HTC One leaks in black with carrier pricing

This week the HTC One has leaked once again, this time in a lovely black iteration complete with price points on three of the top four major carriers in the United States. This bodes well for the manufacturer as their launch with the HTC One X and HTC One S from a bit less than a year ago ended up not doing as well as they’d expected, largely due to carrier exclusives – rather than the wide release we’re seeing here, that is. Will this be HTC’s return to prominence with a single smartphone to rule them all?

HTC_One_black-274x540

With the HTC One it would appear that we’re going to see two different colors right out of the gate, including the white/silver version we saw earlier this week and the black we’re seeing today. This black version has been leaked courtesy of Unwired View’s @evleaks, the same source as the white/silver version. One point you really should be noting here is that this device works with a wholly unique two-button setup – not seen on any Android smartphone in the past.

BC0-LdSCUAELIpm-268x5402

This device is being tipped as coming to AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint all at once, each of them coming together some time in early March. Verizon has been tipped to be getting this device in a slightly different configuration on the 22nd of March as well, perhaps as a refresh of the DROID DNA. The release price for the HTC One has been tipped as $199 USD for a 32GB internal storage version and $299 USD for a 64GB version, both versions being priced the same on each of the three carriers besides Verizon.

The specifications for this device remain quite standard through the leaked ranks, those being a 4.7-inch full HD display with a quad-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor under the hood. This device is also tipped to be coming with enhanced photography, videography, and audio support as well. Stay tuned to SlashGear for more information as we head to the big HTC event next week in NYC – we’ll be there with bells on!

LG Optimus G Pro revealed with beastly Full HD display

This week the folks at LG have revealed their fair share of smartphones, not the least of them being the LG Optimus G Pro, a device we’ve seen several peeks of before. This device works with a massive 5.5-inch display with Full HD resolution and a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor. This device will be unleashed in South Korea first and has not yet been confirmed for Europe or the United States.

awgeaw

The device we’re seeing here is an extension of the excellence we’ve already seen both inside and outside of the United States with the LG Optimus G. That device worked with the first quad-core processor in a smartphone to hit the United States and also became the basis for the design of the multi-national ultra-popular Google Nexus 4. With sales of the LG-made Nexus 4 and Optimus G remaining strong several months after release, LG clearly hopes to extend their success through to Spring.

g_main_6

This LG Optimus G Pro comes with a beastly 3,140 mAh battery that’ll last you all night long and will be popping up with a 13 megapixel camera on its back. Inside you’ll also find 2GB of RAM, 32GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot for memory extension. This device is bringing on native 4G LTE connectivity for South Korean carriers as well.

BONUS: This device will be coming in Platinum White and Indego Black via NTT Docomo – how those shades differ from regular white and black, we do not know!

Have a peek at the timeline below for more information on the LG Optimus G series and be sure to check out the other bits LG has revealed this week. The LG Optimus L7 II, L5II, and L3 II have all been shown off to take on the 2013 mainstream market. We’ll be getting our hands on these devices without a doubt when we head to Mobile World Congress 2013 – join us later this month!

LG Optimus G Pro+ spotted with extra massive display

The LG Optimus G was ushered in with a bang last year, bringing on the first look we’d had at the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor – and here in 2013 it’s looking like the face of the device is about to get a whole lot larger. With the original Optimus G having a very likely large amount of sales cannibalized by the Google Nexus 4, it’s no wonder that LG is likely thinking about bringing not one, but two new models to the market here in the first half of the year. The first reveal was the LG Optimus G Pro with a lovely 5-inch display – now it’s time to get even larger.

LG-Optimus-G-Pro-phone

This LG Optimus Pro+ device (as it’s temporarily being code-named here) will be appearing in China with a fabulous 5.5-inch HD display with IPS LCD technology running at a monstrous 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. With 2GB of RAM under the hood, this Optimus G Pro+ would be bringing the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor once again, this time clocked at 1.7GHz per core with all the best connectivity to back it all up.

Also inside you’ll find 32GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot capable of holding 32GB cards (with the possibility of 64GB cards before this device hits the market), and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean right out of the box. This device will also be appearing with a 13 megapixel camera on the back, 2.1 megapixel camera on the front, and a 3140 mAh battery inside.

Of course this device will be working with NFC as well as Bluetooth 4.0 and will be revealed soon. While it’s not officially been announced by LG, we’re expecting to see this model at Mobile World Congress 2013. Catch us there in Barcelona later this month in our fabulous MWC 2013 tag portal!

ZTE Blade III reaches the UK through Virgin Media

Image

The ZTE Blade III has been slowly spreading its cost-conscious influence across Europe since the fall, yet it curiously danced around the UK. That elusiveness is over now that Virgin Media has picked up the entry-level Android 4.0 phone for itself. It’s a match for mainland Europe’s version with a 4-inch WVGA screen, a 1GHz Snapdragon, a 5-megapixel camera, 3G data and 4GB of built-in storage with a microSD slot for more. Virgin is mostly counting on pricing to make the difference: the Blade III costs just £80 to buy outright for pay-as-you-go service, and it’s free for customers who pay as little as £18 per month (£13 for Virgin loyalists) on a contract. If you don’t mind the irony of a Blade phone that isn’t especially cutting-edge, it’s a tempting deal.

