Sideload iOS Apps Sans Jailbreak
Posted in: Today's ChiliThere were reasons that the Hackulous team shut down their Installous pirated app store at the end of last year, and that could have been a catalyst to see even easier alternatives for side-loading iOS apps make their mark. While some folks with pure intention would not use side-loading to fall into the temptation of pirated apps, how many of us have that kind of self control? A couple of sites such as Zeusmos and Kuaiyong have appeared since the shut down of Installous, and it is interesting to note that both services do not require you to jailbreak the iPhone. Needless to say, you will not be able to pick up either from Apple’s App Store, but fret not – those who have given it a go claim that the installation process is easy peasy.
Apparently, all that is required of you as an iPhone user would be to drop by a website, followed by hitting the Install button – although we could not confirm it on our side. Once done, the Installous replacement ought to make an appearance on your home screen. This seems to be a many-headed hydra in the works, and Apple, despite all of their might, should be unable to stop piracy when enough users have a demand for it. Just one of those facts of life, I guess.

Sideloading apps on Android implies a whole set of security holes, but the new malware scanner included in Android 4.2 could provide a much-needed plug. Talking to Computerworld, Android VP of Engineering Hiroshi Lockheimer revealed that Google’s been analyzing APKs that crop up online, regardless of whether they’re official market apps or not, in order to maintain a growing database of good and bad code. The scanner — shown above — then works in a similar way to the Bouncer on the front gate, comparing all the apps on your phone to that database. The new sentry helps Google build upon other Android 4.2 security features such as an improved app permission screen and a block against apps sending premium SMS messages in the background. On the other hand, some might say that collecting samples of existing malware will never be as powerful as truly understanding its DNA.

BBC iPlayer for iOS update coming with downloads and offline viewing, on Android soon
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe BBC has revealed that an update arriving Tuesday for its iPlayer app on iPhone and iPad will add the ability to download shows for viewing offline, instead of being streaming only. First reported by The Guardian, it will let those with paid up TV licenses load their phones and tablets with plenty of programming to view when and where (including abroad) they want, for up to 30 days or within 7 days of being watched. Those restriction will keep viewers from building up libraries they can truly keep with them indefinitely, and it should be noted that the app will only let users download shows over WiFi for now, not surprising when we remember how long it took to add 3G streaming. Also interesting is the Beeb’s decision not to charge extra for downloads, but we’ll have to wait and see if competitors like ITV follow suit. The app is not live in iTunes yet, but we’ll keep an eye out and let our UK based friends know when it’s available to download. That here in the US we’re (still) waiting for global iPlayer access hasn’t made us jealous at all.
Update: Version 2.0.0 is out, check the gallery for screenshots or the BBC’s blog post for a few more details and stats on how people are using iPlayer.
