Seidio unveils VITREO shatterproof glass covering for iPad

If you have an iPad and want to keep it looking good, odds are you’re using some sort of screen overlay to keep it from getting scratches. The problem with most screen overlays is that they are made from some sort of adhesive film. That film can be difficult to place on the screen of the iPad smoothly and often those films start to peel away in short order, leaving bubbles on your screen.

A company called Seidio has announced a new screen protector specifically designed to fit the third and fourth-generation iPad and iPad 2 screens. This screen overlay is made from tempered shatterproof glass rather than a sticky adhesive sheet. The high-grade tempered glass has a hardness rating of 9H.

That reading means that you can prevent damage to the screen of your iPad in the event of a drop and it will prevent scratches. The VITREO glass overlay is designed to absorb impact to safeguard your tablet. The tempered glass is also covered with an oleophobic coating to make it resistant to smudges and fingerprints.

The tempered glass is designed to cover the entire iPad screen, but won’t interfere with touch functionality. The best part about glass overlay is that it won’t bubble or peel away from the screen, and it’s easy to install and remove. With the glass overlay installed on the iPad, it adds 0.55 mm in thickness to the tablet. The glass overlay attaches to the iPad screen using an included silicone adhesive, and it leaves no residue behind when removed. The VITERO overlay is available now for $69.95.

Seidio OBEX case for the Galaxy S3

So you have decided to get yourself a spanking new smartphone, and have made up your mind to roll with Samsung and their Galaxy S3 this time around after being stuck on Apple’s ecosystem for a fair number of years already. Well, to make sure that you are able to eke out the most from the Samsung Galaxy S3, accessorizing it might be a good idea – and getting a decent protective case for the Galaxy S3 makes perfect sense. The Seidio OBEX case for the Galaxy S3 does seem to be a pretty decent, although some say that it is rather high end, case for the handset. The thing is, the Seidio OBEX case was specially designed to be far tougher than your average phone case, so it makes perfect sense to give a premium handset the best protection you can possibly afford.

The Seidio OBEX case has started to ship, where it is said to deliver the “ultimate protection” against unforeseen circumstances such as drops from butterfingers like me, as well as external elements like water snow, mud, dust and sand. There must be a reason why this puppy was named OBEX, where it is actually Latin for “Barrier” – how fitting, considering it does its best to ensure the safety of your spanking new Galaxy S3.

David Chang, CEO of Seidio, said, “We’ve [Seidio] spent months carefully designing the OBEX, and putting it through a series of rigorous tests. Combining the finest materials, advanced protection technology, and a meticulous design- we are confident that the OBEX will completely safeguard the Galaxy S III anytime, anywhere.”

The Seidio OBEX is said to be waterproof, where it not only meets but exceeds the IP68 rating, literally allowing you to immerse the Samsung Galaxy S3 in water up to 2 meters deep for half an hour, without having your flagship device short circuiting or experiencing anything untoward. After all, water and electronics have never been the best of friends. The waterproof membranes are said to guarantee external matter will be unable to penetrate the phone’s speakers or microphone, affecting sound quality.

The asking price for the Seidio OBEX case for the Galaxy S3 is $79.95 – rather pricey, but at least it is cheaper than buying a new phone when you accidentally let your Galaxy S3 sleep with the fishes.

Introducing Engadget's next giveaway Five iPhone 5s in five days!

A lot of you out there have been anxiously awaiting the holidays, and — more importantly — an excuse to get your hands on the latest iPhone. In fact, the demand is so high that Apple is still experiencing inventory shortages. We don’t want that little niggle getting in your way, of course, so we’ve teamed up with five different companies to get you set up with an iPhone! So here’s the deal: beginning Monday, we will begin one new iPhone 5 contest every day through Friday. Some of the contests will feature the actual phone (carrier branding may vary), while others will offer an Apple Store gift card to cover the cost of buying one without a contract.

You can enter each individual contest once, giving you five separate opportunities to win over the course of the next week. So be on the lookout starting Monday, and make sure you come back every day to increase your chances of winning! Below you’ll find the companies involved, so that way you know exactly who to thank for your new toy. This post is not a contest, by the way, so leaving a comment here won’t enter you to win. Just make sure you’re back here bright and early on Monday — believe us, there will be plenty of other awesome news to check out that day while you’re here.

Note: this next week is going to be a pretty hectic one, so we’re going to keep each contest open for five days rather than the usual two.

