Sony camera UI leaks from 'Honami' system dump, gets ported to existing Xperia devices

We’ve been hearing stacks of rumors recently about a Sony flagship called Honami, which will supposedly come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 and a 20-megapixel camera. A system dump, purportedly from a Honami phone, surfaced last week and now XDA developer “krabappel2548” has managed to dissect the camera app and get it working on some existing Xperia devices — including the Xperia Z, ZL and Tablet Z, so long as they’ve been suitably prepped for hacking. From the resulting screenshots, it looks like Sony is set to introduce features such as augmented reality, “Time shift” (which sounds a lot like HTC’s Zoe feature), live filters and an image search engine dubbed “Info-eye.” All of this sounds reasonably in tune with the “One Sony” strategy of focusing on mobile and imaging. If Honami is real, and if it comes with the right hardware to support the updated camera module, it could be a big deal.

Welcome to Samsung Day, 2013. While we wait on some big (and little) product launches this afternoon, here’s a quick bite to keep us going: an interesting processor spec mentioned in the user manual for the SHV-E330S, which we think will be the new LTE-Advanced variant of the Galaxy S 4 intended for South Korea. How the folks at RBmen spotted it we have no idea, but one of the pages (shown after the break) confirms the presence of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974), which not only supports the new double-speed LTE standard but is also something of a beast when it comes to general performance. This isn’t especially relevant to a Western audience, perhaps, except that it marginally increases the probability that we’ll see this same powerhouse inside the rumored Galaxy Note III, since Samsung evidently feels comfortable with Qualcomm’s flagship silicon — and it can’t have failed to notice that LG’s engineers are fond of it too.

LG and Qualcomm have enjoyed a close relationship for mobile phone chips, and it appears that will continue with the next Optimus G device, which is due in Q3. A press release tonight promises it will feature a Snapdragon 800 CPU for “the ultimate mobile experience” — a claim benchmarks seem to back up. Qualcomm says the new 800 chip can best the original Optimus G’s S4 Pro by “up to 75 percent” in performance, although what may be more interesting is how this aligns with a LS980 handset that recently leaked on Sprint’s website. The release also highlights the new chip’s ability to use LTE Advanced carrier aggregation for even faster bandwidth speeds, so while a Galaxy S 4 variant may deliver the feature first, it probably won’t be alone for long.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MDP benchmarks prepare for ludicrous speed

Today we had a chance to play with Qualcomm’s latest MDP devices (tablet and phone) which pack the company’s mighty Snapdragon 800 SoC (MSM8974). The tablet is slightly larger than than last year’s and features an 11.6-inch 1,920 x 1,080-pixel display, 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM, 32GB of built-in flash storage (with microSD expansion), USB 3.0 support and a 12 megapixel AF rear camera with flash (2MP fixed-focus in front). All of this is crammed into a slim (0.46 inches / 11.7mm) chassis that’s powered by a 3,400mAh Li-ion battery and incorporates a bevvy of radios (LTE band 17, WiFi ac, Bluetooth 4 LE, GPS, NFC) and sensors (including pressure and humidity).

The phone shares most of the tablet’s specs but swaps the screen for a 4.3-inch panel (1,280 x 720 pixels) and the battery for a smaller (1,500mAh) pack. We put these Snapdragon 800-equipped MDPs through their paces by running our usual suite of benchmarks (plus a few more). The results? Prepare for ludicrous speed! More after the break.

