Facebook Rolls Out VoIP Calling To U.S. iPhone Messenger Users

Facebook Rolls Out VoIP Calling To U.S. iPhone Messenger Users

Earlier this month, Facebook updated its iPhone Messenger App to be a little more than just a way for you to IM your Facebook friends, that is, if for some reason you prefer to do it in a standalone application rather than reading your messages through Facebook’s official app. The update brought the ability to share voice messages to Facebook users through the application, but in Canada, or the land of maple syrup as I like to call it, they were given the ability to make VoIP calls through Facebook Messenger.

It looks like the “test” was deemed enough of a success for Facebook to now allow for the U.S. version of Facebook Messenger to be given the ability to make VoIP calls to other Facebook users. Best of all, there’s no update necessary as it’ll just start work as soon as you deem someone lucky enough to hear the sound of your voice rather than just your words on a screen.

Facebook teamed up with Skype back in November of 2011 as the union made it possible to make calls through Skype right from the comfort of your Facebook profile. Today’s update makes it much easier to chat with someone as you can initiate a call straight from your iPhone.

Lady Gaga Chats Up Fans On Skype This Thursday

skype gaga Lady Gaga Chats Up Fans On Skype This ThursdayAre you one of Lady Gaga’s little monsters? If you think that you are worthy of being called so (some others might beg to differ), then make sure you mark January 17th on your calendars, where at 2pm PST, Lady Gaga will carry out a Skype group video call with her merry band of little monsters. It would be a chance for those who have yet to check out Lady Gaga live, uncut and offstage, to do so, as lucky sweepstakes winners will be able to talk live with Lady Gaga herself. Face-to-face without any kind of pretense, of course. You might want to start formulating those questions for Lady Gaga from now on, followed by logging in to the social stream on the Ustream player and who knows? Lady Gaga herself might choose to answer your question during the call. Head on here for additional information on what’s happening this January 17th. [Press Release]

Skype 6.1 for Windows has updated profiles, Outlook integration

Skype has announced version 6.1 for Windows, which includes two big changes: an updated profiles, and integration with Outlook, eliminating the need to toggle between the two applications. With the latest version, users can make calls and perform other Skype functions, such as messaging, from directly within Outlook. The update is available for download now.

outlook skype

Contacts’ online statuses are now displayed from within Outlook via their contact cards, including mood messages and contact data. Calls can be initiated from within Skype regardless of whether the contact is a Skype friend. Once the contact’s phone number is added to Outlook’s contacts, a call can be initiated. Obviously, you have to have a Skype subscription or credit.

In addition to placing calls, users can also sent an instant message to any contact who also uses Skype. Likewise, if the contact has Skype, a video call can be initiated from within Outlook rather than just an audio call. This differs from above because the contact must have Skype. The feature is available for those using Outlook 2010 or higher.

In addition to Outlook integration, Skype 6.1 for Windows allows users to find contacts by searching for them via the contacts list. Profiles have been altered so that information is more accessible and the entire design is easier to navigate. Some account options have been added as well, such as an easier method to get a subscription.

Skype Updates Windows Client To Integrate With Microsoft Outlook

Back in 2011, Microsoft announced it had purchased Skype for a cool $8.5 billion, and shortly thereafter we started seeing Microsoft slowly start to integrate it into its products, even ending its own Windows Live Messenger and having those users move over to Skype. A new version of Skype is available today, and once again, it’s receiving some integration with a Microsoft product.

Skype 6.1 for Windows now has Microsoft Outlook integration as you’ll be able to send Skype instant messages and make calls all from the comfort of Outlook, which we’re sure many of you stare at for hours in a single day. Not only that, but Outlook will also display a user’s Skype online status, contact information and mood message within their Outlook contact card.

Aside from the Outlook integration, Skype has made additional changes to its application that makes it easier to add a new contact and has also made changes to users’ profiles and gives more information within the account information area.

Microsoft to kill the Messenger and migrate users to Skype in March

This week Microsoft sent out a mass e-mail to all 100,000,000+ users of its Messenger instant messaging application. The mass e-mail was sent out to let users know that as of March 15, 2013 Messenger would no longer be available. Microsoft will be migrating all Messenger users over to Skype on March 15.

This migration has been brewing since Microsoft purchase Skype in May of 2011 for a whopping $8.5 billion. After the March 15 deadline, messenger will only continue to work in mainland China. This is reportedly because Skype is operated by a local provider called TOM in mainland China.

Microsoft is urging users to go ahead and update to Skype and sign in using a Microsoft Account, which is the same as the users Messenger ID. The good thing is that all of the users Messenger contacts will be available and users will be able to instant messaging video chat with them via Skype just as they did previously on Messenger.

Microsoft previously promised that Messenger would be retired in Q1 of 2013, but the exact date was only revealed this week. Messenger users will be given the option to merge your own accounts and message both Skype and Messenger contacts.

