DIY Google Glasses Provide Translation via Subtitles

The first time we featured programmer Will Powell, we learned how he was able to make a crude version of Google’s Project Glass augmented reality glasses. It turns out that Powell has made another version of his hack that is capable of translating spoken language and displaying the translation in subtitles.

project glass translator will powell

Like with his earlier project, Powell used a pair of Vuzix STAR 1200 glasses as the base of the hack. If I understood what Powell said on his blog, a Jawbone Bluetooth microphone picks up the audio and sends it to a mobile device, which then processes the words using translation API made by Microsoft. The translation is then passed on to a Raspberry Pi, which sends a text of the translation to the Vuzix display and a transcript of the conversation taking place to a TV. Below is a shot of the subtitle being displayed on the glasses’ monitor:

And here’s a shot of the transcript on the TV:

project glass translator will powell 3

Finally here’s a demo of the hack in action. Note that there is a significant delay in the translation, which according to Powell occurs mainly when the audio goes through the translation API.

The sheer number of gadgets needed plus the fact that the Raspberry Pi is physically connected to the glasses via an S-video connector means that this is not a portable system, but I am still amazed at what one man armed with off the shelf parts can do. Besides, all devices – including the ones Powell needs – get more powerful and smaller in time. The time when we’ll be able to reenact Casa de mi Padre is closer than we think.

Doctor Who Pillows for When You Inevitably Don’t Blink for Several Hours

If you are in the market for some nerdy pillows – specifically of the Doctor Who variety – here are some great designs from Etsy seller FourEyesHandmade. This Dalek pillow is my favorite of the bunch – with a bit of a minimalist design.

dalek pillow
If you have to exterminate wakefulness, just rest your head on this one for $32(USD) and dream sweet dreams of killing the Doctor’s most feared enemies. There’s also a sweet TARDIS pillow for the same price, though it would be cooler if it were actually shaped like a TARDIS.

tardis pillow

My second favorite is this Cybermen pillow, also for $32(USD). This one looks like it is based on the modern Cybermen, not the classic version.

These are some neat pillows to rest your head on after your next Doctor Who marathon. You can find all three of these designs, as well as a variety of other cool and geeky pillows over at Four Eyes Handmade’s Etsy shop.

Ruin post-apocalyptic CG short gets Fox green light

It’s time for another after-humans full-length movie to hit theaters with its roots coming from that all-powerful soap box and launch point : the Internet. The source of this feature is a short all-CG video called Ruin. This video (also shown in this post) will bring you on a journey through a one-populated human city that’s since become overgrown by nature untamed – can’t wait for the full show!

It appears that The Hollywood Reporter has a tip on the creator of the special effects short, Wes Ball, speaking with Fox to create a full-length feature film. Ball will co-write the film with T.S. Nowlin. McG (Joseph McGinty) will likely be producing the film with Steve Tzirlin from Lucasfilm.

UPDATE: Ball has now confirmed – “I can now reveal it is set up with the good folks at 20th Century Fox to be developed into a full length feature.” Exciting!

The plot in the short centers on a man with a motorcycle attempting to escape a futuristic flying machine not unlike what we’ve seen in the Terminator film series. This short contains a fabulously real looking set of effects including device-mounted camera perspective, light, dark, and shadow effects, lens effects, fabric physics, and of course some explosions to keep it all very lively. Transparent tablet computers, human hair, and a society covered in leaves included.

Should we see this film follow the storyline we’ve seen here, we can expect an evil corporation by the name of Haven Nanosystems to be oppressing the remains of the human race in an impressive display of action and Mad Mad-like environments and technology.

BONUS: Also check out this WebGL music video experiment that Ball participated in called ROME in which his animations – some taken from the Ruin animations – are used in an interactive landscape. Great stuff!

Lightsaber Chopsticks Now Light Up!

I know, two lightsaber posts in a row – but I couldn’t resist posting this when I saw it. Yes, thanks to the gadget wizards at Japan’s Kotobukiya, we’re about to get chopsticks that not only look like lightsabers, but that actually light up.

lightsaber light up chopsticks

I first came across lightsaber chopsticks a couple of years ago, but they were missing the most important feature of all. These new light-up LED lightsaber chopsticks come in either Luke Skywalker blue or Darth Vader red, and will light up your bento box with the push of a button.

NCSX is accepting pre-orders now for November 2012 delivery for $22.90(USD) a pair. I know that’s a long time to wait, but just think how awesome they’ll look sitting under the tree this holiday season.

