Xbox SmartGlass nabs Android update with support for 7-inch or larger tablets, screen sleep override

Xbox SmartGlass nabs update, now supports 7inch or larger tablets, alwayson Experiences

Microsoft’s SmartGlass for Android app has just hit version 1.5 thanks to a fresh update on Google Play. The app, which lets users control their XBox via a smartphone or tablet, will now be optimized to work on 7-inch and larger Android tablets. Other new features include an (unfortunately-worded) “always-on” Smartglass Experiences state, which actually just prevents your handset or slate from sleeping while it’s running, along with bug fixes and “numerous design and usability improvements.” We’ll have to give it a further play to see if there’s anything juicy buried in the latter, but meanwhile, you can grab it at the break.

Google Glasses make an appearance at the FCC

We already know that the Explorer Edition of Google Glasses is about to make its public debut shortly, but not before it makes a trip through the FCC first in order to get approval for public sale. An application for Google Glasses was spotted at the FCC, and we’re now getting a closer look at the details of the HUD-equipped glasses before they get handed out to developers.

In the FCC paperwork, the model number is referred to as “XEB,” and this was the first model that was tested back in November. The application mentions that the glasses will have 2.4GHz 802.11 b/g WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0, but it won’t support both at the same time, meaning communication can only be active through one or the other at a time.

Other than that, we’re not seeing anything else too special, but we’re positive that we’ll hear more about them in no time. Of course, we were promised a January 2013 release date for the glasses back during Google I/O, and now it looks like it won’t be for a couple more months, but a trip through the FCC is proof that these glasses are actually real, and that we’ll see them real soon.

We saw glimpses of Google’s Glass project earlier last year, and at Google I/O over the summer, the company went all-out to demonstrate the new technology. Developers will be able to get their hands on a pair soon, at a price of $1,500, while regular consumers are said to be able buy a pair sometime within a year from now.

Microsoft working on a fix for Halo 4 SmartGlass issues, arriving in ‘the coming weeks’

Microsoft working on a fix for Halo 4 SmartGlass issues, set to arrive in 'the coming weeks'

Microsoft’s SmartGlass and Microsoft’s Halo 4 apparently aren’t quite getting along on Windows Phone 8 devices. Using SmartGlass, Halo 4 players can normally access their stats and other info about their android supersoldier using the long-established Waypoint service — except for Windows Phone 8 users, apparently. A forum thread dating back to Halo 4‘s November launch highlights the issue — as Xbox.com forum user “Scion Eon” puts it: “Whenever I try to log into SmartGlass on my phone while playing Halo 4, I am immediately greeted with a message that says ‘Your device is missing certain required features.'” As it turns out, Mr. Eon isn’t the only one experiencing said connectivity issues — specific to Windows Phone 8 devices — and Microsoft’s aware of the situation.

“We are aware that there is an issue with the Xbox SmartGlass experience for ‘Halo Waypoint’ on Windows Phone 8 devices, which may prevent users from accessing Halo 4 player stats,” a Microsoft rep told us this afternoon. Thankfully, Redmond’s also taking care of a solution. “We are actively working on a fix and expect to have a solution within the coming weeks. We appreciate your patience as this gets resolved and apologize for any inconvenience this causes,” the statement reads. Of course, should you want to access Halo 4‘s Waypoint functionality on SmartGlass before that fix, you can always use Microsoft’s competitor’s devices. But then who’d do that?

ESPN Xbox App Receiving SmartGlass Integration This Month

Sports fans who have taken their obsession to know anything and everything sports related via their Xbox 360 will have more control over their experience as ESPN has announced it will be updating its application to support Microsoft’s SmartGlass application available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices.

The updated ESPN application will allow users to pick highlights, change video streams and look at statistics from their mobile device running SmartGlass with the content showing up on the user’s TV. Instead of your screen becoming cluttered with on-screen information, everything will be moved to your mobile device’s screen leaving the program taking center stage on your TV screen.

