FishPi Drone Relies on Inexpensive Raspberry Pi Computer to Cross the Ocean

With all this talk about unmanned drones, it was only a matter of time before a couple of interesting projects would surface. Check out FishPi, an unmanned water vessel which will run a cheap Raspberry Pi computer to try and cross the Atlantic Ocean. Will it succeed?

Its creator, Greg Holloway thinks that FishPi will succeed. It’s currently in the proof-of-concept phase. The autonomous, slightly robotic, drone will also feature a 130 W solar panel that will power it. GPS and a servo controller board helps it guide through squalls. There’s a compass, motor and camera, which can capture video as well.

The prototype version measures 20″ in length, and wards off the elements thanks to a plastic sandwich container. I think that the final build will need to be a bit more refined than that, but if they ultimately set a whole bunch of these off on an Atlantic journey, then odds are that one of them might just make it.

Stormtrooper Adirondack Chair Perfect for Lounging on the Death Star’s Back Porch

This could be the greatest outdoor chair of all time. I want a set of four for my deck RIGHT NOW. I have my credit card in hand, and will pay top dollar for a set. If needed, I will borrow money from Jabba the Hutt to cover the cost.

This Stormtrooper helmet chair was created by Gotwood Workshops, and it is completely awesome. Not only is the helmet back perfect, but it’s even got the Empire logo carved into the arms of the chair too.

Unfortunately, the GotWood guys don’t plan on selling these because of copyright concerns, but you might want to swing by Gotwood’s Facebook page to compliment them on the design anyhow. And while you’re over there, you’ll find out that they appear to be working on a matching Darth Vader chair too.

Millenium Falcon Cake: She May Not Look Like Much but She Has Frosting Where It Counts

This Millenium Falcon wedding cake looks delicious, although you have to really feel for our buddy Han. He looks really scared there with his eyes popping out of his fondant head.

I’m not sure of all the construction details, but they did an amazing job. The detail is super nice, right down to the guns and radar dish. I’m not sure why Leia is blonde though. Probably because the bride is a blonde. And the heads of Boba Fett and some stormtroopers are a nice touch. And not a spot on it suggesting that a finger had poked at it to get a taste.

Well, I hope that this couple shares a happy life full of geek treats like this cake. Well, not so much that they end up looking like Jabba though. Great cake!

Death Star Carved out of a Ping Pong Ball

This miniature Death Star is the ultimate power of the table tennis universe. That’s right, this Death Star was actually created by carving a ping pong ball.
death star ball
It was created by a forum user named tatumaru5963. I’m not sure what went into to making it since Google Translate kinda sucks, but it does look pretty amazing. There are some images that show a few of the steps necessary to create this thing though and judging by those images, this must have taken quite a while.

This space station is about half the size of a pack of cigarettes. All I can say is that this guy has some serious knife skills to build this thing with such precision. It’s amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it.

Slave Leia Flash Drive is Chained to your Data

Mimoco has been offering Star Wars themed flash drives for a long time now. In fact, the latest batch of five themed flash drives is the eighth series to come from the company. I happen to think this series has what might be the coolest of all the Star Wars Mimobot flash drives the company has ever offered.

leia drive

Any male geek out there who is a fan of Star Wars probably remembers one specific scene from Return of the Jedi and that would be the scene where Princess Leia is clad in a gold bikini and chained to Jabba the Hutt.

slave leia mimobot

Mimoco is offering that Slave Leia flash drive complete with a chain around her neck and a bikini top. Granted the curved nature of the flash drive makes slave Leia a bit more portly than she was back in the 80s.

The series also includes a Jabba the Hutt flash drive, Admiral Ackbar flash drive (It’s a trap!), and Luke Skywalker Jedi drive. While that Princess Leia flash drive is most appealing to me, anyone intent on collecting these Mimobots want to keep an eye out at San Diego Comic-Con for a very limited edition Biker Scout drive. Only 1000 of those will be made and they will only be available at Comic-Con. The drives are available in 8 GB to 64 GB capacities here.

Death Star Ice Cubes Seem Ridiculously Easy for Rebels to Destroy

I always thought that the fact that the original Death Star had a giant weak spot in the middle that made it blow up was stupid. You’d think they’d design these things to be less susceptible to attack. But instead of improving upon the original design, the Japanese have gone ahead and made a Death Star that can be demolished by simply dropping it on the ground – or exposing it to heat. Yep, what you’re looking at here is the official Death Star ice cube sphere.

death star ice cube 1

The guys at Kotobukiya have created this special round ice tray which can cast a perfect replica of the original Death Star. Just snap the two halves together, pour in your water, and freeze. You’ll soon have your very own icy Death Star, measuring in at about 60mm in diameter (~2.36 inches.) That’s way easier than having to hire a clone army to build one for you.

Kotobukiya plans on releasing the silicone ice mold this August for ¥1050 (~$13 USD), and I’m hopeful they’ll start to show up outside of Japan shortly thereafter. It’s like the Death Star and Hoth got together and had a baby! Isn’t it darling?

Classic Sci-Fi Scenes Get the LEGO Treatment

Official LEGO Star Wars sets have been around since 1999, but what our other geek needs? Where is our Blade Runner? Or TRON? Why is there no Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy set? LEGO, you are missing out on all of my money. Thankfully, The Living Brick’s “Mi-Fi“ Contest fulfills some of these dreams.
Tatooine
All the entries are in for the “Mi-Fi” contest, and the results are very very awesome. In addition to new scenes from Star Wars, there are LEGO-fied versions of TRON, The Matrix, Back to the Future, Avatar and many more! There’s even a tribute to Spaceballs.

DeLorean Limo, Drive to the Future in Style

Parking? Where we’re going we don’t need to park. When going to the future, you might as well travel there in style, with this stretch DeLorean limo. The only problem is, getting it up to 88 MPH in the first place. And does a DeLorean limo need two (ore more) flux capacitors?

DeLorean Limo Drive to the Future in Style
Now you can bring all of your friends to the future and really mess things up good. And you also have plenty of room to bring back souvenirs for your other friends. Like me. I will take a hoverboard. Judging by all of the DeLoreans in that room, the future is going to be one hell of a traffic jam. I think I might just stay home and watch the DVD.

The DeLorean limo was made by Rich Weissensel, and you can find out more about the build here. Here’s a couple of bonus pics for you to enjoy…

Doctor Who TARDIS Quilt Surprisingly Not Made from the Fabric of Time

If you are a Doctor Who fan and are getting married, I hope you have a friend like graverobbergirl who created this TARDIS-themed quilt for her friend’s wedding present. She is a very good friend, indeed.
Tardis quilt
It features an swirling TARDIS surrounded by a whole mess of Daleks. Plus there’s a star field border on the outside. This queen-sized quilt measures 92″ x 92″ and is done in a pieced Irish Chain pattern. It was hand-quilted and machine-quilted, along with hand-applique and hand-embroidery.

The lucky couple will sleep just fine at night with this quilt keeping them warm. No doubt they will dream of Daleks and adventures on far away worlds. He will be the Doctor and she the companion. May they be happy for many years.

Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut Lands

If you’re an Xbox 360 gamer that has a copy of Mass Effect 3, there’s new download content now available. The free download of Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut went live today and weighs in at a hefty 1.85 GB in size.

me 3 end

The content is the expanded ending for ME3 with additional scenes and an extended epilogue. That extended epilogue reveals the impact of Shepard’s choices on the future of the galaxy. That’s all EA and BioWare says about the content, and you’ll have to play it for yourself to find out how it ends.

I still can’t believe all the ruckus the ending of this video game caused. It’s not as if Shepard hasn’t come back from the dead before.
