Netflix has been lobbying hard for changes to a law that it believed barred it from sharing the videos users watch on social media services, and now the law has changed. After H.R. 6671 passed through Congress last year without objection, President Barack Obama signed it into law today. As it previously existed, the Video Privacy Protection Act would have required users to approve sharing of each title watched in writing. The amendment removes that restriction, and should see the Facebook features already on Netflix internationally available in the US, soon. The house that Zuck built is reportedly in the process of bringing its desktop site’s share feature to mobile, which will allow Facebook users to retweet repost and comment on content from within their news feeds. Currently available on Facebook’s mobile website, this Twitteresque option will soon make its way to the company’s iOS and Android apps. Whenever a person shares something, it will credit the source of the information by attaching the original poster’s name to the status update. It’s too early to tell how the addition of a share button will affect how people “like” posts; however, once this feature becomes widely available to Facebook’s 604 million-plus mobile users, news feeds are likely to be flooded with even more pictures of cats, food and grandchildren than ever before. Bet you didn’t think that was possible, but rest assured it’s a comin’.

Microsoft is already creating a safe, fenced-off area in Windows Phone 8 through Kids Corner, but it’s expanding that to include nearly everyone through Rooms. A rough parallel to Groupme, Rooms lets families, friends or companies share calendars, chats, notes and photos without letting any prying eyes get a peek. And if others aren’t following the Windows Phone way, they can still view some of the content from another platform. There’s no doubt that Microsoft really hopes its communal addition is a way to squeak out an extra phone sale or two from those who like to stick together.

The classic trick to spurring early adoption of a data hotspot service is to share it with others, and NetZero has every intention of being as giving as its precursors. Its new Data Share program lets those who own of the company’s WiMAX devices give away up to 1GB of data every month through Facebook, spread across five friends at 200MB each. Apart from needing NetZero hardware in a coverage area, there’s no financial strings attached — neither the sender nor the recipient needs to adopt more than the free, 200MB per month they already have just for showing up. The real dilemma is managing just who gets the data in the 4G provider’s first come, first served approach to the sharing link that hits friends’ social news feeds. NetZero is no doubt hoping that the ubiquity of the giveaway (and a half-off device sale during October) will put an early end to any rivalries.

You never really know what to expect when two of the bigger names in tech join forces and announce something fresh. In some cases you may see an end result of things like that RAZR i, but when Dropbox and Facebook are involved, you can surely bet it has to do with sharing something with your pals — and such is the case today. Dropbox announced earlier that it’s now allowing folks to share files with their friends inside Facebook Groups, giving users the ability to instantly post anything from notes to videos with a couple of simple clicks. Of course, those on the other side will be able to like what you share, leave comments, as well as be updated automatically as soon as an edit has been made. At the moment, not everyone’s seeing the changes just yet, though Dropbox has said it shouldn’t be too long before most people can spot the new feature.

It might not be the biggest Facebook-photo news of late, but if you like to share your life with the network’s Android app, there’s word of a new feature on trial just for you — photo syncing. Sound familiar? Sure, that’s because you might already be doing something similar with the Google+ app with your very same phone. But, if Facebook is more your jam, then it looks like you might soon be able to shuffle those food pictures up to your profile “automagically.” If you’re worried that you might accidentally share something a little more private, be assured that photos sent to Facebook won’t be public until you decide to share. Also, much like Google’s implementation, you can decide whether to use mobile data or WiFi for uploading, with images that are shared over cellular being crunched down to a smaller size. It seems that this is still in trial though, so don’t despair if you can’t see the option — or perhaps that’s just how you like it. More info at the source.

Shazam doesn’t want to let GetGlue control all our couch potato time — it just rolled out an upgrade to its TV component that lets the mobile app provide social sharing, soundtrack and trivia details for nearly any TV show in the US, not just those deemed worthy of special attention. The app mirrors the program it’s looking at — we’ll see stats instead of IMDb if we’re watching hockey, for example. Whether or not attention is locked on the bigger screen in the living room, Shazam’s little screen is making Facebook more a centerpiece of the experience. Media mavens can comment on friends’ tagging habits and post their own tags to their Facebook timelines for all to see. The wider universe of TV shows should be available today, although we’ll have to wait for an update in the “coming weeks” to broadcast our tastes in media with the rest of the world.
