Skype used to present thesis by students

Nearly a week ago, we talked about how Skype turned 9 – and just what other kinds of novel application can we see Skype being used for? Well, how about using the famous VoIP application to present your thesis via an online class? Doctorate student Michael Nkwenti Ndongfack in Cameroon attends his Open University Malaysia classes online, and has every intention of making a strong case for his final thesis over Skype.

Online learning is definitely not a new idea, and while it makes education far more accessible to the masses, there is nothing quite like being there in person on a campus, with real students and actual professors and lecturers to interact with. What do you think about learning online? I am quite sure that casual learning is fine, but I certainly would not want to place my life in the hands of a doctor who picked up his medical degree while performing operations remotely over the computer.

Skype turns 9 today

Skype logoHow far have we come since the invention of the telephone (which was obviously preceded by other kinds of long distance communication tools such as smoke signals and messenger pigeons), and fast forward to today, we are able to keep in touch with folks from halfway across the world in different time zones, at the touch of a button. Skype, the VoIP software of choice for millions of people around the world, has just turned 9 today, and where they are now (after being purchased by Microsoft in October last year) is certainly heads and shoulders above what was originally conceived way back in 2003.

How has the use of Skype impacted you in the past 9 years when it came to communication with your family and friends, near and far alike? Have you since moved on to other VoIP programs or IMs, only to return to Skype, and why? Or are you a true blue Skype loyalist who has never taken a look elsewhere?

Skype updated for iOS with photo sharing and performance boosts

This morning those of you working with the iOS version of Skype for either your iPad or iPhone will be glad to find an update waiting in your App Store inbox, so to speak. There you’ll be seeing a version that brings on one of the most frequently requested features for the app of all time, Photo Sharing. Performance upgrades have also been added to the app as Skype notes that “many of you want to keep Skype running on your mobile devices all the time.”

With the photo sharing upgrade you’ll be able to bring on photos you’ve either just shot or have on your Photo Roll from the past. There’s no limit on the side of the photo file you send, believe it or not, so no worries on taking a giant beast of a shot and knocking it down to size before sending. Skype notes that you’ll be able to send photos “without reaching email size limits or paying expensive MMS charges.” Of course you’ll still be paying for the data you use via your data plan if you’re not on Wi-fi, as always.

Performance upgrades comes in the form of battery drain here with both versions of the Skype app for iOS. You’ll be able to run Skype in the background as you have been able to for some time, and you’ll be able to answer calls throughout the day as they appear, now with battery drain that’s less severe than in the past. Skype also notes that the app will load your contact lists faster than ever before as well.

This version of Skype will work for most versions of Apple mobile device hardware including any version of the iPad, iPhone 3G/3GS and iPhone 4/4S, 2nd and 3rd Generation iPod touch. You can grab the update for any device using iOS 4.3 or later straight from the iTunes app store right this minute!

Thanks to a new update, folks utilizing the VoIP service on their iPhone and iPad will be able to send photos of any size on their mobile devices. The update also brings some boosts to overall performance, according to Skype, including faster load times and less power hogging. The update is available for devices running iOS 4.3 or later, including the 3G, 3GS, 4 and 4S over on the iPhone side of things. More info can be found in the source link below.

Football fans score additional content in Sky Sports for iPad update

Football fans score additional content in Sky Sports for iPad update

The app devs over at Sky Sports are having a busy year, and after improving their iPad offering for the F1 season, they’re back with a “second screen” update for football (soccer) fans. Just in time for the start of the UK Premier League season, the new Football Match Centre adds a content bar alongside your chosen stream showing team and player info, in-depth stats of the match in progress and a hand-picked Twitter feed for related musings. You might think the devs deserve a break, but sadly there’s no time — next on the agenda is a similar update for the Champions League tournament, then they’re bringing the second screen to golf fans before the Ryder Cup starts next month.

Skype for Windows 8 preview, user interface revealed in web leak

Skype for Windows 8 preview, user interface revealed in web leak

Wondering what Skype’s Windows 8 interface might look like? Sure, you could use your imagination — and probably guess the design with a fair amount of accuracy — or you can poke around an early hands-on over at Neowin, complete with a half-dozen UI grabs. While still in preview state, the app appears to be “relatively solid,” enabling calls and chats with “little issue.” From the looks of it, touch fiends will be able to tap around just as accurately as their mouse-bound counterparts can click, with large buttons available throughout. Judging by the app’s current state, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect a more formal appearance any day now, letting early Windows 8 users take the native app for a spin before the rest of us get access in the fall. Hit up our source link below for a gallery of screen grabs.

Skype for Windows 8 shown off in leaked pics

Microsoft gobbled up Skype with an acquisition in May 2011, and it looks like the VoiP application will finally see a graphical overhaul with the upcoming release of Windows 8. Neowin has gotten its hands on a leaked version of the Skype for Windows 8, showing off the familiar aesthetic that Microsoft is aiming for in the latest version of its operating system. Neowin says that the app is still far from finished, but that most functions seem to be working without any issues.

The design of the new app means it’s especially finger friendly, which should come in handy on the various Windows RT tablets that OEMs are planning for release later in the year. Desktop users shouldn’t have any issues either, with Neowin saying that the app is fast and fluid and so far crashfree. Everything is very clean and simple having taken advantage of Microsoft’s Modern UI, with text tweaked to distinguish between the different people in a conversation, and the size of text has seen a boost to aid readability.

Skype for Windows 8 has been marked as an app preview, so either Microsoft is internally beta testing the software or plans to release a limited preview to the public in the near future. A similar situation occurred with Skype for Windows Phone, with Microsoft releasing a beta earlier this year for users to tinker with before making a final version available in April. Functionality of the app seems fully baked as well, with voice and chat working along with Skype’s credit services and pinned favorites.

The only real question remaining is when Microsoft will release this new version of Skype. The company hasn’t commented on the leak, but we imagine they’re holding off on a release until October 26th when Windows 8 will be officially released along with Microsoft’s Surface tablet.

Skype for Metro leaked

Check out the leaked Skype for Metro that was perused by the good people over at Neowin. This particular app is currently in its preview state, although initial impressions have proved to be favorable where it is said to deliver relatively solid performance. Having performed a fair number of calls with one and multi-person chats, there was no issue in particular that run out. The user interface has also been touted to be fluid and fast, with bouquets being given to the Skype team for making a good job at turning this application into a finger-friendly experience.

Not only that, not a single crash happened during the time of testing for Skype for Metro. Are you looking forward to Skype for Metro when it finally arrives? Let us hope that everything will be peachy keen for Metro users when that happens, as it would be a travesty if it was anything less. After all, Microsoft owns Skype, so they of all people would know how to best optimize their own app, right?
