Some people willingly overpay for half-baked features in obscure gadgets. These are the early adopters of the world, and they know full well that the things they buy will not work perfectly. Hiccups and glitches are just part of the contract, the accepted trade-off for being first. More »
Today is a breezy, beautiful fall day in New York City. But if you ask Siri about the weather here, she’ll tell you it’s 90 degrees. This is not the weather in New York City, but rather the weather in New York, Texas. Something’s up with Siri again. More »
If you are in New York City, New York and recently asked Siri to tell you about the weather forecast for a few upcoming days, you may be in for a surprise. Siri is going to tell you that the weather is going to stay in the mid-90s for a few days, which is a bit too hot for the New Yorkers. Fortunately, that’s untrue and Siri has been making mistakes.
The voice-based personal assistant has apparently been mixing up the weather forecast of NYC with that of New York, Texas. Naturally, the weather is a lot warmer in Texas and there’s a significant difference in the temperatures between the two places. (more…)

iOS 6 now available to download for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch (update: full changelog)
Posted in: Today's ChiliCupertino’s newest hardware may have us purring, but Apple hasn’t left those of us with existing hardware out in the cold. iOS 6 should be appearing as an available update right now, or at least very shortly — depending on how taxed those servers get. It’ll be compatible with every iPhone since the 3GS, iPod touch 4G / 5G and this-and-last-year’s vintage of the iPad. Given the inexorable march of technology, some of the newer features won’t work on the older devices, but you can use our compatability checker to determine what new things you’ll be able to do in the next few hours.
We’ve had notes from our tipsters that the update is arriving a few minutes early (with photographic proof above), but so far we’ve had nothing here.
[Thanks, Jim]

Apple patent suggests that Siri for the Mac might be a possibility in the future
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt is safe to assume that Siri is a feature that Apple is very proud of, although at the moment it appears to be limited to just Apple’s iOS mobile devices. However given its ability to execute commands, take dictations, perform searches and whatnot, would it be a stretch of the imagination to think that maybe one day, Apple could bring Siri onto their Mac computers? The iPhone 5 will be the first device to bring on iOS 6, the system from Apple that’ll have the company’s first mobile turn-by-turn navigation system as well as 3D mapping, and today Apple has listed the regions where each feature will be appearing. Traffic, 3D buildings (aka Flyover), and turn-by-turn navigation are limited to a certain set of countries at the launch of iOS 6 for not only iPhone 5 but the rest of the compatible list of Apple mobile devices as well. While 3D buildings is limited at the moment to the USA, traffic is open to a much larger list – and turn-by-turn navigation is ready for almost everywhere.
The list begins with turn-by-turn navigation covering everywhere from the USA to Israel to Hong Kong and back again. New Zealand is included, as is the UK, and Sweden and Romania get to join in on the fun as well. Siri support for international destinations – a list of compatibility, that is – has been revealed and updated with Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, UK and the USA on the list. Siri Twitter integration and Facebook integration have been listed too with 14 countries on the list.
Dictation support has been extended to a list of 15 countries, while Siri restaurant reservations are currently set for Canada, Mexico, and the USA. Siri’s sports support – new to iOS 6 also – will be appearing in the USA, UK, Mexico, and s list of 12 other countries. Siri Movie Information will be popping up in 13 countries while Siri Movie Reviews will be in Australia, Canada, the UK, and the USA. Movie Showtimes will be in Canada, the UK, and the USA.
The USA is the only region to be included in the full list of iOS 6 features at launch time, with 3D Buildings being the only item that the UK is not included on – otherwise its the UK and the USA on ever single list. Have a peek at our Apple portal for more information on the devices and services launched this week, and don’t forget to check our our iPhone 5 hands-on as well – with more on the way!

