Tesla teases 2016 compact crossover & Roadster replacement

Tesla‘s fourth and fifth cars will include a crossover SUV and a Roadster replacement, founder Elon Musk has teased, though drivers will need to wait until 2016 at the earliest to get behind the wheel. Although first on the electric car company’s agenda is the 2015 $30,000 sedan Tesla hopes will open up its audience considerably, Musk told Wired, work on the subsequent models is already underway, with a simultaneous launch promised.

The crossover will challenge BMW’s premium compact SUV, the X3, in the increasingly competitive (and lucrative) segment of those wanting off-road looks but without sacrificing on-road performance. As for the Roadster replacement, that will supposedly have “supercar performance, but not supercar pricing” Musk says, with a focus on a rewarding driver experience.

The new models aren’t just Tesla being over-ambitious: according to Musk, they’re an essential part of the car company making a profit from the investments it has made in underlying vehicle architecture. Neither has been officially named, though the founder did say that previous comments of the crossover being called the “Model E” were tongue-in-cheek and not to be taken seriously.

Tesla’s second car, the Model S, arrived with buyers in June, and the new sedan is expected to be slightly smaller as well as cheaper. Still, it will “look great and perform better than anything in its price range” Musk insists.

The third car, the Model X crossover unveiled earlier this year, is expected to hit roads in 2014.

Audi RS 5 Cabriolet pairs sun with sports performance

Audi‘s latest sports droptop, the RS 5 Cabriolet, has been officially revealed, a 450HP sun-lover capable of a 4.9s dash to 60mph while simultaneously getting you connected to the mobile web. The new four-seater convertible packs a V8 FSI direct injection 4.2-liter engine handmade in Audi’s Hungarian plant, routed through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with paddles lurking behind the three-spoke, flat-bottomed wheel.

There’s also permanent quattro all-wheel-drive which can shift power between the front and rear (up to 70-percent to the front or up to 85-percent to the back) depending on road conditions. An optional sport differential can improve handling even more, with active power distribution between the rear wheels; meanwhile, if getting off the starting block is the most important thing for you, there’s a Launch Control mode.

Of course, a cabriolet is also intended to be looked at, and lower-speed swishing is made all the more eye-catching with a matt aluminum ringed single-frame honeycomb grille, LED and Xenon Plus lights, extra-large air intakes, and a matt carbon spoiler lip at the rear. The fabric hood drops in 15s and opens back up in 17s, is available in four colors – black, grey, red, or brown – and can be used at speeds up to 31mph.

Inside, there’s leather and metal aplenty, with power sport seats, an optional MMI navigation plu system with multifunction controls on the wheel, and a lap timer included in the info-screen system. Audi has used special leather pigments to avoid the seats getting too toasty in the sun – handy if you don’t like your legs to be burnt but refuse to give up those summer short-shorts – and there’s the option of integrated air-con funneled through perforations in the leather and Alcantara itself.

Standard equipment keeps much to the Audi A5, with adaptive cruise control, brake-assist, an optional reversing camera, integrated WiFi hotspot, and more, but there’s also a set of pop-up aluminum plates if the RS 5 flips over. The Audi RS 5 Cabriolet will go on sale in early 2013 in Germany, priced from €88,500 ($113k). International availability – and pricing – is yet to be confirmed.

2013 VW Golf makes official debut

Volkswagen has outed the 2013 Golf, the seventh generation of the company’s bestselling hatchback, now lighter and almost a quarter more fuel efficient than before. Although outwardly similar to the model it replaces, the 2013 Golf is in fact redesigned completely, using VW’s “Modular Transverse Matrix” platform; it also gets new engines, offering from 85 PS to 150 PS of power and fuel economy improvements of 23-percent over the 6th-gen Golf.

Outside, the new Golf is 2.2-inches longer, while the wheelbase has stretched 2.3-inches over the old car. That not only improves internal space, VW says, but benefits the crash-protection structure and gives the car a sportier stance; you’d have to be a real Golf obsessive to notice that it’s 0.8-inches lower and 0.5-inches wider, however.

