Google’s First Nexus 4 Commercial Highlights Google Now During Grammys

While my wife and I were busy watching Once Upon a Time and The Walking Dead last night, it seems everyone else was watching The Grammys. Because of that, it seems we missed out on a commercial for the Nexus 4 that was everyone crowing about it this morning.

Google’s Nexus 4 commercial focused entirely on Google Now, which was introduced as a direct rival to Apple’s Siri. It also marked the first time an Android 4.2 Jelly Bean-powered device was featured in a commercial, giving those who don’t have the latest Android OS and don’t follow tech blogs a glimpse into what’s possible nowadays. Watch Siri Turn Into a Home Automation Master With the Help Of Raspberry Pi

With home automation being all the rage these days, it was only a matter of time before Siri got her little, occasionally holier-than-thou claws into the action. All it took was YouTube user Elvis Impersonator, a Raspberry Pi, and enough trust in Siri’s goodness to believe she won’t devolve into a Hal 9000 wannabe. More »

Siri For Mac Could Appear In OS X 10.9 According To Job Listing

Siri For Mac Could Appear In OS X 10.9 According To Job ListingBack in September of 2012, a patent by Apple surfaced which suggested that perhaps Siri could be coming to Mac OS in the future, and rumors of OS X 10.9 also suggested that Siri and Maps could be integrated into the computer OS as well. As it stands there is no official word from Apple regarding that possibility, but a job listing spotted by Apple Insider has revealed possible plans as well, thus making the rumors and speculation a bit more believable.

The job calls for a Siri UI Engineer and according to some of the qualities the candidate should possess, it reads, “Familiarity with Unix, especially Mac OS X […] Passion for the Macintosh platform and writing simple, elegant software that is easy and fun to use.” Since Siri is currently limited to iOS, the requirement of familiarity with Mac OS X is rather interesting. Obviously no word on if this holds any merit, or when it will launch, but some believe Siri for Mac OS X could be announced for version 10.9. Either way we’ll take this with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Anyone looking forward to having Siri on your Mac?

Apple Calls For New Siri UI Engineer, Suggests Digital Assistant Could Soon Grace The Desktop

Screen Shot 2013-02-05 at 7.33.25 PM

With all the time, money, and embarrassment Apple has offered up on the altar of Siri, it’s only a logical next step to see the virtual personal assistant migrate over to Mac OS X.

The question is not if, but when?

And we may be getting closer, as Apple has listed a job posting looking for a Siri UI Engineer with a few hints at OS X integration.

This isn’t the first we’re hearing of a potential Siri rollout on the desktop level. In November, 9to5mac reported that Siri and Apple maps would be present in the next version of OS X.

The job listing calls for an engineer “responsible for implementing the content that appears within the conversational view.”

They call it a “broad-ranging task,” considering all the various applications Siri must interact with to be useful, and all while conserving the limited resources of mobile devices.

“We take every application that Siri interacts with, distill it down to fundamentals, and implement that application’s UI in a theme fitting with Siri. Consider it an entire miniature OS within the OS, and you get a good idea of the scope!” the listing reads.

Yet, nowhere in the job posting is there mention of iOS specifically. There is, however, mention of Mac OS X. Under key requirements, Apple asks for knowledge of all of Apple’s development APIs (both iOS and Mac OS X), as well as “familiarity with Unix, especially Mac OS X.”

Obviously, the listing is still very ambiguous, but it signals that Apple is beefing up Siri for something new. And as AppleInsider astutely notes, Dictation has already found its way onto the desktop (just like it did on the iPad before Siri showed up in tablet-form).

It all adds up, but we’ll have to wait on Apple’s word before we know for sure.

2013 Honda Accord, Acura RDX And Acura ILX To Get Siri Eyes Free Option

2013hondaaccord.013013 2013 Honda Accord, Acura RDX And Acura ILX To Get Siri Eyes Free OptionSiri Eyes Free is a feature that automobile manufacturers are beginning to install in some of their vehicles. Basically what this does is that it allows drivers to activate Siri on their iPhones with a press of a button and talk to it while keeping their eyes on the road, hence “Eyes Free”. Considering that we are starting to see more smartphone integration in our vehicles these days, we guess this is one of the features that can be expected, and the good news is that if GM’s cars aren’t to your liking, Honda has revealed which of their vehicles will be coming with the Siri Eyes Free feature, which includes the 2013 Honda Accord, Acura RDX and Acura ILX. The partnership with Honda was revealed last year but it is only now that we know which particular models Siri Eyes Free will be installed in. This is an option that can be chosen by potential buyers and integrates with the HondaLink and AcuraLink entertainment systems. It is unclear as to how much this option will cost buyers, but it is one of the options out there for those interested.

Honda and Acura to take advantage of Apple Siri Eyes Free tech

The push is on for many automakers to add new hands-free technology to their vehicles to help drivers keep their eyes on the road. Some automakers, such as Ford, have had hands-free communication systems and their vehicles allowing drivers to control certain functions using the voice for a long time. Other automakers have been slower to adopt such technology.

With the federal government now pushing to reduce distracted driving, automakers are rushing to add new technology to their vehicles. One of these new technologies is Apple’s Siri Eyes Free technology. We looked at the Siri Eyes Free system in the past in the Chevrolet Sonic. Automaker Honda has now announced that some its Honda branded vehicles and Acura vehicles will get Siri Eyes Free technology in 2013 models.

It appears that Honda’s adoption of this technology was last minute; support isn’t baked in as a factory installed option. Honda is offering Siri Eyes Free support as a dealer installed option on the 2013 Accord and on the Acura RDX and ILX models. Honda also says that later this year iPhone owners using iOS 6 or higher will be able to use Siri to perform a number of tasks in the vehicle.

Honda isn’t clear if these tasks are something special that it has cooked up or if these features are basic Eyes Free capabilities such as sending text messages, making phone calls, and playing music. Honda says that it has reengineered software and its vehicle infotainment systems to integrate Siri Eyes Free using its Bluetooth HandsFreeLink onboard microphone and speakers.

Siri Eyes Free coming to 2013 Honda Accord, along with Acura RDX and ILX

Good news for Honda fans: the automobile manufacturer has just revealed which of its 2013 vehicles will receive support for Apple’s hands-free extension of Siri, known as Eyes Free. Namely, the feature will be available as a dealer-installed option for the Honda Accord, along with the RDX and ILX from Acura. Mum’s currently the word on software integration, but it’s worth pointing out that the HondaLink infotainment system was previously revealed to debut on the 2013 Accord, and both the RDX and ILX feature AcuraLink — so, you do the math. Honda’s yet to reveal pricing for the kit, but hey, it’s something to haggle about.

Siri Was Almost Installed On Verizon’s Droid Lineup Of Smartphones At One Point In Time

siri Siri Was Almost Installed On Verizons Droid Lineup Of Smartphones At One Point In TimeFor the most part, many of us equate Siri as being an Apple feature, but that wasn’t always the case. Siri used to belong to a small startup company that apparently not just Apple had their eye on, but US carrier Verizon. In a feature article by The Huffington Post, it was revealed that if it hadn’t been for Apple buying out Siri, it seems that Verizon would have installed Siri on all of their Droid lineup of phones, which as we’re sure most of you guys are aware of, are Android-based smartphones. It’s rather ironic considering that Siri is an iOS feature when it almost was an Android one, at least as far as Verizon was concerned. (more…)
