Early-backer GameStick consoles delayed to June, dev units now shipping

Early-backer GameStick consoles delayed to June, dev units now shipping

Fancied PlayJams’ GameStick Android gaming console enough to back it on Kickstarter earlier this year? The good news is that Dev units have been shipping to the roughly 600 who signed up, with the remaining ones set to head out within a week. The bad news? The early-backer versions are now set to arrive at doorsteps in late June instead of April because of high-demand, according to PlayJam. As its latest Kickstarter update details, the units will need stronger tooling than the silicon-based molds of the dev units to ensure that “tens of thousands” of them can be successfully made. Additionally, this will apparently force the company to ship these larger factory yields via sea transport rather than air, which also slows things down.

A case of success causing slowdowns it seems. Hopefully not much longer than these new estimates, too — while this breakout underdog is set to hit retailers like GameStop, that other Android-based console, OUYA, is already shipping out to backers — and its retail units are planned in June. You’ll find the full update from PlayJam at the source link.

Razer begins shipping Edge units to those who pre-ordered this month

Razer begins shipping Edge units to those who preordered this month

Back when the Razer Edge pre-orders kicked off, on March 1st, the company wasn’t quite clear as to when exactly the device would commence shipping to early adopters, only going as far as saying it would be later that very month. Well, the good news is today Razer took to its own Facebook page to announce that its new-era gaming PC is now on its way to folks who put in a pre-order “from the March batch.” Meanwhile, Razer’s hoping other gamers will also shell out the hefty amount of $999-plus for its novel piece of hardware, urging potential buyers on the social network to snag a unit (or two) before they go out of stock — just don’t expect to get a keyboard dock with your order, as the previously reported Q3 availability for this add-on remains intact. Above all, however, it’s a great thing to see that what was once just a project, is now getting ready to arrive at consumers’ doorsteps.

Apple Offers Free Next-Day Shipping On All iPhone Models In U.S.

Apple Offers Free Next Day Shipping On All iPhone Models In U.S.

Let’s just say you happened to catch our coverage of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and you still think the iPhone is the smartphone for you. You could head on down to your local Apple Store or carrier store to pick one up, but in this digital age, there’s nothing quite like being able to order something from the comfort of your living room wearing only boxers. Shopping on Apple’s website would result in a lengthy wait for you to get your iPhone, but the company has improved its shipping method to offer free next-day shipping on all iPhone models in the U.S.

We’re not sure just how long Apple will be offering free next-day shipping to U.S. addresses since they have offered next-day shipping in the past during the holiday season. As of now, Apple limits the number of iPhones you can order to receive next-day shipping to two iPhones, which we’re sure is more than enough for the average iPhone user. But, if you’ve been keeping up with the iPhone rumors, it’s possible Apple wants to offer its free next-day shipping prior to the launch of an additional iPhone. This is purely speculation, but it certainly would make sense.

Peterbilt’s New “Super Truck” Gets 10 MPG—Double the National Big Rig Average

More than two million semis travel some 120,000 miles apiece along America’s arterial highways every year at an average efficiency of just 6 MPG. Six. Miles per gallon of diesel—not even Hummers are that wasteful. However, a new “Super Truck” design by Peterbilt has shown it can go the same distance for half the gas. More »

DropTag tells phones when packages are bruised before they’re opened (video)

DropTag tells phones when packages are bruised before we open them

Many of us have had the misfortune of receiving a package that has been roughhoused in transit, and we might not have even realized it until we burrowed through the cardboard and tape. Cambridge Consultants’ upcoming DropTag might just serve as the insurance we need. The badge can detect a drop or other violent motion, like earlier sensors, but carries Bluetooth 4.0 to transmit data and alerts in real-time to a mobile app, whether it’s on the courier’s smartphone or a tablet at home. As one watch-grade battery could power the sensor for weeks, we could know whether the box took a tumble at the warehouse or at the door — a help not just for customers wanting their items intact, but for companies that can avoid delivering already-broken goods. At less than $2 in raw costs, DropTags would be cheap enough to slap on many packages. We just need Cambridge to line up clients to make this a reality and, just possibly, prevent a few overly hasty couriers from long-bombing our orders.

