30 Years Worth of Gaming Products in One Massive Auction: Over 9000-in-1

We’ve featured a handful of videogame collections for sale, but this one takes the cake. eBay member videogames.museum is selling what amounts to uhm, a videogame museum. Hundreds of consoles, thousands of games and hundreds upon hundreds of accessories and promo items.

The collection includes more than 330 consoles, from the Atari 2600 to the current generation consoles and everything in-between, including rare variants as well as obscure flops like the Virtual Boy, the Gizmondo and the Nokia N-Gage. There are also more than 6,850 games; the seller claims that he has completed all the games from some franchises, including Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Castlevania, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Sakura Wars and Super Robot Taisen. There are also controllers, action figures, magazines, strategy guides and countless other stuff.

If you still don’t appreciate just how insane this collection is, videogames.museum has this to say: “I spent the last two months of my life taking pictures and making lists, working about eight hours a day just in order to make an inventory and to figure out what I have. Even now after all the time spent checking things I’m not sure to have included all in the lists…” You can download that list as a pdf file. It is 135 pages long.

Videogames.museum is asking at least $550,000 (USD) for all of these goodies. He may also be persuaded to sell off the items per lot, but he’d really rather sell them as one package. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if he’ll gladly pay anyone who’ll get the N-Gage off his hands. You can check out a lot more pictures of the collection on his Imageshack account.

Sonic the Hedgehog Cartridge Soap Scrubs off the Stench of Eggman

After a hard day of spiraling through loops and collecting rings, it’s time for a good shower. A hedgehog can get pretty dirty running around all those 16-bit landscapes. This Sonic the Hedgehog soap should help. Forget inserting it in your console. Instead, insert it in your armpits and other crevices to get squeaky clean.
sonic soap This one is grape soda scented. Supposedly this soap will make your hands soft, which should help you interact better with your controller. Just don’t try jamming it into your SEGA Genesis unless you want a nasty surprise.

This neat soap shaped was made by Digitalsoaps, and will cost you just $7(USD) – which is actually a little more than a used Sonic the Hedgehog cartridge.

JXD S7300 HD Gamepad2: Best Handheld Gaming System Yet?

In the market for a serious portable gaming machine? While you might have your eyes set on Nvidia’s upcoming Project Shield, here’s a very capable system you can buy right now. The JXD S7300 HD Gamepad2 is a power-packed portable that’s ideal for playing both retro emulated games and today’s latest Android titles.

jxd s7300 handheld 1

The just-released Android 4.1.1-based handheld offers dual, true analog sticks, a real D-pad, dual shoulder buttons, Start, Select and ABXY face buttons, so it’s perfect for controlling just about any game you can throw at it. It’s got an ample 7-inch 1024×600 display, which also supports 5-finger multitouch. It’s also got the requisite 3-axis motion sensors for games that depend on those controls. It includes software for mapping buttons and joysticks to your Android touchscreen games as well. Dimensions for the handheld are 9.5″(W) x 4.77″(H) x 0.56″(D) – about the size (but not the thickness) of the Wii U GamePad, and it weighs 0.90 pounds – about mid-way between the weight of an iPad Mini and an iPad 4.

jxd s7300 handheld 2

It comes pre-loaded with full-speed emulators for the original Sony PlayStation, Neo-Geo, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, NES (Famicom), Super Nintendo (Super Famicom), Sega Genesis (Mega Drive), and Capcom CPS1/CPS2 systems. But since it’s running Android, it’s easy to add more emulators, like MAME4droid. It even comes with Superuser pre-installed, so you can root the system in seconds and install pretty much anything you want on it.

jxd s7300 handheld 3

Under the hood is an Amlogic MX dual-core chipset (Cortex A9 CPU, ARM mali400 GPU), running at 1.5GHz, and 1GB of system RAM. Connectivity is 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and “external connection to Ethernet and 3G” whatever that means – presumably via its USB 2.0 port. It’s unclear if it supports Bluetooth though. And while it can’t wirelessly send content to your HDTV, it does have an HDMI output, so you can mirror its display to your big screen in full 1080p resolution. It’s even got a small 0.3MP user-facing camera for video chats, and true stereo speakers. You can check out all the detailed system info below (the 976×600 screen resolution reported is because AnTuTu doesn’t take into account the height of the title bar.)

jxd s7300 handheld internals

Here’s a video showing the system emulating the N64 classic Super Mario 64 at a buttery-smooth frame rate:

And if you’d like to play something more modern, how about Shadowgun – with physical joysticks and buttons?

The guys over at WillGoo are now stocking the JXD S7300, where it sells for $165.99(USD), or you can grab a bundle with a 32GB SD card for $186.99. Currently, the white model is sold out, but you can still get one in black (though it has a textured finish unlike the white one.) You can also pick up a pair of them for just $299.99, which might be cool since the system supports local Wi-Fi multiplayer.

