Body Language as an Art Form

You can tell a lot about a person’s mood or disposition by observing his or her body language. For example, when a person’s pissed off or annoyed at you, then their arms are most likely crossed over their chest.

Aside from their moods, you can also surmise a few things about the person based on how they move. For example, dancers are usually more graceful in their movement and poses, like the dainty hand position you see below.

Wearable SculptureOf course, their hands get into position without the metal guide that you see above. That metallic thing you see, however, is a part of artist Jennifer Crupi’s series of wearable sculptures and it’s called “Ornamental Hands.” This and the other pieces in the series explore human nature and highlight communication by looking at a person’s body language and gestures.

My favorite would have to be the “Empathy Table.” It’s basically a table with indentations on the surface where two people sitting across each other would have to put their hands and arms in, to assume a position of empathy.

Which one’s your favorite?

Google’s Latest Android Statue Is Resplendent in Chrome

Google’s a massive fan of celebrating Android through the medium of sculpture. Its latest, though, is a surprisingly tasteful vision in shiny, shiny chrome, strapped to the side of one of Google’s Mountain View buildings. More »

Solid Ice Toyota Land Cruiser: Insert “In Soviet Russia” Joke Here

For a recent winter ice and snow celebration in the chilly city of Perm,Russia, somebody (presumably from Toyota), built this amazing ride entirely out of ice (plus a few red LEDs.)

I’ve had the opportunity to drive a loaded $80,000+ Land Cruiser, and while it was a great truck, I can tell you that I could probably sooner afford to build one entirely out of ice too. Plus, this one probably gets better gas mileage than the actual suburban assault vehicle.

These Painted Optical Illusions Are Amazingly Beautiful

I love the work of Shintaro Ohata. His canvases are beautiful on their own but, when he mixes painting and sculpture, he creates optical illusions that take his art to a whole new level. More »

Tetris Sculptures: Get Stacking!

Tetris is an amazing game. I have played that game for hours upon hours on the funky green screen of my old Game Boy. There have been many different versions of the game that have released over the years, but there’s something just so right about the original. The artist behind these sculptures must have felt the same way, with these clearly Tetris-inspired sculptures.

Swedish artist Michael Johansson has created a series of sculptures, which were assembled using a variety of different household items, stacked perfectly in a Tetris-like fashion. He considered form and function while putting these together. They each ended up as nearly perfect cubes, with different textures and materials.

The only thing that makes these un-Tetrislike is that in the game they would have all disappeared by now thanks to the perfectly stacked lines of stuff.

The sculptures are being shown at the Flat Gallery in Milan, Italy through February 24, 2013. So if you happen to be traveling through the area, you should go check these out.

Nikolai Aldunin’s Teeny Tiny Sculptures are So Small They Fit Inside the Eye of a Needle

For a moment there, I wasn’t sure if these sculptures were real, however, they are. These incredibly tiny sculptures were created by an artist using a microscope. They are incredibly detailed for art of this scale, and I imagine need to be quite careful when you’re around it, otherwise it could be crushed or simply blown away.

Russian artist Nikolai Aldunin has to keep his hands perfectly still in order to build his microscopic art. He takes inspiration about a Russian folk tale about Levsha, a left-handed craftsman so talented that the was able to put horseshoes onto a flea, and cues from the Bible.

Nikolai uses syringes, toothpicks, and superglue to make his art, and he works under a microscope as he crafts them.

What Wi-Fi Would Look Like As a Physical Object

Wi-Fi’s all around you. Chances are you’re in the middle of a big blanket of it right now, as you’re reading this. But what does it look like? Well, nothing; it’s invisible. But if it wasn’t it might look a little something like this. More »

Fragment: Dubai’s Unidentified Flying Light Fixture

Nope, this isn’t a UFO, it’s a functional modern art installation that was installed in the atrium of the Level Shoe District, a 96,000 sq. ft. footwear emporium, situated within the Dubai Mall. Of course, something this extravagant would only be in a shoe store in Dubai.

The sculpture, called “Fragment” is a 25-foot-high structure composed of 421 octahedron frames. It was developed by United Visual Artists, and the entire framework was designed to channel light downwards from the glass ceiling above to illuminate the interior during the daytime. When it’s dark, the structure also casts light from hundreds of integrated fluorescent tubes.

It’s definitely an impressive lighting fixture, if you can call it that, though I wouldn’t want to have to change a bulb in it when it burns out.

Fleshlette Body Part Sculptures Are Grotesquely Artsy, or Maybe Just Grotesque

If you thought those Monster Light Switch Plates and Body Part Kitchen Utensils were creepy, then you’ll be horrified at Jonathan Payne’s ‘Fleshlette’ body part sculptures.

fleshlette monster partsThey do resemble the former in style and material, although you can’t use these to replace any light switch plates or cook dinner at home. Instead, these Fleshlettes are strictly meant to be put on display on your mantle, desk, shelves, or anywhere you want to freak people out a bit because of how horrifically deformed and messed up they look.

Apparently, they also happen to be all the rage because Payne Sculptures has temporarily closed up their storefront on Etsy to fulfill their hoard of current orders. Wowza!

Darth Vader Gets Upcycled: The Junk Side of the Force

We’re so used to seeing Darth Vader dressed in all black, but his iconic helmet really works well no matter what color it’s done in. Heck, even Hello Kitty Vader was pretty imposing. But I think that this version of Vader, built out of old bits of reclaimed electronics and other junk looks really awesome.

I kind of wish that when they peeled back the helmet on Vader in Return of the Jedi, this is what they would have found underneath instead of Sebastian Shaw. I can’t tell for sure what all of the components came from, but there’s definitely some old adding machine and typewriter keys, circuit boards, gears and resistors on this handmade helmet.

It was created by Indiana artist Gabriel Dishaw, who has a love for making sculptures from found junk. The Darth Vader helmet is selling for $800(USD) over on Etsy now. While that may seem like a lot of money, I’m betting that Vader’s actual helmet cost him just as much.