The flood of Snapdragon 800 hardware hasn’t arrived just yet, but Qualcomm says it expects we’ll see Windows RT 8.1 devices with their flagship silicon “later this year.” There’s still no word on which manufacturers will be using the San Diego-based firm’s processors, but you can be sure the resulting devices will be particularly snappy and pack LTE connectivity. If the HTC One is just too small for your needs, perhaps the latest rumor will perk you up: a 5.9-inch HTC device code-named the T6 is purportedly in development. Notable leakster @evleaks has dug up a few details about this handset, and — if true — this is going to be one heck of a refresh to the company’s premier lineup. Here’s what we’ve heard so far: it’s consistent with the One’s general look, sports a 1080p display, a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 chipset (MSM8974), BoomSound, an OIS-equipped UltraPixel camera, 2GB RAM and a 3,300mAh battery. The T6 will supposedly feature a dedicated pen / stylus as well as a biometric fingerprint scanner around the back. Curiously, it’s also reported that the T6 will have a microSD slot — an addition that would be inconsistent with HTC’s current design strategy — and will run on Android Key Lime Pie. The latter rumor seems unlikely, given the high chance that 4.3 will be a Jelly Bean release, but we suppose anything can happen between now and late summer / early fall (the T6’s supposed launch timeframe). That said, all of the above rumors are making us very excited — and hopeful — for what HTC is cooking up, provided it still fits comfortably in our hands.

Is Sprint going to carry a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 equipped Optimus G Pro

LG’s flagship Optimus G Pro, due to launch on AT&T on May 10th, might just make its way to Sprint later this year — and possibly with an upgraded processor. A User Agent Profile on Sprint’s website reveals a 1080p, Android 4.2.2 handset called the LS980, which lines up with AT&T’s model number (E980) and also corroborates an earlier listing at the Bluetooth SIG. Curiously, the UAP mentions Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 800 (“M8974”), in contrast to the existing G Pro’s Snapdragon 600 processor. Then again, there’s only so much you can tell about future products from XML files like these. It could be an upgraded Sprint G Pro variant, but the reference to a totally new chip has us (and Android Police) thinking it could also be a full-fledged Optimus G sequel, which has already been rumored and possibly leaked. Either way, it’s nice to see evidence of a top-tier phone maker using this cutting edge Snapdragon, especially after the comedy of ZTE’s Grand Memo.

While Snapdragon 600 is already showing up on various flagship devices like the HTC One, PadFone Infinity, Galaxy S 4, Optimus G Pro and Xiaomi 2S, we’re still looking forward to the big daddy of Qualcomm’s lineup this year: the Snapdragon 800. At a media event in Beijing earlier today, Senior Product Manager Yufei Wang confirmed that his company’s next flagship SoC will enter mass production in late May, but he refused to comment on which upcoming devices will feature it. And due to the current state of the silicon (even though vendors like ZTE are already sampling it), we weren’t allowed to run any benchmark tests on the Snapdragon 800 development devices on display just yet, though we’ve been told to stay tuned in June.

What makes the 800 shine brighter than the 600 is its more powerful Krait 400 architecture, which can maintain a clock speed of up to 2.3GHz; but like before, the four cores are also clocked asynchronously for better power management. On top of that, the 800 comes with the new Adreno 330 graphics processor with 30fps 4K playback capability, while still featuring the improved Adreno 320’s FlexRender technology that can dynamically switch between direct rendering and binning rendering for optimized performance and efficiency. We’ll save the nitty-gritty for the proper launch of this 28nm chip later this year.

Qualcomm details Quick Charge 2.0 and Snapdragon Voice Activation: 75 percent faster charging, wake by speaking

Qualcomm didn’t show all its cards for this year when it unveiled the Snapdragon 600 and 800 at CES. The company is introducing a second-generation power charging technology, Quick Charge 2.0, that promises to cut mobile device charging times by as much as 75 percent versus regular power systems. Qualcomm has seen a tablet’s 7-hour top-up time reduced to under 3 hours. While 2.0 requires an optimized charger and is baked into the Snapdragon 800, it’s not exclusive to Qualcomm-based hardware — or small devices, for that matter. The updated Quick Charge is available as a stand-alone circuit, and could drive even laptops demanding up to 60W of energy. We don’t yet know the customer list, although Snapdragon 800 partners are included as a matter of course.

The telecom giant is saving one trick for itself, however. Snapdragon Voice Activation lets Snapdragon 800-based devices wake up through a specific voice command, whether or not those devices are online: think of it as a more advanced, less search-dependent parallel to Samsung’s wake-up trigger in S Voice. Both devices and software support must fall into place to make Voice Activation work, but truly hands-free mobile control could have a solid footing in the market before the year is over.

