ToeJam & Earl reportedly coming to PS3

It is perhaps one of the greatest cult classics ever released on the Sega Genesis, and one of the most heralded titles that never spawned a successful spinoff or even franchise continuation. We’re talking about ToeJam & Earl, and it looks like it will be re-released for the first time ever on the PS3, as a downloadable promotion along with other vintage Sega games.

The publisher is apparently planning to launch a series of titles called Sega’s Vintage Collection. Jet Set Radio is another of the games allegedly set to launch on the PS3. But it is ToeJam & Earl that is gaining the majority of the attention. It has won all sorts of love for its two-player split-screen adventure gameplay, with randomized settings and goals that assured you’d have a different experience every time you played.

There was a largely unsuccessful sequel that also launched on the Genesis, and then the entire franchise was reborn on the original Xbox with a new game simply titled ToeJam & Earl, but that one was also a commercial flop (though potentially because the Xbox just didn’t have a wide enough audience at the time). Regardless, for fans of the original, this should be very welcome news. Stay tuned for official words from Sega.

Droid X360 PS Vita clone goes for the KIRF prize, antagonizes Microsoft, Motorola and Sony at the same time

Can we establish a KIRF award for Most Likely to Invite Multiple Lawsuits? If so, Long Xun Software would have to claim the statuette for its Droid X360, at least if it dared set foot in the US. This prime example of keepin’ it real fake is even more of a PS Vita clone than the Yinlips YDPG18, but goes the extra mile with a name that’s likely to irk Microsoft, Motorola, Verizon and George Lucas all at once. That’s even discounting the preloaded emulators for just about every pre-1999 Nintendo, Sega and Sony console. Inside, you’ll at least find a device that’s reasonably up to snuff: the 5-inch handheld is running Android 4.0 on a 1.5GHz single-core Quanzhi A10 processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of built-in space, a 2-megapixel camera at the back and a VGA shooter at the front. If the almost gleeful amount of copyright and trademark violation isn’t keeping you from wanting this award-winner, you’ll have to ask Long Xun for pricing and availability.

Sonic 4 Episode 1 now on the BlackBerry PlayBook

Sonic 4 Episode 1Earlier this year RIM announced that the BlackBerry PlayBook would be receiving more games in the future, and one of the promised games was Sonic 4. Well, it looks like the day has finally arrived as SEGA announced on its blog over the weekend that Sonic 4 Episode 1 has arrived on the PlayBook. Sonic 4 Episode 1 marks the blue hedgehog’s first appearance on the RIM tablet. So for all you PlayBook owners who have been envious of your friend’s Android tablet, you don’t have to be anymore.

If you’ve played Sonic before you’ll know what to expect, the familiar running, jumping, Sonic Spin Dash, golden rings, Eggman, and running circles around your foes – it’s all there. Sonic 4 Episode 1 is available now from the BlackBerry App World (worldwide except in Japan) and will set you back $6.99. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Sonic Hello Kitty Should Sell Out Speedily

Although he’s still a legend among fans of platform games, Sonic the Hedgehog hasn’t exactly had a great run in recent years. Perhaps some help from another famous mammal could boost his ratings?

sonic hello kitty

This kawaii mashup is the first of Sega and Sanrio’s character collaborations. Sonic Hello Kitty will first be released in Japan, particularly at the reopening of Sega’s Joyopolis amusement park in Tokyo. The hedgehog-cat will then make its way throughout the world by summer next year, along with the other mashups. I’m looking forward to Hangyodon Seaman. Actually I’m not.

Mega Man and Sonic to team up for a comic crossover

Mega Man SonicIf you’re a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man, you’ll be pretty pleased to know that there’s going to be a crossover series featuring the two beloved blue heroes.  According to reports online, it will be a 12-part series that is based on Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man and Sonic Universe. No word on what the storyline is going to be or how the crossover happens, but I suspect that will happen at the San Diego Comic Con this week.

There are a number of similarities between both character’s worlds, namely robotic enemies and antagonists with moustaches, so it’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out. And if the comics do well enough, we can only hope it’ll pave the way for a video game (I mean come on – who wouldn’t play a Mega Man X Sonic game??!). Keep your eyes and ears peeled as more details shall be revealed in the future.

Massive video game collection nets $1.2 million on eBay

To most of us, having a ridiculously large video game collection that spans multiple console generations is merely a pipe dream. For one eBay user, not only did that dream became a reality, but it’s now become a source of financial security, as a significant portion of his huge video game collection recently sold for more than $1.2 million on eBay.