Seidio OBEX case for the Samsung Galaxy S3

If you are part of the Samsung camp and have a healthy respect for Apple although you do loathe some of the tactics that Cupertino exhibits in the courtroom, then chances are you also own a smartphone from the South Korean consumer electronics giant – with the flagship Samsung Galaxy S3 being at the forefront of most people’s minds. Well, since you are already in possession of such a fine looking handset, why not make sure you go the whole nine yards and make sure that the smartphone itself is properly protected against the usual – knocks and drops, as well as water? This is where the Seidio OBEX case comes in handy.

Described to be the “epitome of ultimate protection for the Samsung Galaxy S3”, we do wonder just how far such a superlative claim is able to go. Sure, Seidio might be a leading manufacturer of premium mobile technology accessories, but are they really that qualified to deliver a protective case for your precious new Samsung Galaxy 3 to warrant such a description? We will only be able to find out this coming October, but in the meantime, why not let me sit you through the specifications and feature of the Seidio OBEX case so that you are more familiar with it?

David Chang, CEO of Seidio, said, “The OBEX is a game-changer in smartphone protection. We carefully designed this case with the best materials available in order to ensure the [Galaxy] S III would be protected against even the harshest conditions without losing the phone’s functionality. After rigorous testing, we are confident the OBEX lives up to its name in every way.”

OBEX is actually Latin for “barrier,” and it will get to work by absorbing shock thanks to its combination of Polycarbonate and Thermoplastic Polyurethane materials which make up a two-piece structure. This is touted to be the ideal design to deliver protection for the Galaxy S3 from rough, daily use and drops from extreme heights. So far, the OBEX case did far exceed the requirements set forth by the MIL-STD-810G test which evaluates the case from 6-foot drops at multiple angles.

Not only that, the David Chang, CEO of Seidio will also prevent the Galaxy S3 from outside elements such as water, snow, mud, dust, and sand amongst others, as it provides a seal at critical points of the smartphone, making sure all possible entries remain blocked to any unwanted particles or liquids. Meeting the IP68 criterion, it is capable of keeping your Galaxy S3 working even when it is completely submerged for up to half an hour in water that is one meter deep. The waterproof membranes guarantee that external matter will be unable to penetrate the phone’s speakers or microphone without losing sound quality.

There is still no word on pricing, but we do look forward to the OBEX case’s release next month. How about you?

Seidio announces Desktop Charging Cradle for HTC devices

The world of smartphone accessories is an interesting one, where many manufacturers zoom in on a particular make and model and start churning them out by the hundreds of thousands, be it cases or screen protectors as well as speaker add-ons. Of course, some third party manufacturers are even more daring, deciding to come up with a case for a yet unreleased device – as this had already happened with the iPhone 5 (or next generation iPhone, depending on how you want to call it). Seidio is much more conservative with their latest device release, announcing the Seidio Desktop Charging Cradle that caters for a range of HTC devices such as the HTC EVO 4G LTE, HTC One X, and HTC One S.

This would mean only the fairly recent and more powerful handsets from HTC are the ones being catered to here – if you are using a mid-range or entry level HTC device, then you can forget about it. Seidio hopes that the design philosophy of timeless and elegant products will be captured by the Desktop Charging Cradle, touting it to be an ideal accessory for the desk of the business professional. Is it really? Only those who have bought and used it are able to tell.

Sporting a unique design which enables one to synchronize and juice up your HTC smartphone simultaneously, it ensures your HTC device will always remain powered up at all times.

David Chang, CEO of Seidio, said, “This charging cradle is the final accessory to round out the full-line of products we [Seidio] offer for the HTC devices. Our goal is to provide our consumers with a complete system solution for their mobile device. The Desktop Charging Cradle works seamlessly with Seidio’s HTC cases and, of course, the smartphone itself.”

What makes the David Chang, CEO of Seidio so different from the other somewhat similar products on the market? For starters, it functions with or without a Seidio ACTIVE or SURFACE case, so you need not worry about removing a protective case while you dock the device, all thanks to a tiny albeit sturdy connector piece. The dock will also be able to hold your smartphone in a horizontal position to deliver a perfect viewing angle whenever you want to enjoy movies, pictures and other multimedia formats.

It comes in an all-black cradle with a smooth, matte finish, in addition to Seidio’s signature soft-touch coating. The external layer will ensure the cradle remains clean, resisting fingerprints, dirt and grime, while a discreet power LED light will be located on the back of the unit. You can pick up the Seidio Desktop Charging Cradle for $29.95 a pop.
