The BBC and Sky may represent polar, warring opposites of the broadcasting business, but that doesn’t mean their technology platforms can’t get along. Following a promise made all the way back in January, internet-connected Sky+HD boxes will be able to access BBC iPlayer from today. The service has been integrated into Sky’s world-class program guide, with users even able to plump to catch available shows in high definition. The announcement also let slip that 4OD, the last remaining holdout to the service, will be added in early 2013. If you’ve yet to hook your Sky box up to the internet, you just need an Ethernet cable or wireless adapter — but let’s hope for your sake they aren’t at opposite ends of your house.

When you’re rooting for your team, one screen is never enough. Sky Sports knows this, and knows it quite well it seems. Hence why the UK Satellite giant is rolling out more of it via its iPad app. Now, as promised, the UEFA Champions League and 2012 Ryder Cup get in on the action. As you would imagine, the update lets users dive into a bunch of stats, game info, live tweets and even allows watching multiple games split-screen stylee. The updated app is available now, in plenty of time for the build up, leaving you free to stock up on snacks and refreshments.

Sky+ has been on a bit of a tear refreshing its set-top boxes, and it’s not about to stop now. When ready, a new update for the satellite TV provider’s devices will let you undelete recorded programs; deleted shows are now moved to a separate space and only removed permanently either through age or if you really, really don’t want to watch. If you’re more interested in watching content that’s always available, both Anytime and Anytime+ will be rebranded as On Demand, while the Sky Guide is adding a dedicated store tab for movie rentals. Catch Up TV is also nearing with the update and should aggregate the last week’s worth of shows from Sky in addition to BBC iPlayer, Demand 5 and ITV Player. The gotcha, as we know all too well from these kinds of firmware revisions, is the timing. You’ll have to have either a Sky+ HD 1TB box or the Sky+ HD DRX890 to get the upgrade early on, and Sky is staggering its deployment in a move that could leave some subscribers twiddling their thumbs.

Well, what do we have here? Sky’s NOW TV has just debuted on the Xbox platform, offering instant access movies to the current generation game console from Microsoft, and this comes after it was introduced across different platforms such as the PC, Mac, iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad, as well as selected Android smartphones in addition to YouView. Just what does NOW TV place on the table that might make you want to pick it up? This particular service will allow one to gain access to Sky Movies without the need for any contract, set-up fee or installation charge – with the added advantage of subscribers being able to access the program of their choice from a compatible platform.

Xbox users will be served streams that come in 720i resolution, not to mention being able to check out the entire slew of 11 Sky Movies live channels. As for Kinect owners, you can even gesticulate and holler at your TV in order to navigate through the different options, which is somewhat reminiscent of the new generation of Samsung Smart TVs.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has threatened a bidding war with UK Broadcaster BSkyB for premium movie rights, and he could have the war chest to back it up — the company also hit the million subscriber mark in the UK only seven months after launching there. Netflix UK boasted that it even got there faster than Twitter or Facebook did globally, and chalked up the success to most British households having at least one household streaming device. Meanwhile, Hastings said the US company intends to pry premium Hollywood movie rights away from BSkyB, promising to be “really aggressive in our bidding.” The streaming service will have to overcome more than money, however — the UK’s Competition Commission granted BSkyB a rights extension to protect it from the very likes of Netflix.