Custom Double-Bladed Lightsaber Outsabers Darth Maul

Which is the sexiest lightsaber ever? Luke’s? Vader’s? Darth Maul’s? I reject that last one on principal, simply because it was in the prequels and the lightsaber battles sucked so bad. No, this custom double-bladed beauty right here is the sexiest ever as far as I’m concerned.
lightsaber
This weapon was completely hand-crafted by Slothfurnace, who is known for making some of the finest Jedi weapons this planet has ever seen. This blade is modeled after the saber featured in the SWTOR video game. Yep, this is the undisputed king of lightsabers in my opinion. If you’ve seen sexier, I’d like to see it.

Slothfurnace clearly knows how to make a kick-ass weapon. It’s just too bad that no one has the Jedi powers to use them in this universe. You can find more pics of the build process here.

Rare Star Wars Poster Looks Stupid, Worth Thousands

There are a lot of rare Star Wars collectibles that are worth money, but usually they are toys and costumes and the like. Some obscure items like this 1978 promotional poster you see here are also worth a lot for some reason. The poster shows C-3PO and R2-D2 carrying musical instruments. It basically looks ridiculous, but despite that, it’s expected to sell for between $5,000 and $8,000 at auction.

star wars concertThe poster was created to promote The Star Wars Symphonic Suite by composer John Williams. So why is it worth so much? Well, it’s rare to begin with and it is also signed by George Lucas. Plus it was designed by John Alvin, who made some of the best movie posters ever made like Blade Runner, E.T., and Gremlins for example.

If you have the money and like the poster, now is your chance to own it. Head on over to Paul Fraser Collectibles for more information on the auction.

Tusken Raider Pushes a Pod Racer Stroller – Why Not?

The last time we saw a Tusken Raider and a Pod Racer together, the Raider was shooting at it. That’s not the case here. Either things got so bad in the race that he ended up pushing it and refuses to give up or he’s just starting this kid off young, hoping to make him a Pod Racing champion.
pod racer
This Tusken Raider is not wearing the traditional gear of his people either, unless there’s a Nike Store on Tatooine now. This custom-built Anakin’s Pod Racer baby stroller was spotted being pushed in the last leg of the “Course of the Force” race in San Diego.

That Pod Racer looks sweet though. Look how shiny it is. And the little Anakin has a lightsaber at the ready just in case any other racers try to pass him.

Plush Spocktopus is More Logical Than It Looks

If Spock had eight arms he could have done several jobs on the Enterprise bridge at once instead of just being Science officer. This seems like the next logical step in Vulcan evolution anyway. First you master emotions and the mind, then you grow several more arms so that you can work more efficiently.
plush spocktopus
This plush was made by Karen at SewMuch2Luv. She combined a cephalopod with Spock for a friend of hers. The result is affectionately known as Spocktopus – which was a logical choice. The other choice would obviously have been a cthulhu Sulu, which would have been alright, but not as neat as this one.

Millenium Falcon Skirt Smuggles Some Nice Cargo

The Falcon has never looked so graceful in flight as it does while this girl is walking down the street, though it does tend to rock back and forth with every movement of her hips. Hey that’s only because she’s navigating an asteroid field of cat calls and TIE fighters.
millennium falcon cosplay
This sexy Millennium Falcon skirt is the work of Landa Calrissian aka Jennifer Landa. You might remember her from her Death Star Dress at last years San Diego Comic-Con. This year she’s all about winning the Kessel Run and of course our hearts.

I’ve never seen anyone wear a ship so well.

Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn Trailer is All Tease and no Action

I’m still mad that the big-screen flick based on Halo was canceled. I would still love to see a live-action version of Halo come to the big screen. I’m holding out hope that the project will be pulled out of mothballs at some point. At least for now, as close as we’re going to get to a live-action Halo movie is the web series Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn.

fud

The official trailer for the web series premiered Comic-Con this week, and it doesn’t offer much detail. If you haven’t been following this web series, it’s a short live-action digital series set to debut on October 5 with a series of five episodes. The episodes will air to build up anticipation for the launch of the Halo 4 videogame on November 6.

The actors and other staff members for the web series are actually pretty impressive. Forward Unto Dawn will be Directed by Stewart Hendler (H+, Sorority Row) and written by Todd Helbing and Aaron Helbing (Smallville, Spartacus), and the cast includes a variety of established and up-and-coming Hollywood talent, including Tom Green (Dance Academy) as Thomas Lasky, Anna Popplewell (The Chronicles of Narnia) as Chyler Silva, Daniel Cudmore (X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, The Twilight Saga) as the Master Chief, Ayelet Zurer (Angels & Demons, Munich) as Mehaffey, Mike Dopud (Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol) as General Black, Enisha Brewster (Footloose) as April Orenski, Masam Holden (Grey’s Anatomy, Elizabethtown) as Michael “Sully” Sullivan, Osric Chau (2012) as JJ Chen, Iain Belcher (Supernatural) as Vickers, and Kat De Lieva as Dimah.

An extended 90 minute version of the web series will be offered in the Halo 4 Limited Edition box set and through on-demand video services on November 6.