Qualcomm Q1 2013 earnings shows surprise boost in future fiscal season

This week the folks at Qualcomm have revealed earnings for their fiscal Q1 of 2013, offering rather positive news for shareholders: a better outlook for the rest of the year than previously expected. With announcements of the new Snapdragon 800 and 600 series processors earlier this month, Qualcomm has revealed that they’re now in a position that’s ripe for growth throughout the upcoming year: “We are pleased to be raising our revenue and earnings guidance for fiscal 2013.”

qualcommfirst

Qualcomm’s fiscal Q1 for 2013 included the months leading up to December 30, 2012, and included a fabulous $6.02 billion in revenue for the group, this representing a 29% boost compared to the same quarter one year ago. This is also a 24% upward trend compared to the company’s Q4 of 2012, that being the quarter that went directly before the one being reported today. Operating income for Q1 2013 went up 35% year-over-year to $2.09 billion USD while Net income came to $1.91 billion, that being 36% more than it was last year at this same time.

The operating cash flow reported by Qualcomm for this quarter was a mighty $1.98 billion USD, this equaling out to be 33 percent of revenues and a boost of 11% year-over-year. As far as Qualcomm’s “key business metrics” for the quarter go, MSM chip shipments were reported to have reached 182 million units, this representing a 17 percent growth in shipments compared to this same quarter one year ago. Total device sales for this quarter ended up being an amazing $53.3 billion USD total, that being 29% higher than it was one year ago.

secondnive

This quarter also showed an estimated 233 to 237 million 3G/4G device shipments, each of these between the prices of $224 and $230 on average – that’s massive. Qualcomm has reported their cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities to have totaled $28.4 billion USD at the end of the quarter being reported here, this compared to $22 billion on year ago. Have a peek at the timeline below to see other recent Qualcomm accomplishments and big announcements to see where the company is headed in 2013 – up and up!

Samsung ATIV Odyssey Hands-on and Unboxing

This afternoon we’ve gotten our hands on the Samsung ATIV Odyssey for the first time off the showroom floor, and this Windows Phone 8 combination with Samsung hardware prowess is looking like a winner right out of the box. This machine is going to be available to you starting today from Verizon complete with 4G LTE and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core 1.5GHz processor under a lovely 4-inch WVGA display. Will this new Samsung hero for the Windows Phone 8 universe be enough to take out the Nokia Lumia 822 and HTC Windows Phone 8X competition?

IMG_7676

This machine is smooth to the touch, has a hard plastic back and sides, and makes little effort to differentiate itself (on the outside) from the Samsung Focus 1 and 2 as far as basic aesthetics go. When it comes to the actual largeness of the display, the brightness, the color, and the innards of this device as well, you’ll find that the ATIV Odyssey is a whole new show. In addition to working with a microSD card slot with the ability to hold 64GB cards, you’ll find this device more than ready to move forward with Microsoft’s newest mobile operating system as well.

IMG_7669

With a 2,100 mAh battery under the back panel of this machine we’re expecting some rather excellent up-time across the day. We’ve also got a 5 megapixel camera on the back, a 1.2 megapixel camera on the front, and Qualcomm’s support for image processing inside that Snapdragon – so we’re expecting some lovely photo and video results in the very near future. This machine comes with 1GB of RAM to handle the most powerful apps available for Windows Phone today, and the full package seems to be, at the moment, a rather solid package for the Microsoft-loving masses.

The gallery you’re having a peek at here includes a small set of photos taken with the camera on this phone. Note that the photos taken of the biker are taken through a window, so they are a bit more hazy than they would be had they been taking without said window outside. We’ll have more photos and demo video in the final review, coming up soon!

Sony Xperia Tablet Z revealed with not-quite-Nexus specs

Today Sony has made a bit of a soft announcement of their next-generation hero tablet, that being the Xperia Tablet Z: complete with a quad-core processor and a rather thin body. This machine is just about as strait up rectangular a tablet as we’ve ever seen with extremely tight (but not quite square) corners and what appears to be a slightly odd aspect ratio bezel around its 10.1-inch display. The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is also set to bring on none other than Sony’s own “S-Force” virtual surround sound system – strange stuff!

xperia-tablet-z-1

The reason we’re not exactly 100% solid on the specifications as we’d normally be with a release straight from the manufacturer is the fact that this is a bit of a third-hand sort of situation. While we see Engadget posting it from Blog of Mobile, they in turn are getting it from Sony Mobile‘s Japan-based hub. This means that even though this tablet will be hitting shelves in Japan with these specifications, we’ll likely see more than a couple changes by the time we see it in the USA (or outside the islands, for that matter).

xperia-tablet-z-3

This tablet is set to come in at least two color combination – on the back, anyway – and it’ll be coming with no less than the excellent Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8064 quad-core SoC clocked in at 1.5GHz. This will be paired with 2GB of RAM, 4G LTE connectivity (and a wi-fi only edition we must assume) as well as an 8.1-megapixel camera on the back. This back-facing camera works with Exmore R technology and will likely be a star in Sony’s promotion of the unit overall.

xperia-tablet-z-2

The display on this machine is not quite as massively dense with pixels as the Google Nexus 10, but it’s tight nonetheless: 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution working with Mobile Bravia Engine 2 technology – we’ll see soon what kind of display it is, be it IPS or AMOLED – with the jumps we’re seeing here over previous model Xperia tablets, there’s no knowing what the Sony team is bringing forth. This tablet also works with NFC, has a microSD card slot for memory expansion, and the whole package is both waterproof and dustproof (though the exact amount of both we’re still waiting on, too).