For those who have been looking for a two-screen experience to go along with their ESPN watching, the upcoming ESPN app update on the Xbox 360 will be something we’re sure sports fans will be looking forward to. The update will hit the Xbox 360 some time later this month. Let’s just hope it’s before all of those Christmas Day football games that we’re sure you’re counting down the days until, since not should Christmas be full of presents and holiday cheer, but obviously football as well.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: December 5, 2012

Welcome to Wednesday evening everyone. Today we saw images of what may be the rear housing of the iPhone 5S – yes, already. There aren’t too many differences between it and the rear housing for the iPhone 5, but there are enough to make the images noteworthy. The high-end HTC M7 is rumored for a Q1 2013 release, and it appears that HTC wants it to get on shelves before Samsung launches the Galaxy S IV, while Samsung’s iPhone 5-bashing Galaxy S III commercial was named that most viral tech ad of 2012.

Xbox Smartglass has been updated with support for the iPhone 5′s screen, and today Verizon is celebrating the two year anniversary of its 4G LTE launch. Instagram’s CEO sounded off on the split with Twitter today, saying that while it was intentional, it wasn’t an act of war, and we learned that Google Maps will soon be hitting the Wii U with augmented reality exploration. Verizon has filed a patent for a set top box with a camera built in, which sounds incredibly creepy, and Canalys says that 50% of all mobile app revenue went to just 25 developers last month.

The original Batmobile is going up for auction, and IDC is predicting that Apple will lose a significant amount of market share to Android and Windows in the coming years. AT&T is on track to have a record-breaking quarter, and astronomers have spotted a new solar system 450 light years away. Google Now has been updated with new features that frequent travelers are bound to like, we heard that Skype video messaging might be on the way shortly, and new fossil data is telling us that the first dinosaurs may have walked the planet 15 million years earlier than we originally thought.

Finally tonight, we have a number of original posts for you to have a look at. Don Reisinger asks if an unlocked iPhone 5 is really all that great, while Chris Burns tells us why the Nokia Lumia 620 might save Windows Phone 8. Chris Burns also gave us his review of the Sonos SUB, while Vincent Nguyen tells us what he thought of the all new 27-inch iMac. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, we hope you enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Xbox SmartGlass for Android updated with official 7-inch tablet support

Xbox SmartGlass for Android updated with official 7inch tablet support

Microsoft brought its SmartGlass Xbox 360 second screen app to Android last month, however official support was limited to smartphones. While many found that sideloading got the app running on their other devices, an update today has officially added support for tablets of the 7-inch variety. There’s also fixes for specific crashes tied to the achievements and settings screens, but not much else. If you’ve been waiting to bring your Nexus 7 along as GPS in Forza Horizon or control tracks in Dance Central 3, hit the source link to install the app straight from Google Play.

Karaoke for Xbox Live brings pay to play sing-alongs to your holiday parties

DNP Karaoke for Xbox Live brings pay to play singalongs to your holiday parties

Further milking the cash cow that is Xbox Live, Microsoft and Stingray Digital Group this week announced Karaoke for Xbox 360. Equipped with a robust library of over 8,000 licensed songs ranging from oldies to Hip-Hop and R&B, this potential cheesefest likely has something for your entire family to sing along with. Set to arrive in time for the holiday season, Karaoke appears to be the gift that keeps on charging. Unlike most music themed games that let you purchase content outright, its odd business model charges to stream tracks in time blocks of two, six and 24 hours. Aside from a few glasses of liquid courage eggnog, you’ll also need an Xbox 360 headset, wireless microphone, or a USB compatible mic to keep this party going. If you don’t fancy the spotlight, you can play the role of karaoke master by queuing up tunes through your mobile device via SmartGlass. Either that, or you can just sit back and record incriminating videos of loved ones belting out embarrassing love ballads after having one too many. The choice is yours.

Xbox SmartGlass for iOS Is Now Available

After launching on Android over a week ago, Xbox SmartGlass is now available for iOS. Go grab it on your iPhone or iPad so you can control your Xbox in a whole new awesomer way. The new SmartGlass app is actually an update to the old Xbox Live app, which is a little weird but whatever. More »

Xbox SmartGlass app comes to iOS

Xbox SmartGlass comes to iOS

It wasn’t all that long ago that Microsoft’s gaming-centric second screen app came to Android handsets, and now its iOS’s turn. It seems a shiny new SmartGlass app replaced the old My Xbox Live app in the App Store today with little fanfare, and is currently available for download for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touches running iOS 5.0 or later. As you might expect, the app allows your iDevice to serve as a remote and keypad for your Xbox 360, and its UI is nearly identical to the aforementioned Android version. Don’t believe us? Download the app at the source below and see for yourself.

[Thanks, David]
