Editorial: Tech is a flock of starlings

DNP Editorial Tech is a flock of starlings

You’ve seen the videos — thousands of starlings flocking in the sky to swirl and surge across wide, cloudless backdrops. The beauty of their coordinated motion is stunning. The phenomenon is expressively called murmuration.

There might be purpose to starling choreographies, but if so, it is movement without destination. The flock shapes and re-shapes itself continuously. Doing so makes preying on the flock difficult, but beyond that, the motivation of these group flights is ineffable. If ornithologists told us that starlings were imitating the group behavior endemic to tech-adoption culture, it would be easy to see the similarity. The science behind murmuration extends the analogy even further.

Pinterest Rolling Out New Look For All Users

Pinterest Rolling Out New Look For All Users

Starting today Pinterest is going to roll out its new look for all users. Back in January Pinterest had offered a select group of pinners to test out the new look they were developing. Now the new Pinterest look is going to be rolled out to all users and they should expect to receive an invitation soon. There are new discovery features aimed at making it easier for users to discover things that they love but don’t know about, apart from a handful of other changes. (more…)

Pinterest will be rolling out a newly revamped design to all of its users starting today. The new design was well received by a small sample group that had tested it back in January. The new design will help improve user experience by making things more “simpler and cleaner”. Now users will be able to browse through pins, plan their fantasy weddings, design their fantasy homes, and crave their fantasy meals much more quickly and easily.

One of the changes include increasing the size of pins. This will help users see “more of what you love”. Pinterest has also made it so that when you’re browsing through pins, and find yourself buried deep into your search, you can hit the “back” button on your browser and it will land you all the way back to where you were before you started browsing. Sometimes you get lost in what your doing, and Pinterest understands.

Another major change is the amount of information you see when you click on a pin. Not only will you see a larger, more close-up shot of a pin, you will also see pins on the same board as the original image, as well as more pins from the website the original pin came from. You will also be able to see what other pins the user has pinned on their boards, a feature that will make its way to mobile devices soon. This will allow you to spend more times discovering the things you like.

Overall, the user experience for Pinterest will see a great, new change after this. The site has also stated that they have “rebuilt their foundation”, so Pinterest should be much more stable and reliable. Pinterest encourages users who have any feedback to leave a message on their blog post. You should be updated to the new design shortly, and once you do, you can resume craving that ridiculously delicious-looking cupcake while that motivational workout pin makes you feel guilty.

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey wants to run for NYC mayor

Twitter was launched in 2006 by a group of guys, one of which is Jack Dorsey, who is currently executive chairman of the social network, as well as the CEO of Square, a new mobile payment company that launched in 2010. However, Dorsey’s next adventure is to one day become the mayor of New York City, a city with over 9 million residents.

In an interview that aired last night during 60 Minutes on CBS, Dorsey says that he’s “serious” about running for mayor of New York City. While he didn’t say when he would be running for mayor, Dorsey says that he wants to move to the city some day and try to gain access to the mayor’s seat. He says that he feels safe in New York City, and compares it to being in a car during a thunderstorm, where there’s chaos going on outside, but you feel safe inside the car.

Of course, it helps if you’re rich if you want to run for mayor in the most-populous city in the US, and Dorsey ranked 392nd in a list of the 400 wealthiest Americans — a list that requires $1.2 billion in net worth in order to make it. Current NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg ranks 10th with a net worth of $25 billion.

Again, Dorsey didn’t talk much about his intentions to run for mayor of NYC, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be running for the seat anytime soon, especially not after Mayor Bloomberg’s exit that will happen on January 1, 2014. Dorsey currently lives in San Francisco, California and is originally from Illinois.

Twitter to launch standalone music app

Twitter is apparently looking to bring some music into its service. The company is getting ready to use We Are Hunted, a music discovery service it had acquired 6 months ago, to help build itself a standalone music app. The app will give personalized music recommendations to users based on the musical artists the user follows, and the musical artists the user’s followers follow. The service, while less personalized, will still be usable for those without a Twitter account.

The app will stream music via SoundCloud. It will feature 4 tabs. The “Suggested” tab recommends you songs based on the musical artists you follow. The “#NowPlaying” tab lists links to songs tweeted by your followers who tweet using the #NowPlaying hashtag. The “Popular” tab lists the songs that are currently trending on the music app, and the “Emerging” tab lists a bunch of up-and-coming artists featured on We Are Hunted.

The app will display artists and songs in a grid design. Clicking on an artist’s panel will cause it to expand displaying a short bio on the artist, as well as links to songs the artist has on SoundCloud, or on iTunes. Users can tap the play button to begin streaming music from the artist. Users will also be able to follow artists directly from Twitter’s “Twitter Music” page.

iOS users are said to have first dibs on the Twitter Music service, just like Twitter’s video sharing app, Vine. The Twitter Music service is speculated to be released to iOS devices by the end of this month. Twitter hopes that by integrating music into its network, it can attract more new users to its service. It will, however, have a hard time prying users away from popular music services like Pandora and Spotify.

Facebook introduces cleaner look to Timeline

Facebook may have finally ignored the Timeline at the company’s most recent press event when they unveiled the new News Feed that’ll be coming shortly, but that doesn’t mean they’re not making changes. Facebook has introduced a cleaner look to Timeline, and they’ll be slowly rolling out the new design over the coming weeks.

One of the biggest differences you’ll notice right away are the elimination of the “Friends,” “Photos,” and “Likes” thumbnails, which are now compressed into simple text links toward the top. The “About” section also looks different this time around, as it now sits vertically on the left side of the Timeline.

Overall, though, your various Likes are organized much more neatly, and you can manage your favorite movies, books, TV shows, etc. in a more orderly fashion, including the ability to not only add your favorites, but also add movies and books that you want to read. These are separated from your favorites using tabs.

Apps also are more integrated into your Timeline, meaning that certain apps can have dedicated sections. For instance, if you use Instagram a lot, you can dedicate a section of your Timeline to strictly Instagram photos that you’ve taken. And now, all of your likes on the left side of your Timeline, with all recent activity being posted on the right side, allowing for easier browsing and scanning.

‘Breaking the Fourth Wall’ From Shakespeare To The Office To Leigh Singer [Video]

Breaking the 'Fourth Wall' From Shakespeare To The Office To Leigh SingerThe "Fourth Wall’ is a theatrical term for the imaginary wall that
exists between actors and their audiences. Originating from Ancient
Greek theater, while the open-box arena of a theater stage makes up
three walls, theater-goers are seen as the fourth wall. "Breaking the
fourth wall" is considered a technique of metafiction, as it penetrates the boundaries normally set up by works of fiction by reaching out to the audience.
