Samsung shuffles: TV and mobile chiefs made co-CEOs

How many CEOs does one company need? If you’re Samsung, then the answer is three; the Korean firm just elevated two of its top execs to the role of co-CEO, with President Boo-keun Yoon and President J.K. Shin joining Vice Chairman Oh-Hyun Kwon. The new roles are being billed as recognition of the particular inputs the divisions of the two presidents make to Samsung’s business overall.

samsung_co-ceos

On the one hand, there’s Boo-keun Yoon, who heads Samsung’s TV division. “Under President Yoon, Samsung’s TV business maintained and solidified its global leadership position after becoming global No. 1 in 2006″ Samsung said in a statement.

Meanwhile, J.K. Shin has helped guide Samsung’s phone division to its current position of strength, notably with the launch of the GALAXY S 4 revealed yesterday. “Under President Shin, Samsung’s mobile business posted significant growth” Samsung said, “and attained global No.1 position in smartphones in 2011 and in overall mobile phones in 2012.”

Both presidents will remain in charge of their respective divisions, while Oh-Hyun Kwon keeps his position at the head of Samsung Electronics’ component division. He also continues as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Samsung included SwiftKey predictive keyboard in Galaxy S IV

Rumor had it that Samsung had integrated SwiftKey into its newly launched Galaxy S IV flagship handset, but nothing was confirmed. Now word has come from SwiftKey’s co-founder in an emailed statement to Forbes stating that Samsung has, indeed, utilized the predictive keyboard, adding onto the myriad of other features offered by the smartphone.

P3142787-galaxy-s-4-580x326

This is good news for both future Galaxy S IV owners and SwiftKey alike, which, according to Forbes, is able to boast about a major partnership with a manufacturer for the first time. In other instances where it has licensed its technology, the company has been forced to keep quiet about the deals due to terms of confidentiality.

SwiftKey’s co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Ben Medlock had this to say: “We are excited to confirm that Samsung has chosen SwiftKey’s innovative keyboard technology to be at the heart of its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4. This is fantastic progress for our vision of bringing the best touchscreen typing experience to as many people as possible.”

For those who don’t know, the company behind SwiftKey was founded in late 2008 by two Cambridge graduates, who went on to launch their popular predictive keyboard in 2010. The app works by learning the words commonly used by the handset’s owner as he or she types. This allows SwiftKey to offer predictive functionality.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Specs Revealed: Price and Release Date to Come

Samsung tonight revealed the much-anticipated follow up to its insanely popular Galaxy S3 smartphone, the Galaxy S4, which will ship with the latest build of Android Jelly Bean, 4.2.2.

samsung galaxy s4

The Galaxy S4 has a more-than-ample 5-inch 1920 x 1080 Super AMOLED 441ppi display, that fills out almost the entire face of the phone. While the phone is a skinch larger than the Galaxy S3, it weighs virtually the same, at just 130g. Dimensions are appx. 5.3″ long by 2.7″ wide, and just 7.9mm thin – just a fraction of a millimeter thicker than the svelte iPhone 5.

samsung galaxy s4 2

The phone offers an upgraded 13-megapixel rear camera, with nifty features like a “Drama Shot” which can capture numerous photos in rapid succession and superimpose them, to create a composite motion image.

It can also shoot images from both the front and rear 2-megapixel cameras simultaneously so you can see a front and rear view on a single image, or can also be used for three-way chats. You can also annotate still images along with sound snippets that you can play back along with them – though I think that idea seems sort of silly when you could just shoot video.

Some of the whiz-bang features of the phone which may or may not prove useful in the real world are the ability to scroll up and down the screen by just tilting up or down, as well as the being able to interact with content by hovering your finger over relevant locations on the screen. Samsung also added a “Smart Pause” feature which uses the front-facing camera to automatically stops playing video when you look away from the screen, and resumes when you start looking again.

Other cool features include the S Translator, which provides voice-based translation service, S Voice Drive – hands-free driving mode, and Group Play, which lets you share music and sync it to up to eight other phones by simply bumping phones together.

The S4 has 2GB of system memory, and storage is available in 16, 32 and 64GB flavors, along with a microSD slot for up to 64GB additional storage. Plus, the phone also has a removable battery – thank goodness. Of course, it’ll offer both 3G and 4G LTE versions with global support, as well as 802.11 b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity. The 4G LTE is supposed to offer data download speeds up to 100Mbps and upload speeds up to 50Mbps on supported networks. I also like how they built in an infrared transmitter so you can use the phone as a remote for your TV and other media equipment without extra hardware.

