Skype Tests Out New Windows Desktop & Mac Experiences

Skype Tests Out New Windows Desktop & Mac ExperiencesThe folks over at Microsoft, who happen to own Skype just in case you were hiding under a rock for the past three years, has just announced that they have kicked off a new round of testing for a new user interface when it comes to the Windows desktop as well as Mac Skype desktop clients. In fact, the Skype team had been hard at work for close to a year and half, developing various new interfaces for the Windows 8, iOS and Android versions. Considering their work for this season has come to an end, it is time to pay more attention to the desktop clients and see if there is anything else which can be improved.

A small segment of Windows desktop users would have undergone this particular “feeler” session already, and in due time, a handful of Skype for Mac users, too, will be able to enjoy such an experience. The brand new user interface intends to deliver a clean and modern look to Skype, where one will be able to enjoy a more delightful and coherent experience regardless of the Skype client eventually. Microsoft will take into consideration the various test results and feedback received, ensuring that at the end, more fine tuning will be able to deliver a polished product that sits down well with everyone. Voxeet 2.0 with Dial-in Support and Voxeet for Mac – Review

Voxeet 2.0 with Dial in Support and Voxeet for Mac ReviewVoxeet is an impressive audio conference application that provides 3DHD sound. Launched at DEMOFall 2012, Voxeet is available for free for Windows, Android and iOS, and a week ago, the company launched the Mac version alongside its 2.0 update. With Voxeet 2.0 you can get dial-in numbers that let you dial in to a conference for free from over 40 countries worldwide, or switch your call from a bad internet connection to a local phone line in one click.

The briefing was done with Voxeet and we were 4 participants total. During that call the 3DHD sound was crystal clear and I was able to try the audio conferencing app’s main features.

First of all, Voxeet’s most unique offering compared to main competitor Skype is the 3DHD sound that allows users to hear each participant voice from different directions, making the experience feels as if you were in a real room talking with people next to you, and it is impressive.  In my experience using Skype as my primary conference call service, after 30 to 40 minutes of audio-only conversation, calls systematically drop and it is impossible to call back, or become highly unstable.  This did not happen with Voxeet.

Skype Could Feature New Chat UI For Windows Desktop

Skype Could Feature New Chat UI For Windows DesktopWhile some might call this to be an April Fool’s prank, it apparently isn’t as the person who leaked out what seems to be an update to the Skype client which boasted of a new chat UI for the hugely popular VoIP program. The tipster known as “Marvin” claimed that he was absolutely clueless as to how he received the update, but at the end of the day, the chat interface looks extremely different from what he was used to. Check out the screenshot above and draw your own conclusions – it shows off the Modern UI that is normally found in the Windows 8 version of Skype.

Skype 4.7 For Android Runs All Day Long Without Massive Battery Drain

Skype 4.7 For Android Runs All Day Long Without Massive Battery DrainWhen it comes to apps and software, new releases as well as periodic updates make plenty of sense, and changes that cannot be seen on top and yet make a stark difference to the final product are normally the best ones. Skype 4.7 for Android has been designed in such a way by the Skype for Android team, so much so that the aggressive battery savings that comes with the latest version of the app would allow users to have Skype running in the background without affecting battery life noticeably.

    Skype For Xbox One Updated

Skype For Xbox One UpdatedSkype has announced an update for Skype for Xbox One which adds better synchronized chats, push notifications, and bug fixes – among other things, here’s the exact list from Skype’s blog post:

    • Improved Chat
    • Marvel’s Captain America
    • Contact Filtering
    • First Time Tutorial
    • Swatting Bugs

To me, the most important ones are the improved chat and the contact filtering. I have been less than pleased with the “Metro” version of Skype, and other full screen versions of the apps. The space was typically not very well managed, the conversation sync was slow and if you have a lot of contacts, browsing them was not very nice. (more…)
