Galaxy S5 Review

Galaxy S5 ReviewOne of the most anticipated smartphone of 2014 has landed. Announced at MWC 2014, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is now available in retail and scores of people have already upgraded. If you are reading this, it means that you are still sitting on the fence and doing some homework to see if this is the ideal smartphone for you.

As any high-profile device, the Galaxy S5 generates excitement, passion and sometime controversy. The expectations can run high and any disappointment can become noisy and virulent. However important, expectations don’t make a product good or bad, but a solid set of functions (or the lack of) can.

In this review, I will put focus on real-world use case, and share with you my experience of using the GS5 as my primary phone. Ready? (more…)

    Samsung Galaxy Round Review

Samsung Galaxy Round ReviewWhen it was announced, the Samsung Galaxy Round has sparked a lot of interest and curiosity since it is Samsung’s first phone that comes with a slightly curved display. Interestingly, although the underlying AMOLED display is somewhat “flexible”, the phone itself is curved. There was a lot of preconceptions (if not misconceptions) about what a “curved” phone should look like, or whether it should exist at all.

Some said that it should “roll completely” (what’s the point of a stick-phone if it occupies the same volume?), while others didn’t see any value in a curve design, calling it a “gimmick”… well, if  “design” variations was a gimmick, maybe we should all wear the same shoes. After all, they all protect our feet, and that’s all we want right? Of course not… Let’s look at the Galaxy round as we would with any other phone: how does it feel? What does it do for you? How good is it in the real world? By the end of this review, you will have the answer to all these questions. (more…)

    Samsung Galaxy NX Camera Review

Samsung Galaxy NX Camera ReviewShortly before the first Galaxy Camera came out, we knew that Android cameras were going to land and stay. As cameras get smarter, the complexity of the software stack also becomes too hard to develop for camera makers (which are definitely NOT software-centric folks). Samsung is the company that has the best Android Camera offering today, and with the Galaxy NX, it just took the whole sector to the next level.

Optically, the Galaxy NX is more or less a Samsung NX300, a rather potent interchangeable lens camera that our friend Karsten Lemm has reviewed recently. The user interface is however a powerful Android platform that comes with everything that you can expect from a high-end phone, including a 4G LTE connectivity (you have to provide the subscription, obviously). The combination is the Galaxy NX, a smart camera that you use like a smartphone, but that has the image quality of an enthusiast shooter. I’ve used it for a few weeks, and I will tell you how my experience could map into your own. (more…)

    Galaxy Note 3 Review

Galaxy Note 3 ReviewWe saw the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for the first time at IFA in Berlin when it was unveiled alongside the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Now the device is available this month for 299.99 from all four carriers, and we spent some real-world usage time with a retail unit from Sprint.

Samsung has come a long way since the release of the original Galaxy Note 1 in 2011. Then, most people made fun of me when I was placing calls from this “ridiculously big phone”. Fast forward to 2013, it looks like the Galaxy Note smartphone lineup is taken very seriously now, and Samsung has sold over 30 million Galaxy Note 2. Ultimately, the Korean giant started the “large display phones” trend in the mobile industry and recent flagship smartphones such as the LG G2, feature over 5-inch displays while they are not even categorized in the phablet segment anymore. 5” is the new normal.

The most notable feature upgrades in the Galaxy Note 3 are the full HD 5.7inch AMOLED display, the new powerful processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (2.3 Ghz), 3GB RAM, an improved S-Pen and the new design language with a faux-stitched leather back that replaces the overly criticized plastic body of the Galaxy Note 2.

On the software side, the most interesting innovation is the Air Command menu that works with the S-Pen and gives access to five practical productivity features that we will describe in the review. (more…)

    Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 Review

    Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 Review

Samsung didn’t just release a 10.1-inch version of its Galaxy Tab 3 as they released their latest tablet in an 8.0 and 7.0 version. Along with the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 3 we were lent for our review, Samsung also supplied us with the 8-inch version. Both tablets have many similarities, but ultimately, we wanted to treat both products as their own version considering how many people would be looking at either Galaxy Tab 3 to potentially purchase.

