SkyDrive app gains Windows Phone 8 support in version 3.0

SkyDrive app gains Windows Phone 8 support in version 30

After just a few short months at v2.0, Microsoft’s own SkyDrive app is now sitting pretty at 3.0. What’s an extra point get you? For starters, it’ll support all incoming Windows Phone 8 products, and it’ll also allow users to search their SkyDrive files / folders. Moreover, you’ll find new settings for photo upload and download size, as well as updated app icons and visuals. Microsoft has also improved performance when it comes to loading one’s content, but as of now, the 3.0 update won’t play nice with WP7 handsets. Hit up the source link if you’re hungry for more.

Skydrive images posted natively on Twitter timeline

Should you happen to use both Twitter and Skydrive in a prolific manner, then you would obviously realize that it was possible to only post links to your stream – until today, that is. From now on, Skydrive images will also be able to be posted natively on your Twitter feed, which is a nice albeit small gesture to include. Obviously, this is not some sort of ground-breaking feature, but it sure as heck is more than a welcome addition to the micro-blogging tool.

Skydrive is seen by some to be an integral part of Microsoft’s future plans since this is the Washington company’s plan to tie in the rest of their platforms together. Such a feature would ensure that adoption rates of the platform increase if the masses bite, and the timing of it all could not be better planned as Microsoft introduces both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 to the rest of the world. Will you be jumping aboard the Windows Phone 8 bandwagon?

New Office Web Apps now available on SkyDrive

Microsoft has announced the release of the newest Office Web Apps, which are now available via SkyDrive. Until now, the Office 2013-ish apps have been in preview mode since July, with 750,000 testers giving it the run through. According to the announcement, the Office Web Apps were “fine-tuned” for Windows 8, IE10, and iOS 6.

The Office Web Apps include Word Web App, Excel Web App, PowerPoint Web App, and OneNote Web App. Documents render 30% faster than before, and Microsoft promises that Office Web Apps and standard Microsoft Office applications play well together and are fully compatible. Sadly, Office Web Apps includes mostly basic features, lacking a lot of the more advanced features you find in its desktop software counterpart.

The Word Web App includes new support for adding and viewing comments, and has new page layout and picture tools. PowerPoint Web Apps has gained video playback support, allowing users to view videos from tablets and smartphones, as well as new comment and co-authoring support. In OneNote, you’ll find the added ability to search either an entire page or just a section, as well as new ink viewing support. In Excel Web App, you can “now print right from your browser and rename or add sheets as you need.”

Office Web Apps were first launched in 2010, allowing users to utilize Office from their Web browsers. Updates include expanded support for touch-friendly editing, additional formatting controls, and “consistent co-authoring/collaboration support across web apps.” You can get the new Office Web Apps from Outlook.com and via SkyDrive.

Microsoft announces updates for Windows 8 built-in apps, just in time for October 26th launch

DNP Windows 8 apps

All signs point toward the impending general availability of Windows 8, what with the upcoming OS launch event, the Surface RT finally hitting the FCC, and Paul Allen letting the world knows what he thinks of it. In light of this, the Redmond company has announced a final update push to the built-in apps you’ll find in Windows 8. The Bing update will be first out the gate tomorrow — it promises richer search results for local content — with the rest rolling out through October 26th. Also of note is Music, which touts “expanded music services” as an update (Xbox Music, anyone?). If you’re itching to know what built-in apps will be updated, you can get the full and extensive list after the break.

SkyDrive adds recycle bin, Excel surveys for the chronically indecisive

SkyDrive adds Recycle Bin and Excel surveys for the chronically indecisive

For all of the talk of cloud backups and sync, there isn’t always a safety net when working from the cloud itself — delete a file online and it might be gone forever. With that in mind, Microsoft just brought Windows’ recycle bin concept to SkyDrive through a low-key update. You can now delete anything immediately, knowing that you can change your mind within three days — and longer still, should the recycle bin occupy less than 10 percent of the storage limit. If you’re just as uncertain about creating content as scrapping it, SkyDrive has also received support for creating and sharing Excel surveys to narrow down the scope of a project. The recycle bin should slide into your SkyDrive account within the next day; Excel surveys aren’t yet polished enough, but they should be ready “soon.”

SkyDrive app for Android Launches

Microsoft announced a few weeks ago that it intended to offer a new SkyDrive app for Android smartphone users. Microsoft has announced that as of yesterday the app is now available for download. The Android version of the app is similar to the apps available for Windows Phone and iOS devices according to Microsoft.

The new app is one of the key features in making SkyDrive files accessible from all devices. Microsoft designed the Android app to keep the same intuitive SkyDrive experience while using Android design patterns and conventional Android interactions. Using those Android interactions allows the app to be comfortable and natural to use and navigate for Android users.

The Android app is designed to work with Android 4.0 for the best experience, but it’s functional on Android 2.3 and higher. The Android app allows users to access documents, photos, and other files stored on their SkyDrive. Users can also view recently used documents.

The app allows multiple photos or videos to be uploaded from the Android smartphone or tablet. Users can also share files and photos by sending a link via e-mail or in other apps. SkyDrive files can be opened from within other Android applications and folders can be deleted or created from within the app.

SkyDrive App For Android Finally Arrives

A few days ago, Microsoft launched a massive revamp of its cloud storage service, SkyDrive. The revamp improved both the looks and the functionality of the service. As far as the design was concerned, Microsoft brought SkyDrive’s UI well in sync with its metro philosophy which is permeating nearly every Microsoft software.

In the post detailing all these changes, Microsoft had promised that although it wasn’t offering a SkyDrive app for Android at that moment, such an app was in the making and would be launched soon. Now, the software giant has lived up to its promise. A new blog post on the Windows Team Blog has now announced the availability of the SkyDrive app for Android. (more…)
