Loccit Puts All Your Social Networking Activities in Print

I used to keep a diary until I realized that I was just copying down events and things I said about my day from my social media accounts. Not that I share personal details or too much information online. However, I have realized that it’s easier to sum up my day in 140 characters than spend about 30 minutes a day to write it all down.

Compiling everything and printing a modern diary sounds like hard work, though, which is why I find the concept of Loccit so appealing. It’s an online service that lets you print and bind your posts and updates from various social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Loccit ships to Europe and the US, although the prices aren’t going to be so friendly to your wallet: a hardback diary costs £14.99 (~$25 USD), and each page after the twentieth will cost 20 pence (about 32 cents.)

Amazon lockers have been popping up at 7-eleven stores and UK retailers, but now they’re arriving at what seems like a conflicted destination: bricks and mortar (and online) arch-competitor, Staples. The service allows shoppers who missed a delivery to head over to a locker and nab their packages using a 72-hour code, with the host retailer keeping a small fee in return. But there aren’t too many items at Staples that you can’t also find at Amazon, so we hope the office supply giant got a sweetheart deal.

Jolicloud Open Platform arrives, lets developers put any cloud service in one hub

Jolicloud has portrayed itself as a sort of one-stop shop for cloud services and web apps, where a single sign-in keeps us on top of everything. It’s mostly been limited to big-league content as a result, but that’s changing with the new Jolicloud Open Platform. Developers now just have to build JavaScript-based Node.js components that hook their own apps, media and storage into the same central Jolicloud repository we’d use to manage Instagram and Tumblr. More details and full documentation are forthcoming, although the “open” in Open Platform leads us to think there won’t be many technical (or financial) barriers to entry.

AT&T cutting returns and service cancelation period from 30 to 14 days, starting tomorrow? (update: confirmed)

Prone to bouts of buyer’s remorse? Well if you were planning an AT&T flavored purchase, you might want to start the car. A tipster has sent in what appears to be a notice to staff advising that the returns period for equipment and service cancellations will be shrinking from 30 to 14-days — effective tomorrow. Purchases made today would benefit from the longer period, and our tipster claims that there may be a grace period until November where returns could be processed as if still under the original scheme (what sounds, to us, like a courtesy for those who didn’t read the fine print). We don’t have all the fine print, but head past the break for a little more on the specifics.

Update: AT&T has confirmed the policy change to us, noting that it’ll indeed go into effect tomorrow, but won’t affect certain business customers. You’ll find the full response after the break, while we’re getting word on how this will work in California, where 30 return periods are required by law.

MoviePass launches iPhone app and card combo, takes unlimited viewing to all US theaters

While MoviePass was in early beta, it got more than a small amount of pushback from theaters that didn’t like someone changing the price formula without their explicit say-so. The company just found an end-run around that conspicuous obstacle. It’s releasing both an iPhone app and a reloadable card that, when combined, let MoviePass’ effectively unlimited subscription model work at just about any US theater. The app unlocks the card for a specific showing; after that, it’s only a matter of swiping the plastic at a payment kiosk like any old credit card. It’s not as sophisticated as NFC or Pay With Square, to be sure, but it should keep the rude surprises to a minimum. Both the iOS app and the card require an invitation to the $30 monthly service if you’re eager to get watching movies today. If either is too limiting, there’s promises of both an Android app and wider availability in the future.

Allow me to explain how two discussions started off in very similar ways, and ended… shall we say, differently. This is me, attempting to muster any sort of pleasantness in my voice at some ungodly hour of the morning on a Google Voice connection from Dubai back to the US:

“Hey! I’m having to cut a trip short due to an emergency back home. I actually purchased a trip protection plan when I checked out online — would it be possible to provide a refund for this flight now that I need to cancel it?”

From here, I was told that this was too vague. That I would need medical proof of an injury or illness, and that if it were a pre-existing condition — something like reoccurring cancer — that simply wouldn’t do. Oh, and if it’s a home emergency, you’ll need proof from your home insurance company that your abode is “uninhabitable.”

“So… I’m basically hosed here? This trip protection plan doesn’t really protect very much, does it?”

“… Do you want to file the claim?”

“No. That’s okay. Thanks for your time.”

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Tesla details service plans, software updates for Model S

So you drop $50,000+ on a Tesla Model S — then what? The all-electric automaker offered some more details on what folks can expect in the ensuing years on its blog this week, detailing service plans and software updates, and what it’ll all cost. On that latter point, you can expect to pay $600 for a basic one-year service plan, or opt for a four-year package that’ll set you back $1900 — on-site visits are available for an extra $100, or as part of a four-year, $2400 plan that includes unlimited on-site visits. To provide that service, Tesla has also announced that it’s nearly tripling its number of service centers, which it says will mean there’s a service center within 100 miles of more than 90 percent of Model S reservation holders. What’s more, it’s also offered some details on what those owners will see in future software updates, including an optional “creep” mode that will mimic the slow, forward roll of a car with an automatic transmission. Yahoo confirms Mail / Messenger outage, working on a fix

Google Talk and Twitter had their moments last week, and now it’s Yahoo’s turn. As noted by a flood of readers — and confirmed by the company itself — the exclamation marked mail service is currently experiencing some issues. Yahoo Mail is prompting users to accept its terms and then just sort of conking out. We reached out to Yahoo for comment and received the following response:

Yahoo! Mail, Messenger and other areas of Yahoo! may currently be inaccessible or slow to respond to some users in certain locations. We are working to correct the issue and restore all functionality immediately. We know that this may have caused some inconvenience and we apologize to our users who might be affected.

We’ll update you when things are back to normal.

Republic Wireless is finally ready for more customers on its low price cellphone service, announcing today that it’s reopening signups for its beta and offering customers a new phone. The new hardware is the Motorola Defy XT, an Android 2.3 device with a 3.7-inch display, 1GHz CPU, 1650 mAh battery, 5MP camera / VGA front camera, 1GB of ROM and microSD slot. It can be your for $249, which may seem pricey for a Gingerbread phone in 2012, however Republic Wireless’ truly unlimited $19 / month plan hopes to make up for it on the back end. Those who signed up for the service and are slotted in Wave B are welcome, while Wave A customers rocking the launch LG Optimus are being offered $100 off the price of an upgrade to the new phone. Twitter confirms site issues, working to resolve things

It’s a rough day for internet communication. First Google Talk, now Twitter. The microblogging service confirmed that it’s currently having some issues — a fact independently verified by our frustrated staff — adding that “Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.” We’ll let you know when you can safely return to your regularly scheduled tweeting.

Update: Everything seems to be back to normal. You know what to do.

Update 2: Twitter just posted an apology and explanation for the outage on its blog. Turns out, tweets weren’t making their way to the web because both a primary and back-up system in Twitter’s data centers failed simultaneously, leaving us bereft of 140-character nuggets of wisdom for about two hours. Rest assured, VP of Engineering Mazen Rawashdeh and his team have apologized for the inconvenience and are working to prevent the problem in the future.
