Severed Wampa Arm Keeps the Ice off Your Windshield This Winter

It’s a little-known fact that Jedi Knights and Native Americans share something in common. Namely, they use every part of the animals they kill. What you didn’t know about The Empire Strikes Back was that after Luke hacked off the hungry Wampa’s arm, he kept it.

I’m sure you’re curious exactly what Luke did with a furry, severed Wampa arm. He used it to scrape the ice off the windows of his Snowspeeder between missions on Hoth. Now you can follow in Luke’s footsteps thanks to ThinkGeek with the really cool Star Wars Wampa Ice Scraper Mitt.

The mitt is really designed for scraping ice too with a fuzzy glove to keep your hand nice and toasty while you scrape. The glove section of the mitt is machine washable and it has a nice 3 x 4-inch ice scraper in the palm. The Wampa Arm Ice Scraper will be available in early October for $24.99(USD).

R2-D2 Cake Looks Droid-licious

This is exactly the droid cake that I am looking for. That dome is not accurate though. It should have a giant bite taken out of it, because no one can resist an Astromech with icing.
R2D2 Cake
They say that this cake is enough to feed about 30-40 humans, but I don’t know, I think I could eat 5 people’s worth of this thing. It was made by the Lola May Cake Company. They sure build a decent droid, and they did a fantastic job on this sugary treat.

I’m guessing that the birthday boy or girl got dibs on R2′s restraining bolt, because I don’t see it in the pic.

Aerofex Hover Bike Brings Return of the Jedi’s Speeder Bikes to Life

I have dreamed about owning a Landspeeder or a Speeder bike for ages. Now it looks like these vehicles might finally be becoming a reality thanks to a California-based company called Aerofex, which is using a similar hovering design in their vehicles.
Star Wars Speederbike
The vehicle in the video below uses helicopter dynamics to lift and propel it across rough terrain.

They’ve managed to fix the stability issue by including a control bar at the the users knee level that allows the pilot to lean and balance the vehicle and keep it airborne.

The vehicle has been tested in California’s Mojave Desert and also in more crowded conditions. Right now, the Aerofex machine is being tested at a top speed of 30 mph and a max height of 15 feet above the ground. I can’t wait until we can buy these. Put two droids in the back and you are good to go.

Curiosity becomes First roving machine on Mars

This afternoon the folks responsible for the NASA mission at their Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California announced that they’d begun to move forward on wheels. The Curiosity rover landed less than a month ago on the planet, it being another of NASA’s successful landings in what’s expected to be a long line of Mars explorations. The rover was announced today to have rolled forward about 15 feet before rotating its wheels 120 degrees and advancing another 8 feet in a new direction.

For the science fiction lovers amongst us there’s also the announcement made today that this mission’s managers have decided name the landing site “Bradbury Landing” in honor of the late writer. Ray Bradbury passed away this June and would have been 92 today, the day of this history next step in the NASA mission. Michael Meyer, lead scientist for the Mars Exploration Program at NASA headquarters, made their intent clear today.

“We have truly extended our reach and touched another planet. Today would have been Ray Bradbury’s 92nd birthday, but he’s already reached immortality with the 100s of short stories he’s written and nearly 50 books. His books have truly inspired us. The Martian Chronicles have inspired our curiosity and opened our minds to the possibility of life on Mars. In his honor, we declared the place that Curiosity touched down to be forever known as Bradbury Landing.” – Meyer

Have a peek at the news conference given where the declaration was made and the team became the first in the universe to rove about the planet Mars.

Video streaming by Ustream

Inside that conference you’ll see old footage – also included below – of Ray Bradbury reciting his poem “If only we had been taller” at an event at Caltech on the eve of the craft Mariner 9 heading to Mars in 1971. This event is epic as well, with his words containing the power to launch our ships of the future – proof is all around us!

Stargate SG-1 Death Glider Made from LEGO

I’m huge fan of Stargate both on the big screen and the TV series that ran for so long. In fact, my first date with my future wife years ago was to see Stargate on the big screen. We watched each season of the TV show and even watched the spinoff series as well. I particularly liked Stargate Atlantis.

