Microsoft announces Skype app for Windows Phone 8 with new UI, deep People Hub integration (video)

Last week, if you recall, Microsoft announced Skype for Windows 8, a touch-friendly app that appeared in the Windows Store the same day Win 8 went on sale. Now, with Windows Phone 8 getting its big reveal, the company is following up with a WP8 version, which Microsoft says is coming soon. Like the new Windows 8 app, it runs in the background, delivering push notifications even when you’re looking at something else. In particular, now that Windows Phone allows for three different tile sizes, you can view the Skype tile in small, medium or large formats, with the largest displaying your latest message. (All tile sizes show an unread message count.)

There are other similarities to the Win 8 app, too, despite the fact that these phones have smaller screens. There’s a favorites list, for one, along with a shortcut that makes it easy to toggle between open IM conversations. As on Windows 8, the app is deeply integrated with the People Hub, so that Skype handles appear on contact cards and incoming Skype calls look the same as any other. On the messaging side, there’s an impressively large collection of emoticons (TMI-face, anybody?). It’s also possible to start group chats, as well as change the conversation topic. So far, it’s unclear when, exactly, the app will be available for download, but in the meantime we’ve got a short video demo waiting for you after the break.

Skype gets “always-on” feature for Windows Phone 8

This week Microsoft has announced that they’re bringing on a whole new Skype app for their Windows Phone 8 app. This update allows Skype to be on always, or “always-on”, as it were, not draining the battery as a normal app would. This is allowed quite simply because Microsoft owns the bulk of Skype, thus letting them work as close as possible with the developers running the show – integration as never before.

This update allows Skype to work just as intuitively as your phone. You can video chat here with a tap – just as you’ve been able to chat with your phone or your text messaging in the past. With Skype on always, it’s as if the Windows Phone 8 universe is as tied up with this giant chat beast as it is with SMS.

This is a giant deal for Microsoft who also made a big deal of their Skype integration on Windows 8 – with this boost from Microsoft, Skype is ready to stay a giant name in the video chat business. As it were though, should one or the other fail, Skype may well fall with it. With cross-over deal happening, both Skype and Microsoft are ready to harvest the power of brand trust – one must be excellent if they work with the other.

Stick around and see how both brands expand and how Skype will truly be integrated with the Windows Phone 8 world in the very near future!

Windows Phone 8 gets Live Apps for lock screen

This week Microsoft has introduced an update to Windows Phone 8 with a brand new set of features for their lock screen – starting with Live Apps. This update brings on a feature similar to what we’re seeing with Windows 8, the desktop system being released here right at the same time as Windows Phone 8. Here with Live Apps comes a unique version of Facebook, made specifically for the Windows Phone 8 environment – personalization for your everyday first look at the smart mobile world.

This update also brings Windows Phone 8 into a new age for a collection of applications including Angry Birds Roost, Words with Friends, Chase, Twitter, and Skype. The Windows 8 version of Skype is made with a new architecture – so too is the Windows Phone 8 edition. With Microsoft owning the bulk of Skype, you’ve got features that don’t appear on any other operating system.

Skype is one example of an app that doesn’t run in the background – it’s on all the time, but doesn’t drain your battery like a normal app would. True also is the set of apps that appear at your lockscreen. Temple Run is also coming to the Windows Phone 8 environment, as is the Star Wars version of Angry Birds.

Skype 6.0 for Mac and Windows released

Today marks the release of Skype 6.0 for Mac and Windows, and those who have already gone ahead and installed or updated their previous version to Skype 6.0, you would realize that there is a bunch of new features waiting to be discovered, where among them include Microsoft and Facebook account integration. Basically, signing up and signing in has never been easier than before, where you can opt to sign into Skype using your Microsoft or Facebook account without having to actually create a new Skype account. Definitely the ideal new feature to have considering how many passwords we need to remember these days for the plethora of accounts that we own at the moment.

Other than that, you can also send instant messages to friends on your Windows Live Messenger, Hotmail and Outlook.com contacts over Skype, and if you already own a Microsoft account, merging your spate of accounts is a snap, all you need to do is just sign in to Skype using your Microsoft account. Of course, if you want to read up on the entire new features and fixtures crammed into Skype 6.0 for Mac and Windows, hit the source link and you’re good to go.

You’re probably saying to yourself, “didn’t Skype just get a Windows 8-friendly refresh?” Why yes, yes it did. But Skype 6.0 here isn’t limited to Windows RT slates, instead it’s designed for more traditional Windows systems and even has a similarly numbered OS X counter part. There’s a number of notable changes here, including the ability to sign in directly with your Facebook or Microsoft account. (If you’ve got a Live Messenger, Hotmail or Outlook.com account, then you’ve got a Microsoft account.) The most visible changes, however, will be the “flattened” Don’t-call-it-Metro-friendly UI on Windows and the addition of Retina display support on OS X. There’s a few other minor changes, including some additional localizations, which you can read about at the source. And heck, since you’re already there, might as well download Skype too.

Skype v.6 released: Retina support and Facebook/Live Messenger integration

Skype has pushed out a new version for PC and Mac, v.6, which introduces Facebook Chat integration as well as Retina Display support for the OS X client. The updated VoIP and video calling app can now pull in Windows Live Messenger, Outlook.com, and Hotmail contacts, thanks to further Microsoft integration between its products, and in fact you no longer need a separate Skype account at all.

Instead, you can use your existing Facebook or Microsoft credentials to log in, and if you choose the latter then the various chat services Microsoft offers will instantly be supported too. Microsoft had already been talking up its Skype for Windows 8 app, completely redesigned to suit the Metro-style UI.