Microsoft retiring Messenger on March 15th, wants you to use Skype instead

Microsoft retiring Messenger on March 15th, wants you to use Skype instead

While we knew Microsoft Messenger was due to retire sometime in the first quarter of this year, we now have a confirmed date. According to The Next Web, Redmond has informed users via email that they have until March 15th to use the IM platform, after which they will need to hop on to Skype to chat with their Messenger pals. Your buddy list will automatically be migrated to the VoIP-focused offering. Desktop users of the outgoing service (globally except mainland China, where it will live on) should receive a banner notification to install Skype and, as it turns out, clicking on said banner will also uninstall Messenger. Road warriors are also taken care of, with Microsoft account support already baked into iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8 versions of the Skype app. Nostalgia notwithstanding, fans of the long-standing MSN descendent can at least take solace in the broader set of features Skype offers.

Windows Live Messenger To Be Discontinued March 15

Windows Live Messenger 640x351 Windows Live Messenger To Be Discontinued March 15I have personally not logged into Windows Live Messenger for at least a year, or maybe even longer, but the point is that it has been a while. Skype is now my main mode of communicating with friends and family, and it looks like Microsoft plans to move all their users onto Skype – unsurprising given the Redmond company’s acquisition of Skype awhile back. Microsoft has since sent out an email to its Messenger users, informing them that come March 15th 2013, they will be discontinuing the Windows Live Messenger service and that users will have to upgrade to Skype if they wish to continue using their IM service. However fret not because from now until then, Windows Live Messenger will continue to operate as per normal. Interestingly it seems that this will affect everyone around the world except for those living in mainland China. Back in November it was rumored that such a move could be taking place which then confirmed a day later, but at that time only a rough timeframe of Q1 2013 was given, but at least we have a fixed date now which Windows Live Messenger users will probably want to mark down on their calendars.

Skype For Windows Phone 8 2.1 Changes Detailed

26 Skype logo1 Skype For Windows Phone 8 2.1 Changes DetailedYesterday, we brought you word of a new version of Skype for Windows Phone 8, and while there were no official changelog listed, the entire update was available for the entire world to download. Which is a good thing, of course. It is nice to know however, just what we are getting after the installation process, and we are glad to bring you word that the good folks over at Skype themselves have listed down the changes in the latest version of Skype for Windows Phone 8.

This particular release saw work done on improving the overall reliability and performance of the application, with plenty of attention paid to background notifications and calling. The People Hub integration has been disabled on a temporary basis as it has been pinpointed as the cause of device stability, and hopefully integration will be made available sometime down the road after more kinks are ironed out.

Other changes include an updated chat keyboard with improved autocomplete/autocorrect, buddies from Windows Live Messenger being labeled in the People list, an additional option to enable toast notifications for Windows Live Messenger buddies, and improved call reliability among others. Are you loving your freshly updated Skype for Windows Phone 8?

Skype for Windows Phone update ‘temporarily’ kills People Hub integration

DNP Skype for Windows Phone update 'temporarily' kills People Hub

Earlier this week Microsoft updated its Skype for Windows Phone application. Making good on its plans to retire Messenger, users can now IM their buddy list from within the app. In addition, the new software push adds the ability to receive calls and messages while Skype is closed, but the changelog cautions that this feature is a “work-in-progress.” While we welcome these new features with open arms, they come at somewhat of a steep price. Skype 2.1.0.241 “temporarily” kills the app’s integration with Windows Phone’s People Hub. Something that Microsoft plans to patch up via another update at an undisclosed time. If you can get past losing such a prominent feature for the sake of being up to date, then head on over to the Windows Phone Store to claim your 8MB prize.

Skype for Windows Phone 8 updated with “always on” feature

The final release of a completely rock-and-roll Skype app for Windows Phone 8 is upon us all, here this week with a new Preview Release that includes no less than call and message notifications even while closed. This is in contrast to the past where both users (on either end of the Skype call or message) had to have Skype open to make a connection. This update is coming to all Windows Phone 8 users starting today (if they’ve got Skype downloaded already, of course).

This update brings on the ability to call Skype users with your Skype account over wi-fi or your 3G connection for free. You can now make free video calls to anyone working with Skype, you can make “low cost” calls to any other human on the planet (they using a phone without Skype, in this case), and you can send instant messages to groups (as well as regular IMs now as well).

You can also sign in now with your Microsoft Account (not just a Skype account) and send instant messages with your buddies galore! This update requires Windows Phone 8 to run and requires a minimum of 512MB of memory to run effectively. The version you’re updating to is numbered 2.1.0.241 and wont take you one whole heck of a lot of time to download if you’re working with wi-fi.

This update is still a preview, we must remind you once more, this is a preview release. They’re not saying is a Beta, but it might as well be titled as such. Feel free to download this app at will, but be on the alert for bugs! Let us know how it goes for you!