Combining my love of Stargate and LEGO, a guy going by Kevin Walter has created this replica of the Death Glider from the Stargate SG-1 television series using the ubiquitous building blocks. Kevin used gray and beige bricks for the design and the finished product looks really cool. I particularly like the way he pulled off the canopy.

I also like the way he created the canons that pop open before they fire. Sadly, there are no plans offered so you can build your own version of this flying aircraft, but you can check out more pics of the ship over on Flickr.

Stephen King’s The Dark Tower Shot Down at Warner Bros.

Stephen King is one of the most celebrated modern authors in the world. He has a huge number of books, movies, and TV shows to his credit. King is typically thought of as a horror writer, but some of my favorite stories King has ever written don’t necessarily fit the traditional horror genre.

dark tower

Some of my favorite books from King are The Dark Tower series that follows gunslinger Roland Deschain. This series of books has been optioned for a movie and a TV show tie in, but fans of the franchise will be saddened to hear that things are looking bad for The Dark Tower right now. Warner Bros. has officially passed on developing an adaptation of the book series for the big screen and for TV.

Sadly, Warner Bros. taking a pass comes after Universal Pictures passed on it last year. The curious thing is that the project had a serious names attached to it, with Ron Howard attached to direct at least the first part of the series and set to oversee the entire project. Russell Crowe was also said to be interested in playing the gunslinger. The project would have had a movie trilogy with a limited run TV shows that would tie content between the three movies. I’ll add this project right next to the Halo live-action movie on my list of the best movies that never were.

Papercraft Crysis Nanosuit 2.0 is a True Work of Art

I’ve always been impressed by the things papercraft artists can pull off with simple paper, glue and an X-Acto knife. I’m particularly blown away by this paper model of the Nanosuit 2.0 from Crysis 2 and Crysis 3.

nanosuit 2 paper model 1

The model was created by Julius Perdana of Paper Replika, after initially building a 1/6th scale model of the Nanosuit a couple of years ago as a commission for Crytek.

nanosuit 2 paper model 2

Recently, Julius came across a Crysis 3 promotional image of the Nanosuit 2.0 equipped with a tactical bow, and decided to make an even more impressive version of the model, along with the bow.

nanosuit 2 paper model 3

The template for the model was drawn as a scalable vector image, with all of the details handdrawn by the artist. I can only imagine that means he could produce a life-size model using the same vector art if he had the time and inclination. You can check out more images of the Nanosuit 2.0 papercraft model over on Paper Replika, where you can also download the template and assembly instructions so you can assemble your own.

Alien Darth Vader Helmet: Ripley, Believe it or Not!

If Darth Vader were a Xenomorph, man, that would be one heck of a scary movie. Scarier than all of the Alien movies combined. Behold the evilness right here before your very eyes. Thomas Spanos from the ‘As You Wish Project‘ created this mashup of Lord Vader and a Xenomorph into one cool helmet.

hrg trooperIt even features Vader’s lightsaber as the secondary alien mouth. It’s called the HRG Trooper, named after artist H.R.Giger who designed the original Alien. It is terrifying and awesome.

If Ripley saw this thing she would have just run out of an airlock. You can’t fight something this awesome and insane. You just can’t win against Vader as an alien.

R2-D2 Beverage Dispenser Serves the Drinks You Are Looking for

This little droid may not look like much, but he’s fulled to the brim. With booze. Or whatever other beverage you choose. This R2 unit has electronic Super Soaker parts inside and here, he is filled with blue gatorade.
r2 drink dispenser
Due to the unfortunate placement of his spigot, it actually looks like the little droid is relieving himself right into your cup. That’s a great image to consider while you are drinking up. Inside is the Super Soaker pump and a water bottle to store liquid. R2′s body was one of those big protein drink mix containers. Its creators explain “After spraying it white and masking off the entire thing with blue painter’s tape, the shapes for the blue designs were cut out and painted. Half of a foam sphere from the hobby shop was used to form the dome.”

Pretty cool, but I’m glad we never saw R2 relieve himself in the movies. I didn’t know droids peed blue, though, so you learn something new every day.