Pebble smartwatches begin shipping to backers this afternoon, iOS app still pending

Pebble smartwatches begin shipping to customers this afternoon, iOS app still pending

Pebble has just informed backers that the very first orders will begin shipping today, though the iOS app is still pending approval from Apple. In the meantime, Android users will have access to a compatible app in Google Play beginning tomorrow — just in time to start using those freshly unboxed smartwatches. iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users will be able to display notifications and control music in the meantime, though advanced features like watchface and OS updates won’t be possible until the app is ready for download.

Now, a bit more bad news: the Pebble team reportedly jumped the gun on shipment notifications, so even though you may have received word that your watch is on the way, it may not be in the first batch of 500. If you’ve also received a tracking number, however, your device is likely to be in the mail. We’re holding out hope that our Pebbles fall within that latter group — stay tuned for a review just as soon as we’ve had time to put the device through its paces. In the meantime, hit up the source link for some more pics from factory.

The New Backbone of International Trade Is the Single Biggest Movable Thing We’ve Ever Built

You won’t have any trouble finding this Marco Polo in the pool—even with your eyes closed. Five Airbus a380s lined up nose-to-tail still wouldn’t match the length, much less the overwhelming mass, of the world’s largest container ship. More »

Inside UPS’ Worldport: How a shipping titan moves 2,000 packages every 17 seconds

DNP Inside UPS' Worldport facility how one of the world's shipping titans moves 2,000 packages every 17 seconds

Online shopping seems like a straightforward process: hunt down the perfect item, trudge through the checkout pipeline and await a package’s inevitable arrival. The trip between a warehouse and your doorstep, however, involves meticulous organization on a massive scale. In order to pull off such a feat, United Parcel Service (UPS) relies on Worldport in Louisville, Ky.: a 5.2 million-square-foot processing facility that’s capable of sorting up to 416,000 packages an hour. Within Worldport, 70 aircraft docks and 155 miles of conveyor belts await the arrival of packages from over 220 countries and territories. So, what happens when UPS gets ahold of those parcels destined for air delivery? The folks clad in brown took us inside their largest sorting hub to find out.

GeekStuff4U Offers Free Holiday Shipping from Japan!

We feature tons of cool stuff from Japan on Technabob over the years, but one of the big deterrents to picking up some fun and unusual gadgets from the other side of the Pacific Ocean has been the cost of shipping them around the world. Well for a limited time only, our pals over at GeekStuff4U are waiving shipping fees, to bring a little bit of Japanese cheer to the rest of the world this holiday season.

geekstuff4u

From now until December 15th, 2012, GeekStuff4U is offering free international shipping on any item priced at over 5,000 Yen (~$61 USD). Packages will be shipped via EMS, and they’re recommending that you get your orders in by the end of the day on December 13th in your country to get your gifts in time for Christmas.

GeekStuff4U has all sorts of nifty and unusual gadgets and goodies available on their site, and it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for something off-the-beaten-path. Some of my personal faves include the heated USB mouse, the R2-D2 projector, and the mega cockroach backpack.

Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Note II starts shipping

Verizon's Samsung Galaxy Note II starts shipping

If you’ve pre-ordered a Verizon flavor of Samsung’s Galaxy Note II, it’s high time you check your email for a shipping confirmation, as we just received a notice of our own. With two-day shipping on the package carrying our smartphone behemoth, it’s estimated to arrive on November 29th. Presumably, it’ll be available at Big Red’s brick-and-mortar establishments on that same day, but we’ve reached out to Verizon and Samsung for confirmation. In the meantime, you can peep inside your inboxes and let us know in the comments if your hulking handset is on its way as well.