Inside the machine you’ll find a 6,000mAh battery and the whole unit will be coming in at a super thin 6.9mm and 495g in weight. This machine is a rather large leap forward for Sony from any of their previous tablets – have a peek at our recent review of the Tegra 3-toting Xperia Tablet S to see how far the company has come in a relatively short time. Note the software there too, because we’re quite likely going to be seeing something rather similar soon!

Expect to see this at Mobile World Congress 2013 next month – we’ll be there with bells on!

YotaPhone hands-on

To be completely honest, the YotaPhone is one of devices I’ve been most looking forward to seeing during Slashgear’s stay here at CES 2013. The device was announced last year and was immediately turning heads with its dual-screen setup. Dual-screen phones are nothing new, but the folks at Yota have put their own little spin on the dual-screen setup: instead of offering two LCD screens, the YotaPhone sports an HD LCD display on the front, and an eInk display around the back.

P1050570

Of course, with dual-screen phones, manufacturers run the risk of having their devices ultimately come off as nothing more than gimmicky. The YotaPhone has its share of dissenters, but I’m pleased to report that it seems like a very solid device. We’ve got some powerful hardware running under the hood, including a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, and a custom 2,100mAh battery, so there’s plenty to get excited about for the hardware enthusiast (though admittedly, it would have been great to see a quad-core CPU in place of the dual-core).

Both of the displays come in at 4.3-inches in size, with the LCD displaying at 1280×720 resolution. That naturally means 720p HD, so visuals are nice and sharp, and if you’re a fan of eInk displays, the YotaPhone’s rear screen will certainly please. Add to that a rear-facing 12MP camera and you’ve got a phone with one solid set of specs.

Interestingly, the folks at Yota have ditched buttons and have instead opted for gesture controls. This was something I was a bit hesitant about, but as it turns out, gesture controls work really well and seem like a intuitive replacement for the Android navigation buttons we’re all familiar with. While we’re on the topic of Android, it’s worth pointing out that Yota expects its device to be running Android 4.2 by the time in launches here in North America, but unfortunately the device we saw today was only running Android 4.1. Still, having Jelly Bean out of the box is always a good thing, so you won’t hear many complaints from me.

P1050579

The phone is pretty lightweight and feels good in the hand, though there is a bit of a curve to both of the displays, which are each kept safe behind a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It’s important to keep in mind that the device we saw today is still only a prototype, so aspects of its design could change by the time the it launches here in North America. At any rate, I can safely say that the YotaPhone is every bit as cool as I was hoping it would be, but there are still a few kinks to iron out in the weeks and months to come. Yota says that it’s aiming for a late 2013 launch in North America, so expect to be seeing much more of the YotaPhone as we get closer to the end of the year. As always, you can find all of our coverage from CES 2013 at our CES portal, so be sure to have a look at that!

T-Mobile’s 4G Connect offers free 200MB of monthly data on PCs and tablets (hands-on)

TMobile's 4G Connect offers free 200MB of monthly data on PCs and tablets handson

T-Mobile knows that the easiest way to get new customers is to give away your service for free, and it’s handing access out like so much candy with its new 4G Connect strategy. Similar to what we’ve seen for Chromebooks, the deal supplies 200MB of free data every month for up to two years, right out of the box. Those who need more than casual email checks on the road just need to pay T-Mobile’s prepaid rates to keep the broadband going. The Dell Inspiron 14z and HP Pavilion dm1 are the only devices available for now that qualify for the 4G Connect plan, but more are lined up for 2013, including (but not exclusively) devices with Qualcomm’s Gobi chipsets in PCs or its Snapdragon chips in Windows RT tablets. T-Mobile tells us that we won’t have to hunt down specific Magenta models, either — once a PC line includes 4G Connect, every American variant should carry the needed modem as a matter of course.

We had the opportunity to try a Pavilion dm1 with 4G Connect, and it’s clear that T-Mobile is largely letting the PC builder take priority. The hardware is very much vanilla on the outside. Most of what you’ll notice, apart from reasonably fast HSPA+ data when you’re away from WiFi, is a custom T-Mobile app. Both a Live Tile and the full app will show usage; diving in shows everything in a simple not-Metro layout with extra options for SMS messaging and topping up when the bandwidth runs low. Apart from having to register the PC in the first place, the service is as simple as we’d care to see. Now, where’s our LTE connection?
