Activision’s Skylanders Reportedly Outselling All Other Action Figures

Activisions Skylanders Reportedly Outselling All Other Action FiguresWhen I was growing up and before video games were so popular, I was given action figures to play with, but these days with kids having access to smartphones, tablets, and video game consoles, are action figures still relevant? That’s what Activision tried to do by combining action figures with a video game that resulted in the Skylanders title. For those unfamiliar, Skylanders is a video game that uses figurines to interact with it through the use of NFC. It was a novel idea but it appears that kids love novel.

According to a new press release from Activision, the company is claiming that the Skylander toys have actually managed to outsell all other action figures in the US in 2013, and these numbers are based on internal Activision numbers along with the US NPD Group’s numbers. The Skylanders franchise has managed to produce $1.5 billion in revenue around the world, and while it might not be the best-selling video game title, Activision claims that the latest Skylanders Giants title is the best-selling console and handheld title in overall dollars spent in 2013. Not too shabby!

Skylanders SWAP Force to Debut Later this Year

If you’re a big fan of the Skylanders video game and collectible toy franchise, Activision has announced a new game is coming this fall. The new game is called Skylanders SWAP Force. The game will feature 16 new characters that will be on display at the Toy Fair 2013 in New York this month.

The coolest feature of the new game in the franchise is that the player can customize the accompanying action figures. Each of the 16 action figures that go along with the new  game has the ability to be separated into top and bottom halves. Those halves can then be interchanged, creating custom action figures with custom powers and abilities. In addition to the 16 swappable characters, the game will feature 16 new Skylanders, and 16 upgraded versions of classic characters.

SWAP Force will see players starting a new adventure in the mysterious Cloudbreak Islands. These islands are the home of a volcano that erupts every 100 years replenishing the magic in the Skylands. The special characters in the game were once blown apart by the volcano and left with special abilities, including the ability to empty your kids’ piggy banks.

The game is expected to be coming to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U later this year.

Skylanders Swap Force is the next annual entry in the ‘toys to life’ gaming franchise, we go hands-on

Three years, three games. Skylanders Swap Force — the latest crossplatform entry in the mega-successful Skylanders game franchise — cements Activision’s annual approach to its “toys to life” series. The games merge toy figurines with RFID technology to allow in-game avatar representations of the toys to move from game console to game console, all the while storing unique information about that character. It’s essentially the equivalent of how fighting games work in Japanese arcades, albeit with children’s toys and a relatively simple action game: you level up your character, which is tied to your toy, and it can be used to continue earning experience on a variety of game consoles.

The second iteration brought Giants to the world of Skylanders. This year, Activision’s in-house studio Vicarious Visions (known for working on powerhouses like Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk Pro Skater previously) is taking the series in another direction, keeping original Skylanders, the second game’s Giants, and adding a new twist in swappable characters.

Yes, despite the image above of a half-octopus swashbuckler, this year’s innovation isn’t destructible characters. That sword in his right … hand and the water pistol in his left can be replaced on another swappable character’s bottom half — its motion component — creating an altogether new character. With 16 new characters, that means 256 combinations altogether; an enticing proposition to fans, and a potentially comforting thought to parents hounded by kids for new pieces every week. But it’s not just swappable characters that are new in Swap Force. Activision’s touting this entry as the first Skylanders entry to’ve been built from the ground up in HD. That’s a notable change for the franchise, marking Activision’s focus shifting from Nintendo’s Wii to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as well as Nintendo’s Wii U. Oh, and there’s jumping. You can jump in this one.
