up to 64GB.

The whole shebang is also running on Ice Cream Sandwich, with work well underway on xda-developers for Jelly Bean ROMs. The tablet was only released a few short months ago as well, so we imagine Samsung will push out an update to the latest version of Android when it’s made sure everything is good to go.

The included keyboard with the student edition should help with often messy affair of typing on a tablet, and the USB adapter will allow users to plug in any additional accessories, like mice or flash drives. It’s certainly not a bad deal for $249, so pop into Best Buy on August 19th if this student edition sounds like a solid purchase.