One of the most obvious differences between the 10.1-inch and 8.0-inch variants are its size. Aside from that, the 8-inch Galaxy Tab 3 features a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, is available with either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, a 5MP rear-facing camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera and a 4,450mAh battery. Some of the specs are an improvement over the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, while others are slightly under, but for the most part, both the 10.1-inch and 8-inch variants are very similar.

Will the 8-inch Galaxy Tab 3 perform better than the ho-hum 10.1-inch version? There’s only one way to find out, and that’s by continuing on with our review. (more…)

    Samsung Galaxy S4 Review

    Samsung Galaxy S4 Review

The Samsung Galaxy S4 has arrived to America, and if you have been eagerly waiting to know how it feels to use the Galaxy S4 in the real world, the wait is over. Since its predecessor sold more than 50M units worldwide, the Samsung Galaxy S4 has to live up to rather high anticipation and expectations. You may have followed our first hands-on review of the S4, so you may know a fair amount about this smartphone. for this complete review, we have had more time to use the Galaxy S4 as a primary smartphone, and needless to say that on paper, it improves upon all aspects of the Galaxy S3 with which you may have seen or played with. If not, don’t worry, we’ll provide a good picture of what the S4 is. Now, the question is: how does it actually behave in the real world, and is it a smartphone for you? (more…)

    Samsung Galaxy Mega Hands-On Review

Samsung Galaxy Mega Hands On ReviewSamsung has just announced the Samsung Galaxy Mega, a device that has been talked about as a rumor until now. As its name indicates, and featuring a 6.3″ display (there is also a 5.8″ version), the Galaxy Mega is even bigger than any other Samsung smartphone -even the Galaxy Note 2- and it will likely end up as being the largest smartphone available in Russia and Europe (since devices like the Huawei Mate aren’t sold there). The American version will have to wait as there is no announcement for it, yet. As Samsung Mobile leader J.K Shin puts it, the Galaxy Mega has been designed to unlock the potential of ” the bigger screen for extensive viewing multimedia, web browsing, and more”. We knew this day would come, but we didn’t know that it would come before September. We’ve got one in our hands, and here are our first impressions of the device. (more…)

    Chromebook Samsung Series 3 Review

    Chromebook Samsung Series 3 Review

    Chromebook Samsung series 3.

Just like set top boxes, which are dedicated devices for streaming video content, the Chromebook is a dedicated web browsing appliance. It is an inexpensive piece of hardware, running on a free Operating System, with free software and updates (OS, firmware and drivers), troubleshooting free, anti-virus and anti-malware proof and you cannot “mess it up”, even if you wanted to.

Now, assuming, somehow, it was “broken”, it could be restored to the factory settings with just one click, well, may be two. In case the device is misplaced, stolen or just died, there is no data loss, unless it was stored locally, no software re-installations, no reconfiguration. Put your hands on another Chromebook, login your gmail account and voila, everything should be where you left it off. Sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? The truth is I am as eager as you are to find out! The following is my review: (more…)

    Samsung Series 9 Review (NP900)

    Samsung Series 9 Review (NP900)
The Samsung Series 9 2012 (aka NP900) is presented by Samsung as a laptop line that “pushes the envelope”, and the company has certainly up the ante by introducing a new design that is 20% thinner and more robust than the original Series 9 laptop (the 900X, which I owned and use one for about 12 months). The changes are quite obvious from the outside: this year’s model has directly accessible USB ports and the whole design is simply better in general. In fact, this is one of the nicest laptop design on the market, and in the 15″ category, there is simply nothing like it. It looks good on paper, but how is it in the real world? In this review, I will go over the look and feel, the system performance and the battery life to tell you how it really is to use one of those. (more…)