In the pipeline, meanwhile, is the ability to break out chat conversations into different windows so as to more easily monitor them on the Mac app; that’s already enabled in the PC version. There’ll also be the ability to make audio/video calls directly to Windows Live Messenger users from the Skype app, which Microsoft says is due in the “coming weeks.”

Skype is a free download, though there are premium services which you can pay for. Those include unlimited voice calls to landlines, group video chats for up to ten participants, and instant live-chat support from Skype itself.

Skype 2.1.23 update for Belle FP2 could be the last

Yes, we do know and are full well aware that the Belle FP2 operating system might be more or less the last one for folks who have devices which run on the Symbian platform, and having said that, there are also other devices out there which still have Symbian as its operating system of choice, and some of these folks do use apps like Skype, you know. We are glad to announce that Skype 2.1.23 update for Belle FP2 has been introduced via the Nokia Store, and one ought to take note before downloading and installation that this is purely a voice and chat application only.

It will not be possible to run video calls through the app, although one is still able to carry out the exchange of pictures, videos and other files. Other than that, Skype 2.1.23 update for Belle FP2 will also feature Skype-to-Skype calling support over a Wi-Fi connection, or over a cellular data connection. This does seem to be the last and final update for the Skype app, so let us have a moment of silence as well.

It goes without saying, Microsoft, who owns Skype, will be working to roll out a new version of Skype. This should not come across as a surprise considering how Microsoft, too, has a new Windows operating system for the masses known as Windows 8, so it would be a no-brainer to roll out Skype for Windows 8. It is said that Skype for Windows 8 sees Microsoft focus on how folks are using Skype today, while re-imagining Skype for everyday communications worldwide. If we were to summarize it, one can say that Skype for Windows 8 is simple, fast and beautiful.

It makes communication easier when recent chat messages and calls can be seen the moment you launch Skype, in addition to seeing folks who you come into contact with the most. Adding to your favorite contacts is as easy as a simple tap or click away. Calling landlines or smartphones directly has been simplified as well thanks to the new and modern dial pad. Windows 8 knows whether you are using a desktop, laptop, tablet or convertible PC, as it has Skype running in the background without causing too much of a drain on your battery life, which is a good thing especially when you’re using a mobile device. Are you looking forward to Skype for Windows 8?

Skype comes to Windows 8 with all new app

Microsoft has already packed Windows 8 with a bunch of apps from the get-go, but one thing we haven’t heard too much about is the company’s Skype app for the new operating system. That all changed today, as Microsoft has officially unveiled its Skype for Windows 8 app, detailing all of the new features in a Big Blog post. Needless to say, if you’re a Skype user who will be installing Windows 8 at the end of the week, you’re in for a lot of new features.

First and foremost, Skype will be getting its own Live tile on the Start page, allowing you to launch the program with a single click (or touch, if you’re using a touch screen). The Skype Live tile will display missed messages or calls right there on the Start page, so you can easily see if someone is trying to get in touch with you. Once you launch Skype, you’ll see your recent calls and messages displayed next to your favorite contacts.

With Windows 8, Skype will always be running in the background, so you’ll be able to get message and call alerts on the desktop even if you’re using a different app or program. Skype has also launched a special full-screen mode with this version of the app, and checking out the video below, we have to say that it looks perfect for touch screens. The new Skype also comes with support for the Windows 8 People app, allowing you to integrate all of your Skype contacts and get in touch through the app, which acts as something of a digital address book.

As if that weren’t enough, Windows 8 users also have the ability to snap Skype to the left or right of their screen, so they can continue the conversation as they look at another app. All in all, it looks pretty cool, and it will be available on the Windows 8 Store on October 26 – the same day the new OS launches. Still on the fence when it comes to Windows 8? Have a look at our review to see what we think about it!

Microsoft announces Skype for Windows 8: full-screen calls, push notifications and People Hub integration

Microsoft announces Skype for Windows 8: full-screen calls, push notifications and People Hub integration

With Windows 8 going on sale in just four days, Microsoft is doing a sensible thing and releasing a version of Skype optimized for Win 8. As you’d expect, Skype for Windows 8 has the same overarching look and feel as other apps, which is to say you can swipe from left to right to see different categories, such as recent activity, favorites and a complete contacts list. But the integration with Windows 8 goes a little deeper than that. Just as you can pinch your Live Tiles to zoom out and make them easier to navigate, you can use semantic zoom to sift through a long list of contacts. And, because Skype runs in the background, you can set up your Start Screen so that the Skype Live Tile shows notifications for things like missed calls. Additionally, Skype is now baked into the People Hub, so that someone’s Skype handle shows up alongside other forms of contact, like an email address or phone number.

The in-call experience has also been modified to take advantage of certain features in Win 8. For one, you can link your Skype and Microsoft account, so that when you log into your system using your Microsoft ID, you’ll already be logged into Skype. While on a call, you can conduct video chats using the whole screen, at which point chat messages from that person will show up as text bubbles on the side of the screen. At any time, you can swipe to see other recent activity, which could be handy if you’re juggling multiple IM conversations at once.

If you prefer, you can also dock Skype on the side of the screen, as you can with any other program in Win 8. With the Skype chat taking up just a third (or two thirds) of the screen, you can use that remaining real estate for an IM chat within Skype, or maybe a web search. Lastly, if you return to the home screen, there’s a large phone icon up top where you’ll find the dialer, whose number pad allow your fingers plenty of room to hit the right keys. You’ll see your balance listed there, too, in the event you’re not planning on making a free call to another Skype user. That’s our quick summary of what’s new, but if you like you’ll soon be able to experience it for yourself: the app will be available for free in the Windows Store on October 26th.
