Legend of Zelda Hylian Shield Backpack: Schoolward Shield

Just as the Hylian Shield – in its many incarnations – has protected Link from countless projectiles and attacks, so will this backpack protect your books, Nintendo handhelds and any stray rupees you find.

Etsy seller Ivana Roso aka pepolina said she sewed the individual parts by hand, then put the backpack together using a sewing machine. She didn’t say what materials she used, although looking at it I think it’s made of synthetic leather.

Life Size LEGO Zelda Hylian Shield: It’s Dangerous to Go Alone! Take Bricks.

This incredible thing is made entirely out of LEGO pieces. This full-sized Hylian Shield from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess has been lovingly recreated by brickbuilders Alyse & Remi otherwise known as Bolt of Blue.

If you have to see this amazing creation in person, you can see it at this years Brickcon in Seattle, WA this weekend. I’m not sure how LEGO pieces it took to create this thing, but it must have been a ton of work. And they clearly have way more talent than I have.

If you are in the Seattle area this weekend check it out and let us know what you thought of it in person.

Superior armor being researched for the US Army

Every single day, there are members of the US Army around the world who get in the line of fire while fulfilling their duty for the country, and needless to say, some of these encounters result in serious injury or even death. The US Army intends to cut down on the mortality rate by handing over $90 million to Johns Hopkins University so that a team of researchers at Rutgers University, the University of Delaware and the California Institute of Technology, accompanying private companies and the military, will work on a new kind of protective armor which has the final goal of reducing body armor weight by 30% while ensuring it is 50% more efficient.

At the end of the day, the ‘perfect’ body armor would be a careful balance of ratio between weight, mobility and protection. Of course, there are some projects in the past that relied on spider silk to create a “bulletproof skin”, but if you are talking about protection from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), then it is safe to assume that nothing at this point in time will be able to protect a soldier as even a tank can be done in by an IED. Of course, Captain America’s fictional vibranium shield does seem to be able to handle anything thrown at it, so until that day arrives, we will just have to keep our fingers crossed that the “superior armor” the US Army is looking for will be conjured up in labs, soon.

ABC S.H.I.E.L.D Series Pilot Being Co-written by Joss Whedon

This is so awesome! When I was growing up, a hot Friday night was watching The Incredible Hulk followed by The Dukes of Hazzard. It’s been a long time since a decent superhero show has been on television, and it looks like ABC is out to remedy that. Reports are coming in that The Avengers/Buffy/Firefly/Dr. Horrible/Angel director Joss Whedon is co-writing a pilot for new superhero TV series.

The series is said to be based in The Avengers universe and called S.H.I.E.L.D. The series is said to follow the secret military law enforcement group with Nick Fury at the helm.

Reports indicate that Joss and his brother Jed are writing the pilot for the show along with help from spouse Maurissa Tancharoen. Whedon might even direct the pilot for the series if his schedule allows. Production for the pilot is set to get underway as soon as possible. ABC is also said to be getting a new TV series based on The Hulk ready as well.

Arduino GSM/GPRS Shield gets helping hand from Telefonica for data, remote control

Arduino with updated GSM Shield for Telefonica

Arduino devices have had the option of a GSM linkup for awhile, but getting that cellular link to truly strut its stuff hasn’t always been easy, even for those of us who’d be inclined to program an Arduino in the first place. Enter Telefonica, which wants to be the backbone of your internet of things. It’s backing a new version of the GSM/GPRS Shield add-on (shown here) by offering both the expected machine-to-machine SIMs for the cellular connection as well as freshly added remote control of the board through the carrier’s BlueVia pages. The Shield itself is getting a quiet upgrade in the process — the software both takes up a smaller footprint and can now talk to the world in the background while the Arduino keeps on keepin’ on. If you happen to be in Berlin, the new Shield is making the rounds at Campus Party workshops until April 25th. Neither side has said how readily available the new part will be available after that; for now, you can familiarize yourself with the current technology at the source link.