The seller in question is 32-year-old Andre from south France. The collection he recently posted on eBay is likely the largest video game collection ever to grace the auction site, containing thousands upon thousands of video games from past generations. In fact, whoever purchased this massive collection will be getting every game ever released for Nintendo consoles ranging from the original Famicom all the way up to the Gamecube, along with all of the games released for every Sega system (eat your hearts out, Dreamcast fanboys). To make the deal even sweeter, many of these games are still factory sealed.

Andre tells the LA Times that he’s always selling video games on sites like eBay, but this is the biggest collection he’s sold so far. This particular collection took him 15 years to build, he says, and provided he gets his money, it will be taking a trip across the Atlantic to Canada. The cost for such a trip? $1,230.70, which is admittedly chump change considering the buyer already has to shell out $1,230,699.99 for the lot. Here’s hoping that Andre just made a deal with a serious buyer.

Be an Instant Collector with This Million Dollar Videogame Collection

Are you interested in becoming a videogame collector? What if I told you that you could become one of the top collectors with just a single purchase? I’m not talking about one rare game or console. I’m talking about 22 complete sets of rare games and consoles. And then some.

22 complete sets video game auction

eBay seller collectors_king is currently auctioning off the sets as a bulk purchase. It includes complete collections of past games and hardware from Nintendo (Famicom, Super Famicom, Virtual Boy, N64, DD 64 and Gamecube), Sega (Master System, Mega Drive, Game Gear, 32X, Mega CD, Saturn and Dreamcast), PC Engine and the Pioneer Laseractive, a system only collectors could love.

Bidding for this set of sets starts at €999,999.99 (~$1.2M USD) on eBay. You can also inquire about buying just one of the complete sets, which technically still makes you an accomplished collector. As gameSniped noted, this is mainly a publicity stunt by collectors_king to attract people to his store, but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone actually buys it. Stranger things have happened.

Sega’s Aliens: Colonial Marines to scrap female characters

There’s a new Aliens video game in the works, and it will feature an all-male cast. Brian Burleson, a producer on the upcoming game Aliens: Colonial Marines, said in a recent live chat with fans that there will be no playable female characters in the game. This is of course at odds with the storied “Aliens” legacy.

Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford wrote on the official Sega blog when the game was announced that Aliens “inspired a generation. We can see all around us the clear and profound impact the films have had on our popular culture and our collective image of science fiction.” He admitted that the release of the movie Prometheus – by the same man who created Aliens – made the alien mythos alive and interesting again, making the new Aliens game even more relevant.

“Our vision is for the game to be fully featured with an exciting, suspenseful, thrilling and action packed narrative campaign that can be played alone or cooperatively combined with a robust competitive game where human players can take on the roles of Colonial Marines or Xenomorphs and do battle online,” Pitchford continued. Apparently, though, the team was not very concerned about keeping true to the film franchise, in which there are plenty of integral female characters. There is now an online petition to get Sega to reverse course and add a strong, playable woman character to the game. It was set up with a goal of 1,000 signatures and already has received more than 2,000.

SEGA reboots NiGHTS into dreams for Xbox, PS3 and PC

Retro games being rebooted for today’s platforms are something of a trend at the moment, and SEGA is bringing back one of the most-loved Saturn titles, NiGHTS into dreams. The relaunch will see the graphics given an HD update, with the title arriving through Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360, on the PlayStation Network, and for Windows as a digital download in the fall.

“The SEGA Saturn offered many unique gaming experiences, and NiGHTS into dreams stands out as one of the most recognizable titles that found a home on the system,” Chris Olson, Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA said of the re-release. “We’ve gotten a lot of requests about this game over the years, and are very happy to be able to give both former Saturn owners and new players a chance to play it in its most beautiful form to date this autumn.”

NiGHTS into dreams was originally released in 1996 and sees players enter a 3D dream world, flying or performing acrobatic stunts to reclaim “Ideya”, or the personalities of sleeping humans. SEGA’s new version of the title will keep the gameplay, but upgrade the graphics to HD and 16:9 to suit modern TVs.

Since social is now important in gaming, there’ll also be support for leaderboards, trophies, and achievements. Best of all, if you’re feeling really old-school, you can turn off the fancy new HD effects and switch back to the original Saturn Mode.

No word on how much NiGHTS into dreams will cost when it arrives in a few months time.