Despite the size change, the 2013 Golf sheds 220 pounds through a culmination of dieting. The air-con unit is six pounds lighter than before; the seats a full 15 pounds less. 80-percent of the car is high-strength steel (versus 66-percent before), and of that 28-percent is ultra-high-strength. For the Euro models, that means a 140 HP 1.4-liter turbo good for 49mpg, or 62mpg (EC figures, not EPA) from the 105 HP TDI Clean Diesel.

Inside, it’s another clean sweep for Volkswagen. Shoulder, leg, and cargo room are all bigger, with the hatch now opening for a more-easily accessible load area. Kit is yet to be confirmed, but there’s a 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system even on base-spec Euro models, while the top-end blows that up to an 8-inch unit with navigation.

Not all of the specs of the European 2013 Golf – the model VW showed off this week – will necessarily make it over to the North American version, though any design changes should be minor. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

2013 Nissan Sentra boosts economy with new CVT

Nissan has revealed its 2013 Sentra: lighter, more fuel efficient, but with more space inside than the model it replaces. Set to hit US roads come the fall, the new Sentra debuts a 1.8-liter engine and Xtronic CVT transmission that adds a sub-planetary gear for reduced fuel consumption, and in fact the combination is good for a claimed 34mpg combined. Inside, there’s the company’s latest NissanConnect with text-to-speech for SMS and Pandora streaming.

A six-speed manual is an option on the base Sentra, while the top-spec Sentra SL gets 17-inch alloys, auto headlights, and a tire pressure monitoring system that beeps the horn when you’ve topped the tires up sufficiently. Overall it’s 5-percent lighter than the previous model, but offers more accommodation and trunk space.

Inside, leather is an option, as is maple wood trim, while standard features include a 6-way manual driver’s seat, air conditioning, tilt/telescope steering wheel, power windows, remote keyless entry and a 4-speaker AM/FM/CD system. Hit the options sheet, however, and you can have dual-zone temperature control, a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD system with 4.3-inch LCD, USB iPod connectivity, Bluetooth hands-free, and an 8-speaker Bose system with an amp supposedly tuned specially to your choice of cloth or leather seats.

If you really push the boat out, though, you can have NissanConnect, centered around a 5.8-inch touchscreen and including spoken text messages, Bluetooth audio streaming, SiriusXM, live traffic updates, Google POIs, and Pandora access.

Vauxhall ADAM city car offers smartphone hub and LED star ceiling

GM’s Vauxhall has revealed its latest urban car, the Vauxhall ADAM, complete with cutesy looks and a bagful of technology to suit the smartphone-addicted. Set to hit roads in January 2013, the ADAM will be offered as a three-door, five-seater with a distinctive “floating roof” design and what Vauxhall claims are “almost unlimited visual combinations” outside and in. That even includes an LED “starlight” roof lining.

Two different roof colors, optional LED running lights, various interior trims and a lengthy sheet of add-ons to be ticked add up to around a million combinations, the GM subsidiary reckons. Under the hood will be one of three ecoFLEX four-cylinder petrol engines – a 1.2-litre 70PS and two 1.4-litre engines with either 87PS or 100PS – putting power down through a five-speed manual gearbox with optional stop/start for driving in traffic. A six-speed box is in the pipeline, and the ADAM will be first of the company’s range to get its next-gen direct injection and forced induction petrol engine.

Inside, there’s a top-spec audio, navigation and entertainment system (if you tick the box on the spec-sheet, of course) that centers on a 7-inch touchscreen LCD and uses Bluetooth among other things to hook up to your iPhone or Android device. It’ll pull in content from internet-based services, such as traffic updates in navigation apps, using their data connection too.

A heated steering wheel, Advanced Park Assist II (which identifies suitably-sized parking spots and then helps the driver navigate into them), and that fancy LED ceiling are all options, while front, side and head curtain airbags are all standard, together with ESP and hill-start assist. A “CITY mode” lightens the electronic power steering.