Qualcomm(R) Quick Charge 2.0: Less Time Charging, More Time Doing

You can’t go mobile if you’re stuck plugged into an outlet waiting for your smartphone or tablet to charge. Last year, over 70 devices launched with Qualcomm Quick Charge 1.0, an in-device solution that enables smartphones and tablets to charge up to 40% faster. Today we’re introducing the next generation, Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0, a solution that resides in both the device (offered as a standalone IC solution or as part of the PMIC power management integrated circuit of Snapdragon[TM] 800 processors) and in the AC/DC wall charger. It’s even faster and more flexible than Quick Charge 1.0, and will be inside smartphones and tablets powered by Snapdragon 800 processors.

Products with Quick Charge 2.0 can charge up to 75% faster than products without Quick Charge technology. In our labs we found tablets that normally take over 7 hours to charge were able to reach full charge in less than 3 hours with the Quick Charge 2.0 solution.

Quick Charge 2.0 devices are designed to play nice with Quick Charge 1.0 chargers and vice versa; they’re all backwards and forwards compatible. You can use a Quick Charge 2.0 charger with a Quick Charge 1.0 device, since by default the 2.0 charger safely provides only the voltage/power allowed by the 1.0 device. And although 2.0 devices will ship with 2.0 chargers, these devices can be charged safely by 1.0 chargers as well but at ‘1.0 speed’. However to get the fastest, most optimal charge, simply use a 2.0 charger with a 2.0 device. Then and only then, will the 2.0 charger provide the higher voltage at the request of the 2.0 device.

Quick Charge 2.0 will soon be built into standard micro-USB AC/DC wall chargers, so these chargers won’t look or operate differently and will be widely available. In fact, Qualcomm is already working with leading AC/DC chipset suppliers and their AC/DC power supply partners to fully enable the power supply ecosystem.

You’ll soon be able to charge even more types of devices faster. While Quick Charge 1.0 technology, with about 10 watts of power, was designed primarily for smartphones and tablets, Quick Charge 2.0 delivers up to 60 watts, not only improving charge times for smartphones and tablets, but adding support for larger mobile computing devices like slim notebooks.

We anticipate that devices and wall chargers with Quick Charge 2.0 will be available for purchase by early 2014; all smartphones and tablets with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor will have Quick Charge 2.0. Snapdragon 800 processors are an entire system-on-a-chip and feature a CPU, GPU, DSP, LTE Modem and much more, enabling UltraHD video, high-end 3D gaming, 7.1 surround sound, and up to 55 Megapixel image captures, so being able to quick charge means less time charging and more time doing!

The Snapdragon processor is designed to consume very little power, so once your device is quick charged, you won’t have to worry about charging for a while. Today, we’re pleased to introduce Snapdragon Voice Activation, the world’s first integrated always-on, low-power listening feature. Snapdragon Voice Activation, a new addition to the Qualcomm Fluence[TM] PRO suite of integrated audio solutions, enables devices powered by Snapdragon 800 processors to be “woken up” by a custom voice command (beginning with a custom phrase set by the device OEM like “Hey Snapdragon”, for example) and respond without even a single key press. After recognizing a custom word or phrase, Voice Activation wakes the Snapdragon-based device, even if it had been in standby or airplane mode, and connects to the OEM’s/HLOS voice natural user interface.

Snapdragon Voice Activation is designed to be a low-power and secure solution. It enables devices to use the least amount of power possible to listen only for the custom word set by the OEM and spoken by only the voice of the device owner, enabling both a secure and power efficient solution for users.

All of this is made possible through the advanced, tightly integrated hardware and software in Snapdragon 800 processors. And with over 55 Snapdragon 800-powered devices already in development, smartphones and tablets everywhere will be waking up to their owners’ command when they are available in the second half of 2013. We’ve long promoted the idea of mobile devices evolving into a digital sixth sense, and today, more than ever, we are seeing these big ideas become reality.