The phone will sport a large 2,600 mAh battery – 500 mAh more than the S3 came with. In order to enable some of the new features, the Galaxy S4 has a new front infrared sensor and a temperature and humidity sensor.

CPU specs haven’t officially been announced, but it’s been said that the Galaxy S4 is powered by a ridiculously spec’d Samsung Exynos 5 Octa-Core CPU, with Quad Cortex-A15 cores running at 1.6GHz AND Quad Cortex-A7 cores clocked at 1.2GHz or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 CPU clocked at 1.9GHz (depending on market), and a PowerVR SGX 544MP3 GPU running at up to 533MHz or the Adreno 320 GPU (depending on market.)

Numerous accessories are planned for the launch, including a wireless fitness band called the S Band, which can measure sleep and exercise data and transmit it the S-Health app running on the phone.

There’s also a game pad in the works which provides dual analog sticks shoulder buttons, D-Pad and everything else you need to enjoy tactile gameplay on the phone’s lovely full HD screen.

For more details, you can check out the full product reveal by jumping to 40 minutes into the video below. It starts getting awfully cheesy around the 60 minute mark, so be prepared.

Surprisingly, Samsung didn’t reveal the pricing or an exact release date for the Galaxy S4 tonight, but word on the street is that we should start seeing the S4 in stores sometime this April.

Verizon now accepting Blackberry Z10 pre-orders

More than a few weeks after its launch, the Blackberry Z10 is finally nearing its release date, with it going up for pre-order for T-Mobile business customers and AT&T subscribers earlier this week. As we reported yesterday, the handset also became available for pre-order from Verizon at 8AM this morning. It will be available in stores March 28.

blackberry_z10_peeking

Verizon boasts a black version of the Blackberry Z10 in addition to the white one offered by AT&T. The handset costs $200 with a two-year contract, a price that many feel is too steep for a phone that the company is hinging so much on. While many handsets have been launched at this price point, including the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III, Blackberry isn’t a major player in the market, leading some to question the wisdom in the pricing. You can read more about this in our write up here.

If you’re a Blackberry faithful, however, or want to give the platform a shot and aren’t afraid to drop $200 and take on a new 2-year contract, you can head over to Verizon and place your order now. Still undecided? Read our review of the Blackberry Z10 to get a better idea of whether it’s the phone for you.

The BB Z10 features a 4.2-inch 1280 x 768 display, as well as a 2-megapixel front camera and an 8-megapixel rear camera with an LED flash. Inside, users will find a Qualcomm MSM8960 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 2GB of RAM, as well as 16GB of internal storage. There’s a microSD slot for storage expansion with support for up to 32GB.

Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 gets torn asunder, reveals its innards

Samsung's Galaxy S 4 gets torn asunder, reveals its innards

Now that we’ve officially seen the Galaxy S 4 unveiled in a Broadway-like production, why not take a look inside it? Chinese outlet IT168, which gave us a peek at the flagship earlier today, couldn’t resist tearing one open just before the handset’s official reveal. What went under the screwdriver in this instance was a 3G-only China Unicom version of the GS4 packing dual SIM slots and the expected Exynos 5 Octa CPU, 2GB of RAM, 13 megapixel camera and 2,600mAH battery. Samsung Galaxy S 4 accessories: cases, calorie counting and gamepads

What’s a fancy new smartphone without accessories? Don’t ask the Galaxy S 4 — it’s already planning to augment its software tricks with scales, fitness bands and of course, the requisite screen cover. Samsung’s latest flagship won’t settle for a mere flip cover, however, its S View Cover features a window to the Galaxy S 4’s 5-inch Super AMOLED screen, allowing users to peek at the display and even answer calls without exposing their device. There’s goodies for the health conscious to buy, too: the jawbone-like S band and a Samsung branded body scale, both of which sync with the device’s S Health software. The device even has gamers covered, teasing a prototype gamepad with striking resemblance to the beloved Xbox 360 gamepad. Sammy didn’t mention when these accessories would hit the market (or at what price), but we’ll keep our ear to the ground for future details.

Samsung’s Knox security solution to launch with Galaxy S 4

Samsung's Knox security solution to launch with Galaxy S 4

Back at Mobile World Congress, Samsung filled us in about its Knox security suite, and now it’s just announced that it’ll ship on the Galaxy S 4. In case you need your memory jogged, Knox focuses on providing enterprise security features that let business and personal content coexist on the same handset. Like BlackBerry Balance, the solution cordons off work-related apps, email accounts and the like in secure containers, while keeping personal things without password protection. Though the GS4 will nab Knox first, other Samsung devices are set to receive it as well.