Seems like this thing is pretty loaded for the price, never mind the fact that it works as a full Android Jelly Bean device, complete with web browsing, media playback, apps, etc. If you decide to buy one, there’s already a good discussion board for the JXD S7300 going on over at Dingoonity, so you can find out the scoop from others who have purchased or who are interested in the handheld.

New Sonic Game Rumored For Announcement Next Month

Sonic Generations Nintendo 3DS Special Stage Screenshots Banner 600x234 515x200 New Sonic Game Rumored For Announcement Next MonthSonic is one of the iconic games of our time, along with Mario and Zelda just to name a few, and it looks like just like the Mario and Zelda series, Sonic has no intentions of fading into quiet obscurity because thanks to new rumors, it seems that SEGA is set to announce a new Sonic game come February! According to the rumors, this particular game has been in development before Sonic Generations which is interesting because supposedly this particular Sonic game will be available on pretty much every platform. This includes the Nintendo Wii U, the Sony PlayStation 3, the Microsoft Xbox 360, the Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita, the PC and even next-gen consoles.

The game is expected to feature 20 three-act stages, multiple playable characters to choose from and both 2D and 3D levels. A teaser for the game will also be expected to be launched on the 2nd of February, with the full reveal of the game to follow shortly after. Rumors are also suggesting that the game will ultimately be released sometime in September. We suggest taking this with a grain of salt for now, but if you’re a huge fan of the Sonic franchise, be sure to check back with us in the next couple of weeks where hopefully we will have more to share.

THQ assets auctioned off, employees say farewell

A letter sent out to THQ employees today from the company’s CEO Brian Farrell and president Jason Rubin spell out everything that has happened with the game studio after its bankruptcy filing a while back. Essentially, THQ’s multiple studios have been broken apart, and its games have been sold off to various other publishers.

THQlogo1

According to the letter, Sega has bought Relic Entertainment (makers of the Company of Heroes series) for $26.6 million, THQ Montreal was bought by Ubisoft for $2.5 million, Evolve (a game currently in development at Turtle Rock Studios) was bought for $10.89 million by Take-Two Interactive, and Volition, Inc. (makers of the Saints Row series), as well as Metro, was bought by Koch Media for $22.31 million and $5.88 million, respectively.

Furthermore, Homefront (which is planned to get a sequel) was bought by Crytek for $544,000, and a South Park license was sold to Ubisoft for $3.27 million. Some THQ assets, however, including their publishing businesses and some other intellectual properties will be held onto for a while as a part of the company’s Chapter 11 case, but they plan to find buyers eventually.

So, what does this mean to all of the THQ employees? Most of the employees of the divisions that were bought out will most likely be offered employment by the new owners. Then again, it’s very possible that the new owners will make some changes, and it may turn out that they don’t need all of the workers, but employees should find out in a couple of weeks whether they have jobs or not.

Unfortunately, employees of divisions that were not included in the auction sale will lose their positions, and it turns out that many of them are taking to Twitter to express their grief, but to also think back on the time they spent with THQ, while others are begging for a job over the social network. It’s certainly a sad day for THQ, as well as gaming as a whole. THQ has been a big part of the gaming industry, and while many of its studios and games will continue on, we’ll miss seeing the THQ branding on all our video games.

The Cave Release Date Announced

If you pay attention to all the game announcements made at E3 each year, you may remember the cool looking adventure game from SEGA and Double Fine Productions called The Cave. Now that we’re all burnt out on our holiday game purchases, we could use another good game early in 2013. Thankfully, you won’t have to wait long to play this one, from the guys behind the classic Psychonauts.

thecave

In the highly-stylized, side-scrolling adventure game, players will choose three uniquely-skilled characters from seven available and then descend into a cave to explore. During their journey, players will find an underground amusement park, a medieval castle, and even a nuclear missile.

SEGA has announced that The Cave will be available on January 22 for PlayStation gamers via the PlayStation Network and on the Nintendo Wii U the same day. Xbox 360 gamers and PC gamers will have to wait one day extra for the game’s release on January 23. PC gamers will be able to get the game via Steam. The Cave will cost $14.99(USD) or 1200 Microsoft points.

The Cave launches January 22

One of the more interesting games for fans of adventure titles that turned up at E3 2012 was called The Cave. The game is from Sega of America in partnership with Double Fine Productions. The game was created by legendary designer Ron Gilbert.

thecave

Sega has announced this week the official launch date for the video game, and that launch date will depend on which game console you plan on using. The game will be available on January 22 via the PlayStation Network and the Nintendo eShop for the Wii U. If you want the game on the Xbox 360, you have to wait until January 23.

