We Would Not Have Survived CES Without This Gear

New gadgets take the spotlight at CES. And though we’re occasionally blinded by the bright, shiny things, we know where our loyalties lie. Behind the barrage of posts and sprinting between booths, the real stars of the show are the tried and true bits of gear we’re using behind the scenes. Particularly BorrowLenses.com, who generosity is the reason you get to look at all those pretty pictures. But each of us has our own beloved item—tech or otherwise—that we’ll swear is the only reason we made it out of Vegas alive. Spoiler: There are a lot of batteries mentioned in this post. More »

Seagate Wireless Plus WiFi hard drive hands-on

Seagate certainly isn’t new to the wireless external hard drive business — they released the Satellite drive a couple months ago, and they’re back here at CES 2013 to show off the successor to the Satellite, the Wireless Plus. We ended up getting our hands on the new storage solution to see what this new edition offers.

Essentially, Seagate booted up the storage to 1TB (from 500GB), doubled the battery life (now 10 hours), made it smaller, and kept the price the same as its predecessor ($199). The drive comes with the company’s adapter system, where you can plug in and swap out different interfaces (even Thunderbolt) and use it as a normal external hard drive.

As far as size and weight, the Wireless Plus is still a bit large, but it’s smaller than its predecessor and is only barely larger than Seagate’s regular hard drives. It can also connect up to eight mobile devices over its WiFi network, which by the way creates its own WiFi network to connect to tablets and smartphones, so there’s no need to be around a home WiFi network.

The Wireless Plus comes with a USB 3.0 adapter to use as a regular hard drive, and it’s priced at $199. Pre-orders start today, and the device is expected to ship in 1-2 weeks.

One terabyte of storage space is enough room for up to 500 high-definition movies. The integrated drive also has an internal battery that lasts for up to 10 hours of use per charge. Content on the storage device can be accessed from smartphones and tablets using the Seagate Media app.

The app is available for Apple iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire HD devices. In addition to being able to store and stream video, the device also supports sharing of photos, music, and documents. The storage drive also supports Apple Airplay. The Wireless Plus also supports apps that are available for Samsung’s smart TV and Blu-ray players.

The storage drive features a removable USB 3.0 adapter allowing for quick transfers of large photo, video, and music files. The device also creates its own Wi-Fi network so you can use it to connect to smartphones and tablets in areas where there is no available Wi-Fi connection. The Seagate Wireless Plus device is available now for $199.99.

Seagate Wireless Plus: HDD That Matches Your Tablet’s Battery Life

Seagate is convinced of two things: 1/ that the future of computing is largely going to be mobile and led by tablets and smartphones 2/ that mobile device don’t have nearly enough storage to satisfy the enthusiast market. They are probably right on both counts, especially when it comes to folks who like to walk around with all their music, videos and other content. Seagate Central Storage System

seagate Central Seagate Central Storage SystemAs we switch our lives to the digital world, more and more people would like to have a central repository for their content. Solutions have existed for some time, but for a while, getting a NAS and setting it up properly was out of the reach of the lay person who would rather spend time playing with the tech, than spend time setting it up. To be fair, nobody likes to tinker with router settings – especially when the network works just fine.

Seagate Central is a replacement for the GoFlex Home storage device from last year. It features a faster processor (dual-core) and has more memory (256MB). Just like other Seagate products, this one is optimized for DLNA (for content streaming over the home network) and can have up to 4TB of storage. Interestingly, it has been design to sit next to the Television, like a small set top box. (more…)

Seagate’s $200 Wireless Plus 1TB hard drive streams content everywhere, includes 10-hour battery

Seagate's $200 Wireless Plus 1TB hard drive streams content everywhere, includes 10hour battery

A (very) early slip through the FCC’s database uncovered Seagate’s Wireless Plus drive several months ago, but here at CES, the company is finally ready to take the official wraps off of the aforesaid drive. It’s a portable 1TB affair, shipping with USB 3.0 support and offering up the ability to stream music and video to practically anything courtesy of its inbuilt wireless module and 10-hour battery. In our testing, the unit did everything it promised, but those with an iOS device will enjoy enhanced usability via the gratis app.

In essence, it’s a slimmed version of the GoFlex Satellite from 2011, enabling users to load up bookoodles of content and then create an ad hoc WiFi network in order to stream it to nearby tablets (iPad, Kindle Fire, etc.), phones, Smart TVs and items that support AirPlay / DLNA. While the cloud seems suitable enough for retrieving content, being on a flight to Dubai or roughing it in cellular black hole throws a kink in those plans. And that, friends, is what Seagate hopes will attract you to its newest $200 HDD. The full presser is embedded after the break, and those who are already sold can pick one up starting now at Amazon and Best Buy.

Seagate Wireless Plus Drive Hits The FCC

The FCC has another gizmo that they can play with – the Seagate Wireless Plus Drive, where it has suddenly made an appearance at the US agency without any prior announcement. Just what can we tell about the Seagate Wireless Plus Drive? For starters, it will carry 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connectivity as well as a considerably slicker aesthetics which will surely be pleasing to the eye.

Other than that, there are not that many more details that we can work on, although there was the quick start guide which clearly stated that the Wireless Plus will remain centered on Android and iOS device owners who have this urge to stream media beyond what’s on their internal memory. The clearance from the FCC did not reveal any additional clues as to the amount of storage space it has, and neither do we know when a ship date is on the horizon, but one thing we do know is this – whenever a device hits the FCC, it does not take too long before it arrives on the market. Stay tuned!