Dictation on the Mac is pretty nice, for what it is, but Apple isn’t the first to pull that off. According to a new patent application though, it might be eyeing something more ambitious: full Siri control on the Mac. More »
Apple gives region-by-region breakdown of iOS 6 capabilities: specifies Siri and Maps functionality
Posted in: Today's ChiliIn an effort to let its customers know exactly what they’ll get when the iPhone 5 (and downloadable updates) arrive in their country, Apple has broken down what iOS 6 will offer in different territories. US customers will get the full bounty that the mobile OS has to offer, being the only country whose maps will be peppered with 3D buildings. A pretty comprehensive list of 23 iPhone-enraptured countries will join the US in claiming turn-by-turn navigation and traffic information, including most of western Europe, Australia, China and Canada. 49 countries will get their maps augmented by local search results, while directions and satellite imaging will arrive on an even larger list of places you’ll now need to visit.
Siri content, meanwhile, is a little leaner, with the likes of the UK, Japan, Canada and Australia all joining the US on some pretty short lists, gaining Twitter, Sport, Facebook and local search integration. Movie content, including reviews and showtimes, will only be fully enabled in the USA, UK and Canada. Check Apple’s full breakdown at the source below.

It’s time to take a peek at the entirety of the iPhone 5‘s specifications, top to bottom, as the device hits the Apple Store online and we get our first full taste of Apple‘s new smartphone hero (be sure to have a look at our wrap-up of Apple’s big event). This device is the thinnest and lightest iPhone yet with a 4-inch Retina quality display up front and a new A6 chip under the hood. The iPhone 5 works with 4G LTE on a variety of networks both here in the USA and abroad and works with what Apple calls Ultrafast wireless or “LTE. The right way.” The iPhone 5 has a new set of earbuds called EarPods, a new dock connector called Lightning, and a boosted 8-megapixel “iSight” camera as well.
This device has an on/off sleep/wake button on top, a 3.5-mm stereo headphone jack at the bottom near two speaker grills and a Lightning connector. It’s got three microphones for HD recording, and two buttons on the left, one for turning the volume up and one for turning it down. Of course, the iPhone 5 also comes running iOS 6, which boasts a number of improvement and new features, including Apple’s new Maps app, Facebook and Passbook integration, and new Siri functionality (which includes support for additional languages). NOTE: Check out our full hands-on with the iPhone 5 soon in our Apple portal!
That A6 chip lends to “twice the CPU and graphics performance,” and that 8-megapixel iSight camera on the back comes with a sapphire crystal lens that not only provides “a crystal clear” image, but is also more durable than standard glass. The iPhone 5 takes advantage of Apple-developed single-radio LTE, and also has dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi support at its disposal. Even though the iPhone 5 comes with a brand new Lightning connector, users will be able to connect to legacy 30-pin devices through the use of a special adapter, so Apple has you covered there. On the front we also have a “FaceTime HD” 1.2-megapixel camera, capable of shooting in 720p.
So there you have it, the iPhone 5 is actually a thing and it’s already taken up residence on the Apple’s homepage. It’ll go up for pre-order later this week on September 14, and then Apple is set to begin its worldwide roll out of the new phone on September 21. Like iPhones in the past, this one comes in three different flavors: 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399 (with a two-year agreement of course). Tell us – are you picking up the iPhone 5 next week?

The iPhone 5 may have been the groundbreaking announcement at today’s Apple event, but the iPod Touch is also getting a refresh, and it comes with a number of improvements over the iPod Touch that we’re familiar with. For example, Apple is making some big changes to the camera, with Apple including a new iSight camera on the back of this bad boy. This new camera comes complete with autofocus, LED flash, a 5 megapixel sensor, backside illumination, and a five-element lens.
To top things off, the iPod Touch comes with the same sapphire lens cover that the iPhone 5 is equipped with. The camera on the back support 1080p with image stabilization, while the FaceTime camera on the front can shoot in 720p and makes use of Apple’s facial recognition. The new iPod Touch will come in a variety of different colors – aluminum, black, red, blue, and yellow – and each one will come with a color-coordinated wrist straps that you can attach to the back of your device to keep it secure while using it as a camera.
Finally, in one of the most important announcements during Apple’s presentation, Siri is coming to the iPod Touch. The addition of Siri is bound to move some units this holiday season, so we’re going to go ahead and say that putting Siri on the iPod Touch is a winning idea for Apple. Have a look at our liveblog of Apple’s event for as-it-happens coverage, and also be sure to stop by our Apple portal to find more in-depth posts on Apple’s big announcements.