Sega is also offering the game via Steam for computer gamers on January 23. The game will only be available as a digital download and will cost $14.99 or 1200 Microsoft points. If you’re not familiar with game developer Ron Gilbert, he and Double Fine Productions were behind Psychonauts and Brutal Legend.

The game will have players assembling a team of three from seven available adventurers. Each of the available characters has unique personalities and stories. Once you choose your team, you head off into the depths of The Cave to explore locations including a subterranean amusement park, a medieval castle, and a ready to launch nuclear missile.

Best Arcade Cabinet Ever Has 55-inch Screen, Plays Over 50,000 Games

I’ve always wanted an arcade cabinet in my house so I could play all of the classic arcade games like they were meant to be played. But I keep putting off the purchase because I have more important things to do with my money, like pay for food and my mortgage. Still, if I ever have the money lying around, I’ll definitely bite the bullet and buy one. And if I hit the lottery, I know exactly which machine I’m buying.

jace hall arcade cabinet 1

This extraordinary arcade cabinet was built by Jack Thompson and the crew at ArcadesRFun with a massive Samsung 55-inch LED/LCD Smart TV, and full controls for up to four players. It’s also got a second 37″ LG marquee display at the top so it can display different images up there during gameplay.

jace hall arcade cabinet 2

It’s got every controller you can dream of, including RGB LED ball top joysticks, RGB LED buttons, an RGB LED trackball (perfect for Marble Madness, Missile Command and Golden Tee), a true 4-way stick for certain games like Q*bert, and dual spinner controls for games like Tempest and Arkanoid, which can be swapped with tiny metal steering wheels for racing games. It’s also pre-loaded with the awesome Hyperspin UI, so it’s easy to flip between games on just about any system you can imagine.

jace hall arcade cabinet 3

Under the hood, this beast is powered by a Dell Alienware Aurora R4 PC w/i7 3.9GHZ six core CPU (overclocked to 4.1GHz), with 16GB RAM, 2 – 2TB hard drives and a 3GB AMD Radeon 7950 Video card. It’s also got a Blu-ray player. Audio is provided by a powerful 232 Watt Corsair Gaming Series PC speaker with a “giant” subwoofer. And in case playing games on MAME, MESS and other software emulators isn’t enough for you, it’s also got a PS3, Nintendo Wii, and Xbox 360 w/Kinect pre-installed. You’ll also be able to play console games using the wireless Xbox 360 gamepads.

jace hall arcade cabinet 4

You can also select from other custom controls, such as a Discs of TRON style flight stick (also great for games like Zaxxon), dual light guns, and a special push-pull spinner (also needed for Discs of TRON and its pesky custom controls.)

The original one of these machines was built as a custom commission project for Monolith Games/HD FILMS founder/IGN host Jace Hall, who wanted a single gaming system which could “play every known game ever made.” While I’m not certain that you could play all of these on it, it’s got over 50,000 games covered between all of the emulators and physical game systems inside. It’s unclear exactly what the differences are between the model you can purchase and Jace’s original – its creators only say that it’s “slightly scaled down.”

Here’s a video of the original system. Jump to about 1:10 to see the machine in action:

So how much does all of this arcade and console gaming goodness cost? Well, bust out your 401Ks, because this bad boy is selling for a whopping $19,995(USD) over on eBay. If you’re serious about buying one, ArcadesRFun has a demo unit available in New Jersey. And if you can’t afford $20k, but you still want a cool arcade cabinet, be sure to check out their website, where you can get into a smaller 32-inch, 2-player system for under $3k, or an incredible virtual pinball machine, complete with force feedback, for about $8k.

SEGA and Creative Assembly to work on Warhammer games

SEGA and Games Workshop have inked a deal to bring Warhammer games to market, with studio Creative Assembly responsible for developing multiple titles in 2013 and beyond. Creative Assembly is currently working on Total War: Rome II as well as an Alien-based title, and has said it will bring a new team to bear on the Warhammer project.

“ The incredibly rich and detailed Warhammer world is something we grew up with, and has left an indelible imprint on us as both designers and gamers” Creative Assembly studio director Tim Heaton said of the agreement. “We’ll be doing the Warhammer universe justice in a way that has never been attempted before.”

Details of what, exactly, the games will consist of are sparse, though given the Total War series blends both high-level strategy and the ability to dive deep into the battlefield, it looks likely that the huge armies of Warhammer characters will be coming to life in a similar way.

It’s not the first time Games Workshop titles have jumped from the physical game table to digital. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine was released in 2011, for Windows, PS3, and Xbox 360, featuring characters and themes from the Warhammer 40k universe. Warhammer: Mark of Chaos, meanwhile, featured the classic fantasy setting in a 2006 title for Windows.

An ongoing project by BioWare Mythic and EA also sees the Warhammer universe open up as a multiplayer online game. Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes went into public beta earlier in 2012.