Samsung unveils the Galaxy S 4’s software tricks: camera modes, Story Album, S Voice Drive and more

Samsung unveils the Galaxy S 4's software tricks camera modes, Story Album, S Translate and more

Samsung is revealing what Smart software additions the Galaxy S 4 will bring to the table, and they’re well beyond what’s been rumored. The camera is one of the biggest focuses, borrowing much from the Galaxy Camera: Cinema Photo captures still images with moving backgrounds, a Drama Shot burst mode that creates animated GIFs, an Eraser mode to remove unwanted background subjects, and a Sound & Shot mode that puts audio in the background of still images. A Story Album automatically creates photo albums based on common details such as location and time. And did we mention that it can shoot photos and video from both the front and back cameras at the same time?

That’s just the start. AirView now works with your finger, rather than a pen, and is effective right from the lock screen. Adapt Display and Adapt Sound automatically tune the picture and speakers for varying viewing conditions, and WatchOn uses a built-in IR blaster to tune your TV. S Translate, meanwhile, will take both spoken and written words and translate them through several languages, inside of multiple apps. S Voice has been upgraded to S Voice Drive to let drivers get navigation, find points of interest and otherwise interact with the phone without having to take any hands off the wheel. S Health, which Samsung initially mentioned last year, is around to track calories and steps through accessories such as S band, a body scale and a heart rate monitor.

Like to do things that involve more than one person? There’s more still. ChatOn has been upgraded to support video chat, and Group Play both allows for sharing songs in a surround mode or playing local multiplayer games — when it’s supported, that is. All told, there’s a small deluge of new features that could amount to a lot, even excluding new hands-free elements like Smart Scroll. Check after the break for a quick preview video and the press release.

SlashGear 101: The Samsung GALAXY S 4

With the Samsung GALAXY S 4 the company has focused on four key areas that they’ve found are most important for everyday life fulfillment, the first being Enjoyment. Creating and nurturing relationships is the second, Everyday Convenience is the third, and the fourth and final pillar is Health and Wellness. With this release, Samsung isn’t just creating a smartphone that you’ll integrate into your life, they’re creating a conduit through which you’ll be living your life in a more pleasant, healthy, and convenient way.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

In the release of the Samsung GALAXY S 4 you’ll have noticed the look and feel of the device to be largely similar to what we’ve experienced before with the Samsung Galaxy S III and the Note series after the Note II. This is done to keep you in the Samsung natural-feeling aesthetic, one that’s proven itself to be monumentally successful over the past year in many products.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This device works with a 5-inch display and has had its bezel minimized – it’s smaller than it’s been on any Samsung device before. This minimized battery creates a feeling that you’re using one massive display rather than a display embedded in a smartphone. Covering the display you’ll find the most advanced reinforced protection with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This viewing experience is enhanced to the max with Full HD Super AMOLED display technology. You’ll be working with 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution, that’s 441 PPI across the 5-inch display and by far the sharpest smart device display offered by Samsung thus far. This is also one of the sharpest displays on a smartphone in the industry today, right up next to the HTC One (468 PPI) and the DROID DNA (440 PPI).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As for photography and videography equipment, you’ll be starting with a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera and a 2 megapixel front-facing camera. These cameras work with a set of new software outlined in the timeline below, specifically in the “Enjoyment” section – a must-see!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Inside you’ll find that the battery is more powerful than before (2600 mAh, mind you) while the overall device is thinner than the Galaxy S III. The GALAXY S4 weighs in at 130g and is slim as ever with just 7.9mm to its name.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The GALAXY S4 is lighter than its predecessor and it’s more powerful “in all ways” as Samsung notes. This device works with a Qualcomm quad-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz as well as a Samsung Exynos 1.6Ghz “Octa” processor depending on where you get the device – you’ll know final location and hardware when release information is final in your area of the planet.

You’ll also be backed up by 2GB RAM per the standard fare in essentially every top-tier smartphone on the market today. The GALAXY S4 will be released in three different internal storage capacities, 16, 32, and 64GB, each of these coming with a microSD card slot for 64GB memory expansion. Depending on the carrier you’re working with, one, two, or all three versions will be available to you starting in early April, 2013.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As the GALAXY S4 supports HSPA+42 Mbps as well as 4G LTE, you’ll find this device released on many – if not all – of your favorite carriers around the world. Inside the USA we’ll see the device released on each of the top four mobile carriers as well as Cricket, the cutest of the USA carriers.

Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean will be coming with the device right out of the box with the company’s newest version of TouchWiz integrated for a fully Samsung-friendly experience. For more information on the software side of this device, you’ll want to check out the four pillars of excellence mentioned in the first paragraph of this post. Each of these four pillars can be found in the timeline below – check it out!
