Intergalactic Exchange Bureau Converts Your Federation Credits into Simoleons

Ever wondered how much money in video games and science fiction movies would be worth in our world? Well, thanks to the Intergalactic Exchange Bureau, you can now convert between a number of fictitious currencies.

intergalactic exchange bureau

Developed as a promotional stunt by Money in Advance, the Intergalactic Exchange Bureau can convert currencies from Star Wars, Star Trek, Skyrim, Fallout: New Vegas, Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire and a couple of others. Whether you’re paying in Gold dragons, Septims, Creds, or Galactic Credits, you’re covered. Though don’t try and pay in Rupees. They don’t take Rupees.

Of course, they didn’t have actual exchange rates to work from, and they came up with their own estimates based on their independent assessment of the value of objects in the various fictional universes. That said, real-world currency relationships were based on actual market values. Though what the price of frozen concentrated orange juice in New York has to do with the price of lightsabers in the Dagobah system, I don’t know.

Paper Skyrim Frost Dragon: Made from The Elder Scrolls?

It never ceases to amaze me just how much detail you can get in a paper sculpture. It blows my mind. Look at the level of detail on this papercrafted Skyrim frost dragon sculpture. It’s just amazing.

It was made by DeviantArtist DaiShiHUN who must be a level 10 Paper Mage. For this project he experimented with new textures and created a more stable base for it, which is a ruined Word Wall. This thing stands about 45 cm (~17 in) tall. He made it more sturdy by filling it with expanding foam.

Well, it looks pretty amazing. This makes me want to dust off my copy of Skyrim and play it again.

Mad Genius’ Motion Capture System brings Sony’s break-apart controller idea to life, and then some

Mad Genius' Motion Capture System Sony's breakapart DualShock 3

Remember that break-apart DualShock 3 idea for motion control Sony had five years ago? A new company named Mad Genius Controllers has surfaced with a working prototype that shows such a contraption working in spades. The setup uses a splittable controller and a processing unit to enable seamless motion control and spacial tracking on any title and system. Because Mad Genius doesn’t use any accelerometers or cameras like the current consoles, its creator notes that accuracy of up to 1/100th of an inch is possible.

In a video demo with an Xbox 360 version of Skyrim and a modified Xbox gamepad, certain gestures and movements even automate menu selections like a macro. One instance shows the controller being split and held like bow and arrow, highlighting that both sides are tracked in relation to each other — not to mention that the in-game character’s weapon automatically changes without any menu-digging by the user. The current version is merely a wired proof-of-concept, but Mad Genius plans to eventually make it wireless and hit Kickstarter for funding. In the meantime, you can build up anticipation for yourself by checking out the nearly 10-minute long video demo after the break. All that’s left is the inevitable Oculus Rift tie-in (like we’ve just done with this post).

Skyrim Legendary Edition Coming June 4 To PC, Xbox 360, PS3

Skyrim Legendary Edition Coming June 4 To PC, Xbox 360, PS3

We caught wind of Bethesda possibly planning on releasing a “Legendary Edition“ of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim due to Polish retailer Ultima leaking its existence by listing it prior to the company’s big announcement. It looks as though Ultima’s slip-up turned out to be true as Bethesda has just announced they will be releasing Skyrim: Legendary Edition.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Edition will include the original game and its official add-ons, DawnguardHeartfire and Dragonborn as well as a number of additional features such as combat cameras, mounted combat, a Legendary difficulty mode and the ability to level up your character infinitely through Legendary skills. That’s right – Skyrim fans. You’ll now be able to level up all of your skills to your heart’s content making your Dragonborn the Dragonborn that ever Dragonborned. (more…)

Be awed by Skyrim on the Oculus Rift, then let down by its limitations

Be awed by Skyrim on the Oculus Rift, then let down by its limitations

Here’s some exciting news: Skyrim, the game where you hunt and murder dragons, is relatively playable on the Oculus Rift VR headset. Rather, it’s workable, and should you have an Oculus dev kit (they’re shipping out right now), it’s not terribly hard to make the game play nice with the headset. Now here’s the sad news: navigating menus is nigh impossible, according to the Penny Arcade Report. Here’s PAR‘s Ben Kuchera on the issue, which he says goes deeper than Skryim:

“The Rift does not do well with menus, in-game text, or any user interfaces that aren’t purely graphical. It’s a major shortcoming of the hardware, and it makes games like Skyrim that throw many menus of that kind at you intolerable to play in a serious way. You’d have to remove the headset every time you need to read anything, much less compare weapons or assign skills.”

In our experience with the Rift headset, menus weren’t an issue — but that’s because it’s something we never encountered. Given the development nature of the device, demos were always very guided experiences, with games being loaded independently on a separate PC and not something press had to deal with while trying to use the headset. It’s possible that games like Skyrim will receive mods that make the (many, many) in-game menus usable, but it’s certain that support won’t come from the game’s publisher, Bethesda Softworks, as it recently finalized production on the game. For a taste of Skyrim running with the Oculus Rift, head past the break.

Skyrim Is Another Game Modded To Run On The Oculus Rift Virtual Reality Headset

As if playing Skyrim on the Kinect wasn’t cool enough with players being able to act out actions and even perform Dragon Shouts, now it seems that a Kotaku reader by the name of Chris has managed to modify the game to get it up and running on the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. The headset was designed to provide an immersive experience for gamers and we’ve already seen examples of games like Mirror’s Edge being modified to run on the headset, and how some companies are trying to up the ante by pairing the headset with a treadmill in a Team Fortress 2 game to make it feel more “real”. In any case this is pretty cool and just another example of how the headset has the incredible opportunity to make games a lot more fun than they already are! If you have a couple of minutes to spare, do check it out in the video above. In the meantime what other games would you like to see make its way onto the Oculus Rift, apart from the typical FPS games?

Bethesda Could Be Planning Skyrim Legendary Edition According To Polish Retailer

Bethesda Could Be Planning Skyrim Legendary Edition According To Polish RetailerJust the other day we learned that Skyrim would no longer be receiving new DLCs as the team would be moving on from the game, but if you’re just getting into Skyrim and you don’t want to have to bother downloading the DLCs one by one, Polish retailer Ultima might have let it leak that a Skyrim Legendary Edition could be announced in the near future. Basically the Legendary Edition will pack the original game and all three of its DLCs – Dragonborn, Hearthfire and Dawnguard. Bethesda has yet to announce this Legendary Edition pack, so for all we know this might not be real. In any case considering that the team behind Skyrim will be “moving on” and that no new DLCs will be made, we wouldn’t be surprised if they try their very best to milk whatever they can out of the franchise, and what better way than with a Legendary Edition, right? We’ll keep our eyes peeled for more info, so check back with us later for more updates!

Skyrim Will Not Receive Additional DLC As Team Will Be ‘Moving On’

Skyrim Will Not Receive Additional DLC As Team Will Be Moving On

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim released on Nov 11, 2011, and since its release, Bethesda has released three additional pieces of downloadable content, and it may look like that will be it for the game’s developer as their latest blog post hints at the end of additional content for the game.

Bethesda’s Skyrim team wrote in a blog post announcing they’ll be moving on to “our next adventure.” In the post, they say they’ve spent the past year and a half working on additional content for Skyrim which include game updates, a Creation Kit, Steam Workshop, Kinect support and, of course, the game’s additional pieces of DLC. “Parts of our team have also been in pre-production on our next major project, and that game is at the point where it requires the studio’s full attention to make it our biggest and best work yet.” (more…)