Vauxhall will begin taking ADAM orders after the car makes its debut appearance in the metal at the Paris Motor Show in September. Pricing is unconfirmed, but it’s expected to be around £11,000 ($17,000) for an entry-level model; GM hasn’t said whether it has any plans to bring ADAM to the US market.

Dodge targets creatives, oddballs and obsessives with 2013 Dart

Dodge is going all out to push the new sub-$16k Dart as not only the best car for new drivers, but one which ticks boxes with what might be considered a “counter-culture” audience for traditional marques. The car company will the new compact with a 90s “How to Change Cars Forever” spot featuring in the Major League Baseball (MLB) 2012 All-Star Game, but Dodge has also been pushing promotions with deviantART, ReverbNation and other sites to encourage creatives to consider the Dart.

Meanwhile, companion promotions with Transworld and .Free Clothing Co., encouraging people “to create Dart-inspired works of art, songs, clothing and skateboard decks” under the tagline “Inspired by You”, will also run between now and the end of August. Dodge is hoping to engage with more than 25m of the “technicallyminded, creative individuals not necessarily reached through traditional media.”

It’s not the first we’ve seen of Dodge ticking more than the average number of boxes in an attempt to make the Dart’s appeal stick. The company has been lavish with its spec sheet, too, throwing a pair of sizable displays at the dashboard – an 8.4-inch Uconnect central touchscreen, and a 7-inch customizable instrument cluster – and releasing a smartphone app that can remotely start up the car. It will also feature wireless charging.

The splashy campaign is part of Chrysler’s attempt to spend itself our of financial ruin, a strategy which seems to be working reasonably well so far. The Dart is showing up in dealerships now, priced from $15,995.

Bentley EXP 9 F SUV goes (very slightly) off-road on way to showrooms

Bentley’s EXP 9 F SUV concept has a face only a mother could love, but that hasn’t stopped the Crewe company from aiming its massive grille at showrooms. The pumped-up super luxury off-roader has made a new appearance, complete with a video showing its not-inconsiderable heft being thrown around roads – though it’s perhaps telling that the majority of the “off roading” consists of the rough stuff at the side of the tarmac.

When Bentley first showed off the concept, back at the Geneva Motor Show in March, it described it as a “potential” third model-line alongside the company’s existing Mulsanne and Continental ranges. Since then, Volkswagen-owned Bentley has all but ‘fessed up to production plans, detailing a potential choice of three powertrains including a 500 HP twin turbo V8, a plug-in hybrid V6, and a flagship 6L W12 engine.

Any of the three would likely be sufficient to smear Mother Nature across the not-inconsiderable hood. Meanwhile, inside there’s more leather, wood and metal, along with bespoke picnic hampers, a pull-out awning and a pair of concealed umbrellas.

“The concept’s appearance at Goodwood is part of a systematic and comprehensive process of gauging customer and public reaction to the idea of a Bentley SUV” the company says of this latest appearance. “EXP 9 F also highlights Bentley’s intent to build the fastest and most luxurious SUV in the world.”

Nuance and BMW partner on Dragon Drive! Messaging

Is there some kind of application that won’t feature Nuance’s Dragon voice recognition in the future? The company has announced a partnership with BMW that will see its Dragon Drive! Messaging service used in the 2012 BMW 7 Series, BMW 3 Series Touring, and BMW 3 Series ActiveHybrid. The 2012 BMW 7 Series will be the first car to feature the Messaging feature when it hits the market this month.

If you don’t know what Dragon Drive! Messaging is, you can probably take a guess. Users will be able to talk as normal and have the system transcribe messages and emails. That means hands will remain on the wheel and eyes on the road, reducing distractions and hopefully accidents as a result. There are some finer controls too, so you can speak certain commands to add spacing or shift paragraphs in emails, as well as adding correct punctuation.

The service will be free for the first 60 days, and after that you’ll have to pay Nuance a yearly subscription fee. Still, there’s support for six languages, which includes US and UK English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish. BMW also has some of its own voice commands, like calling contacts or pulling up turn-by-turn navigation.
